Confirmed Trade: [CAR/COL/CHI] Mikko Rantanen (50%), Taylor Hall, Nils Juntorp to CAR; Martin Necas, Jack Drury, '25 2nd, '26 4th to COL; '25 3rd to CHI for retention

Paying Rantanen that wouldn't kill your depth. The cap is about to explode for several years in a row. Expectations are only going up. Locking up elite players is going to favor the team, even if there is some overpay
I get that but you don’t know the Avs cap situation. The Avs depth was already weak. Especially their center depth. Paying him 14 million would really hurt their cap structure. Just trust me.

I love Rants but I’ve said for years.. he ain’t getting 14 from me. Wouldn’t do it

So, basically trading 1.5 years of Necas for half a year of Hall and Rantanen at 50%? Unfortunately CAR lost a RH forward.
COL will get their W when they trade Drury to NY for Kreider… or JT Miller in a 3 way.

So what does Taylor Hall have to do with this?
Most likely

Trade 1
To Chicago: Mikko Rantanen
To Colorado: Taylor Hall

Trade 2
To Carolina: Mikko Rantanen (@50%)
To Chicago: 3rd round pick in 2025

Trade 3
To Carolina: Taylor Hall
To Colorado: Martin Necas, Jack Drury, 2nd, 4th

EDIT: Take Hall out of Trades 1 and 3 and replace him with Juntorp; put Hall straight into Trade 2.

(3-way trades don't actually exist, they have to be done in steps like this)

What’s the biggest trade to happen before this one? This trade is huge. Unreal.
An old fogey like me would say Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais for Jean Ratelle, Brad Park and a spare tire named Joe Zanussi on November 7, 1975 between Boston and the Rangers. Granted the players had some age on them but all four of the main players were well known. Plus the Bruins and Rangers were bitter enemies.

Certainly Gretzky was a bigger star but a lot of draft picks were involved besides a promising Jimmy Carson.

Going to be interesting to see if Carolina breaks it's underpaying player mindset and/or is able to sign Rantanen

Tried the same thing with Guentzel last year and lost him

Well. Never thought the last time Gabe Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon, and Mikko Rantanen would ever play together again was game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals three years ago but here we are. End of an era for the Avs, in a way. At their best they were the most dominant line in the league. Hope Rantanen keeps lighting it up in Carolina. Love that guy.

Avs have a MacKinnon salary cap and Rantanen wanted more than that. I liked Mikko, but not at 14 million per year that's for sure.
Mackinnon's deal was signed earlier and ends pretty soon. If he had to re-sign now he'd get more than 14
