So there’s 17 minutes of that Stank. I’ve watched a bit before but don’t consider myself knowledgeable about the guy. I like the energy level and the base level of skill. He should fit in well inside our system, there’s a lot of plays where he makes the RBA choice and dumps the puck and then chases it down. He’s very good with the puck and never stops moving.

I don’t see a first line guy from that video but obviously it’s a tiny sample and he’s young enough to grow. His shot isn’t very strong but his passing is. The size is an issue for how good he can be to me. I could see him being the Jarvis on the Staal line and I could see him on whatever the second line could be. I’m not sure he’s immediately a top six guy for us other than by default since we have downgraded to only three of those. I see a lot of Blake’s engine and happy feet with a mix of Jarvis and his poise/puck protection in a smaller package. I’d give him the vague-ish “middle six” tag.

I’m a bit cautious on Stankoven, because his points have come in very tight clusters with long unproductive stretches in between. I’m not doom and gloom on him, but realistically this is a guy who’s got a coin flip chance of being a big contributor or being a bit of a liability.

That said, I look at what Rod has done with Jarvis and Blake, and it makes me a lot more optimistic. They’re such similar players that the comparison is unavoidable. Stankoven is even smaller than those guys, but there’s good reason to believe he can follow that model and become a useful top-6 winger in the long run.

Hopefully he will join Blake and RBA in the workout room.

Blake is quite a surprise and makes a difference every game but at this point in his career he can’t finish. Just not strong enough with his shot.

Optimistically though, a few more years of muscle and Blake could be a 30 goal scorer.

Btw: I wonder if all 3 of nadeau Blake and stank will remain on the roster long term. One may be used for a trade.

Here’s two I have seen (not rated as a good skater…don’t like that):

Maybe great on edges but not straight line speed?

I mean, by that chart he’s league average in skating speed which I wouldn’t say means he’s not a good skater but maybe top end speed? I don’t know exactly what data these charts take into account. He’s 100th percentile in rush offense, and you can’t do that if your skating sucks. Also 84th percentile in zone entries is very good. Necas was great at zone entries at least by the eye test. I haven’t looked at his fancy chart. All that to say, Necas is one of the best skaters in the NHL.

I wrote this about Stankoven on the main board a couple of weeks ago, so not influenced by any thought of him being a Cane:

I’m not pretending to have a ton of insight on this guy, but just looking at the numbers from last year and this year:
2023-24
8 points in 6 games to start his season
After that, 6 points in 18 gams
Playoffs, 8 points in 19 games

2024-25
14 points in 15 games to start the season
After that, 11 points in 39 games

Obviously every player has hot and cold streaks so it’s easy for the numbers to lie. In this case, outside of a couple of brief hot runs he’s played at a 27-point place for the other 3/4ths of his career. Even if he’s very good during those brief hot streaks, the great majority of the time he hasn’t looked too great.

He turns 22 this week. Scoring for forwards peaks around age 24-26, so as a smaller guy he has a year or two left to mature and develop some consistency. If that happens, he could be a top-6 contributor. If not, as a small winger he might struggle to find quality opportunities in the NHL. “Small winger who scores 1/2 PPG” is basically just roster filler.

It really comes down to how he matures in the next 24 months or so.

Edit: looks like his ice time has been deeply cut, and he was a healthy scratch yesterday? If he’s losing the confidence of his coach then the road ahead could be tough for him.

Now, as I said earlier, Rod has done very well with similar players in Jarvis and Blake, so I’m a little more optimistic about Stankoven’s chances of blossoming here than if he had stayed in Dallas. But I do think there’s very reasonable cause for caution about his outlook. He is the definition of streaky and was in the doghouse when traded.

And that’s the reality of the situation we were in. We were downgrading no matter what, it was a matter of choosing guys we had on a list somewhere. They weren’t going to give us their best young guy. They gave us the guy who was the most expendable but had some value still. Knies if Toronto. I’m curious what Florida would’ve been.

He still has good value to us. His speed, forechecking, base skill level are all pluses and improvements on some other guys floating in our middle six guy. He can fit in on different lines based on what the offense becomes. We’re maybe hoping to have a legion of pesky, tenacious, smaller forwards (yippy ankle biters being the technical grouping) that chase you down and bury chances on occasion when you look at Blake, Stank….really Aho and Jarvis too.

My guess is Lundell, but without the pick package.

Of course I want this to work out for the Canes and in a perfect world be a replacement in kind. But just as big a part of me absolutely CRAVES Stankhoven to absolutely crush for for A- to prove the critics of this move wrong and B- who doesn’t love cheering for the underdog. I wanna see this dude light it up in spite of his small stature. I love his fire and swag. That’s what we need. A goal scorer with swag. Why can’t he be a Johnny Gudreau or even to a lesser degree a Connor Garland. Let’s go Stank!!!

Edit: I’m glad the Cancer is gone and that silly drama is over. That dude quit on his teammates and this organization without even giving it a chance. He could have shown some fortitude and even with the circumstances shown some integrity but he did not. That’s a cardinal to me. You NEVER quit on your teammates. We 100 don’t want a player like that anyway. I don’t care how big he is or how many pts he could put up.
