Fair market value is relevant when you want to retain talent at certain positions. It evidently isn’t when an owner has determined that broadcasters are not worth paying for. That’s not a market inefficiency, it’s merely a preference by the ultimate decision maker. More power to him.

I think Dundon’s view is that paying a premium for a broadcaster is the market inefficiency. That the difference between announcers is negligible and has no measurable benefit to the organization, so paying anything more than replacement-level money for them is a waste.

It’s a controversial take, but consistent with how he does pretty much everything else. The one thing he will write a blank check for is hockey talent, especially young talent.

I’d argue that he was subjected to horrible management that chose to rush him.

Sure but like it was mentioned the agent sort of forced their hands to stay in Montreal. And there again his surroundings decided to he should leave Montreal after he was benched and so signed the offer sheet. Two potentially damaging moves. And maybe one day he's gonna hit a wall by their faults.

I’m skeptical about the agent’s leverage as having forced management’s hand given that we’ve seen them rush other prospects to fill immediate needs.

If that was the case he would have signed Aho for the full 8 years. That negotiation was clearly not blank check style.

Why would it be? He was trying to lock in a franchise-level RFA at the lowest number possible in order to set the cap structure for the next decade. Even with the offer sheet, his approach got the deal done at a nice number. Handing Aho some crazy contract would have been a franchise altering disaster.

Dundon has, in consecutive years, paid Patrick Marleau millions not to play for the Canes in order to take Toronto’s 1st, and paid Kotkaniemi millions above his market value simply because he had the cap space to do it. That’s what I mean by writing checks for young talent. That’s different than trying to hang on to overpaid veterans or build through UFA, which he is completely opposed to doing.

If by blank check you mean short term 5-6mm dollar deals to roll the dice on a prospect or pick, then we definitely have a difference of opinion on what blank check means.

Will be interesting to see how he handles the next Aho negotiation. Aho at 27 will not be an overpaid vet, he will be in his prime right when the team is contending. I think this will give fans a clear picture of how willing he is to make longer term financial commitments to his top players.

lol this thread is still going on?
In her Canadian wisdom, Celine Dion once sang the anthem of Habs fans
“Near, far, wherever, KK, you are
I believe that the rage does go on
Once more, KK, you open the door
And you're here in my rage
And my rage will go on and on

Didn't Svechnikov's 8-year contract answer that question a month ago?

It seems like you're trying to drum up a controversy where one doesn't exist. Dundon looks for opportunities to either lock in a key asset at an efficient cap hit, or make high-dollar short term commitments to inject talent into the system from outside. If a truly unique asset is on the table, he will pay for it. If that asset can be replaced more efficiently than retained, he will pass. This has been the pattern the entire time he's owned the team, both on and off the ice, and is consistent with the business philosophy that predates his NHL ownership.

Not trying to drum up controversy, I am having a discussion on asset management. I don’t really have a strong opinion on Dundon, I do find him interesting. League is better with guys like this running teams.

If his business asset management strategy is as you’ve described then I don’t see how he retains Aho in 3 years. Like I said, that negotiation - not the KK, Marleau or Svech deals - will tell us a lot. Will he be willing to pay market rates for top home grown talent in their prime. Time will tell.

I think Dvorak has a better season but KK gets the better of the following years.

I think if KK has a down year (or even a typical year, really) and then signs somewhere else outside of Carolina for the money he is worth, this topic will be dead.

Not sure why people think this topic should fade away. The OS and how it played out what interesting but what comes next is the real fun part. Lots of moving parts and I’m going to continue to want to talk about it as the year goes on.
