You got go love the walk back

Guentzel was the top trade target

Didn’t get a quaranteed 1st or any of the top prospects

A complete failure yet now Pens fans are turning this into did well

The so called Crosby window means 10 dark years

Hmmm interesting prospect return, figured there was no way we didn't include Morrow but all 3 are pretty decent and two of them could step into the NHL immediately if Koivunen wasn't on loan.

Pono is especially ready and the biggest reason he isn't in the show now is that we already have an older version of him in Drury and he doesn't have to clear waivers.

Dubas stated he didn't want picks and wanted prospects and players closer to being ready. He did just that. If we're cool with it as fans, why the f*** do you care as a non fan?

I have a strong feeling that is the sediment because he has every intention of signing with the Penguins again.
I think it was his camp's way of saying move me but I won't say move me so fans hate me. I wouldn't be entirely shocked if he signed and extension with his new team, during the season.

It's a 2nd unless the Canes make the finals.
Apparently the ability to trade up or down in the draft is also lost on blokes here. Using that 2nd and another pick to move up is entirely doable if another team would rather trade down for a player they want but don't want to take as high.

I feel like Pens fans might overvalue their assets just a little bit.
Every single hockey writer and analyst had already stated the most coveted player at this deadline was Guentzel. We didn't say that shit. Most rentals don't get a return like that, Dubas did quite well for a player that didn't want to sign in season and wanted to wait during the summer and possibly test the market anyway.

I don't think he was the top target, or even close.

Countdown until dubas: "its like getting two seconds" comment in reference to the prospects.

Thanks. The more I look at those prospects the less I hate the trade. I hope it works out. Pono could very well be our 3C next season, and Cruz has been playing well in the NCAA.

Still bummed out we didn’t get a more highly touted guy, but prospects of any kind are never guaranteed to work out

Dubas was prioritizing prospects over picks. The return is still underwhelming though…
Agreed, but he did basically restock their prospect depth in one felled swoop. As a fan of a team that cheaped out on prospects for a very long time, I've really noticed that having better depth prospects, helps the good prospects develop.

Mostly because of the Antagonist and somewhat abusive position some of your fans took when projecting out the return. Telling other teams that they would be collecting or harvesting untold jewels from each teams system to the likes of which we have never seen. That aggressive positioning lead a number of people to then hope for this underwealming return to then use the receipts to say told you so… but that is only my speculation. This is close to what I thought it would cost Canucks based on our asset pool and i was told it would cost our best prospect and a player that is going, has almost 20 goals and is on a great deal and our first. So, I guess for me, it seems about right.

Go back to the previous threads on this, didn’t say shit… you must have missed the entire build up to this.

That would certainly go against Dubas’ draft history, he has a reputation for trading down. No judgement on the strategy, just saying.

Live look at Pittsburgh

But honestly this trade seems pretty fair.

The Canes were really high on those prospects.

I’m starting to like it more as a Pens fan after my original disappointment.

If we were gonna sign JG we would have done it. He obviously didn’t want to, or they weren’t close on dollars. So we really only lost like 20 games of JG

If Pono can be our 3C, along with Bunting and maybe that turns into a 1st… not a bad haul

Now of course if those prospects don’t pan out we got screwed

I am a Ranger fan. I have a bunch of Pens fan friends.

The thing I have noticed about us all is that Pens fans are optimistic. Hell, why wouldn’t they be? They’ve been blessed with the best players in the game and winning Cups left and right for 40 years.

This is an underwhelming return for the top rental target this year but Pens fans are happy. They’re always happy. They were happy when they got Karlsson last year even though that was a pretty obvious step in the wrong direction.

Let them be happy.

If anyone can ever point me to a trade historically where quantity over quality won out, maybe that can make me feel better, because right now it feels like Dubas f***ing blew it
Jordan Staal for 1st, Sutter, Dumoulin? Staal was never the player he was in Pittsburgh. Dumoulin was a key player in Pens cups, Sutter was serviceable, and was traded for Bonino.

Sure. He didn't do it for the Pens first draft though. So while he did it with Toronto, you can't assume that's his go to move each time when he didn't do it for Yager.

We're optimistic? Lol. Karlsson wasn't a bad move and the trade is fine. The issue is hoping a dipshit coach will somehow magically figure out some shit he hasn't figured out in 7 seasons and we have more to endure.

We're pissed about that.

Pens also had two firsts that draft and took Maatta and Pouliot. Olli won 2 cups as a Pens defenseman as did Dumoulin. Dumping Sutter also helped the Pens get Bones to form the infamous HBK line during the back 2 backs. Canes pick was Pouliot, Pens own was Maatta. As you've mentioned already, that trade might have spelled the doom for the Pens but it didn't. What did was not moving on from bad coaches - Bylsma and Johnston. So to double down on Sullivan who has been atrocious the last 7 seasons, it's like they didn't learn from their own history.

Trading Staal helped the Pens win 2 more cups just from the pieces that put some big pieces into place.
