Probably played too hardball and everyone just moved on to other trades. Dubas probably thought everyone would wait until tomorrow and he would have more time but this year everyone made their moves early and he was left holding the bag.

For a penguins team needing high draft picks to rebuild, not even a first. Wow. At that point I would have just kept him. Not really sure what they accomplished with this other than pissing off the whole team.
High draft picks now do nothing for the timeline of the rebuild. Talk to me in 4-5 years for them high draft picks.

Canucks will just sign him in the offseason.

Honest question, why on earth would Dubas not give Carolina a window to negotiate an extension?

Like you had a time machine and could predict that Karlsson would start to suck ass and that he would help tank the power play to the worst in the league? If Mike Sullivan is removed Karlsson might come alive again!

And again, Dubas job was to try and compete this year and next season with Karlsson, not suck ass with the other players mentioned, that would have happened!

Did it work out well? No, but at the time it was well worth the gamble!
You're missing the point. It doesn't matter if Karlsson was great this year. The penguins missed the playoffs last year. They were an aging team that hasn't won a playoff round in five years. They were never one piece away (even if that piece just won the Norris). They have a bottom five prospect pool and just traded away their only good forward under 30. Losing a 1st and tying up cap space can set a team back years. It was a gamble for sure, but a dumb one. Like doubling down on a hard 20 (Maybe it works out and you like look a genius but 90% chance it doesn't).

It's not a personal shot or anything. GMs do it all the time and it's unfortunate. Honestly they're probably just trying to save their jobs but they end up costing the team and it's the fans that have to suffer. I've been through it. I'd shake my head when Holland would trade away picks and prospects at the deadline for crap like David Legwand, Kyle Quincey, Erik Cole, Zidlicky. Just praying that he could get one more run with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. But the team was never truly a contender and the acquisitions weren't enough. They'd get bounced in the first round. And the end result is once Z and Datsyuk retired we were left with no prospect pool and some bad contracts and now we haven't made the playoffs in 7 years. It's a cautionary tale.

No it would be something like Mikheyev, Raty, Podkolzin, the dman Pettersson, conditional 1st, conditional 5th. Maybe Hoglander instead of Mikheyev since Bunting is so much better than Mikheyev.
Is the last line sarcastic or honest?

Dubas is obsessed with 2nd round picks. He loved trading out of the 1st round for 2nd round picks in Toronto and has 3 x 2nd rounders here (2 prospects and the pick).

I'm guessing those guys were on his radar when at the Leafs.

The Pen’s got three solid prospects, and a decent pick for a RENTAL, they did well. None of these players hurt to lose now as a Canes fan, but we have a bunch of prospects, and its much more likely that at least one of these players have a decent NHL career for the Pens, than JG leads the Hurricanes to a cup this season. So I’m not really jumping for joy.

Fans expecting blue chip prospects were just setting themselves up for disappointment. If you take a step back, and look at these types of deadline deals for rentals objectively, Dubas did well.

The FO in Raleigh probably felt some pressure to push the chips in at least once from the media and part of the fan base, since there is going to be a lot of roster turn over here next year…

Now it makes sense why Carolina stepped up to the plate and made a big trade, they didnt have dip into their top end prospects or give up a first.
Their prospect pool was very deep. To get three solid prospects and still have a great pool is more a testament to how well Carolina has drafted. Most of us Pens fans are quite good with the deal.

Sullivan remaining the coach, not so much. Also most of us don't care for Bunts. But he's a typical Crosby type of winger and Dubas is gonna Dubas with some of his faves.

Pens got three lads that are closer to NHL ready vs the others that aren't yet but are also great prospects. I don't think either team did poorly. I hoped Ty Smith would be included and figured Wads would be interested given the Canes free agency situation. I also think literally any coach that isn't a pure asshole like Sullivan would actually use him and see him thrive. So I hope Smith turns into a 50-60pt bloke for Brindy and his band of Jerks. Jake? I would laugh if he did extend a week from now as a f*** you to Sullivan.

Maybe the prospects will pan out, but Dubas not getting a first is just not excusable.
Deadline isn't done yet and at worst that pick is a second. So now we get to cheer for the Canes to go to the finals and lose and hope the Flyers lose and push that 2nd higher just in case.

He added 3 much needed young players and some picks for a bloke that probably was going to leave and it goes to show that the other teams involved weren't willing to give up prospects close to what Canes had in their insanely deep pool.

Dubas did well.

From everyhing I read, I feel the read on this deal fully depends on how you perceive Bunting s value. If you think he is a legit top 6 on a reasonable contract worth a 1st on his own, maybe it is a good deal. If you think he has no value (and to me he was not a good fit in CAR which has considerably lowered his value), then CAR paid 3 2nds and a 4th for the best winger on market, that s not really great for the Pens.

Now for me it signals Pens don t want to rebuild, they want to inject youth in the lineup for next year trying to help the older core which is something I respect
