Interesting question. Do canes fans want the first rd pick to be converted this year in what is looking like the 11-15 range or do they roll the dice and take a chance with an unprotected pick? There are no guarantees the leafs will be better next season with only 1 d man signed with little cap to work with.

This Canes fans would be giddy with a pick in the 11-20 range in the year’s draft as a result of the Marleau trade.

Flyers had the same situation from the Schenn trade.

Got lucky that St.L had an unexpected bad year and the pick was #14 Farabee. The following year, St.Louis wins the cup.

Be happy if you get a top 20 pick for Marleau because it's better than it was ever expected to be. Just like the Flyers getting Farabee at #14.

As a Canes fan I say this year. That range (11-15) will have Zary, Gunler, Mercer, or Holloway. Any of those could be a 2nd line forward in 3 years.

Lapierre is likely there as well but the concussions make him more of a gamble.

I'm not sure if this is off topic but would 'canes fans be interested in a deal that flips the conditional pick back to Toronto in exchange for Nylander?

Canes don't have the dice to roll: If the Leaf pick is between 11- 31 they get the pick. There is no choice in the matter.

You’re missing the point. He’s asking what we prefer, not saying the Canes have a choice. The terms are already defined, so the question is, do we prefer a scenario where we get a mid round pick this year, or an unprotected next year. We know the Canes don’t have a say, it’s a question of preference.

I think the Canes are going to win either way. But I am not sure if the pick reverted to an unprotected one next year, with the Leafs in cap hell, that they will be any better than this season. They have only one D man signed, and no cap space to address their Defence next year. Barring wholesale roster sell offs of one of their big 4 cap hits. But I do understand Canes fans happy with how it is shaping up this year given how the trade is panning out to be a potential 11-15 pick.
