Thank you. Wow. Major ****-up by Lou to not have that bonus date pre-buyout date.
If to be paid before July 1st, that bonus would have been part of his 2018-19 total salary.

Cap-wise, that would not have been a problem for the Leafs as they finished $3.8M+ under the cap.

However, his total salary per season would have been $8.5M, $9M and $1.25M.

That would be impossible under the year-to-year variations rule of the CBA.

His 2019-2020 salary would, for example, need to be $4M, with the first 2 years at $9.5M and $8M.

Other combinations are possible.

Does anyone know the exact details of the 1st rd pick going Carolina's way from Toronto. It is top 10 protected. However:

1. Does this mean if Carolina wins the lottery and move into the top 10. Leafs retain pick

Or

2. If Leafs finish 11th last in the final standings, Canes retain the pick regardless if they win the lottery or not.

1) Wrong thread. This isn't a TOR trade thread.
2) Bad Question. Toronto isn't going to miss the playoffs...

You are right this isn't a Toronto trade thread. This is a Patrick Marleau thread which involves his buyout that resulted in the trade for him. And the trade involves the conditional 1st rd pick from the Leafs in the 2020 which is top 10 protected.

But it doesn't explain the conditions specifically. As for the Leafs missing the playoffs or not, this is not a thread about them making it or not. But given they are 15th OA currently having played more games than a vast majority of teams. The question posed is a good one. Since one of these scenarios below may happen.

1. Does this mean if Carolina wins the lottery and move into the top 10. Leafs retain pick
2. If Leafs finish 11th last in the final standings, Canes retain the pick regardless if they win the lottery or not.

it’s a top 10 pick protected. Not 19th in league standings protected.

The lottery happens and then if the leafs pick was in the top 10. Then it stays with them.

just like EVERY protected pick.

So if the Leafs finish 22nd, which would be the 10th pick, but a team behind them win the lottery which drops them down to #11. Canes get the pick.

the draft lottery happens. Then if the leafs get top 10 it goes to carolina. Once the final order is decided

The upcoming draft is reported to be very deep. I don't think the Canes expect to be in this position. It is still early, and there is a lot of ice to cover this season. But it is something you want clarified if top 10 protection comes into play later in the season.

Yes, the pick has protection for top 10. If the Canes get the pick, it will be from 11-31. If the Leafs draft this year, the Canes will have an unprotected pick from the Leafs in 2021.

I don't know the details, but I always assumed the 1st option.

I really wish Lamoriello(NYI) jumped all over this(getting a first). We have the caps space might as well put it to good use.

The pick may be a lot better than 1st thought. I mean one year of Marleau at 6.25 is palatable. A first back especially in the 11-15 range potentially is a huge incentive and a high price to pay. Surprised Dubas gave that up. Canes add to their riches. Nice job.
