Injury Report: Captain JT injury (aftermath)

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Revenge hits will only result in more young men getting their careers and lives shortened.

If I see a retaliation attack. I'm done watching for the season. Class and sportsmanship comes first.

You win through the scoreboard. Not by taking pointless, injury intentional hits.
I am taking teeth, thank you

His face trying to get up while bloody and collapsing backwards on the ice wll be always imprinted in my head now. So deflating man....and Dubas running down the steps with his eyes buldging out on his cell phone was scary as well.

Felt like my heart stopped when he got hit.
Was on such a low from that point on.
Really wish they found a way to win for JT
At the end of the day it's just a game I just hope Tavares is ok even if that means we dont see him again in the playoffs

'The game takes a back seat.' John Tavares injury overshadows Leafs' Game 1 loss to Canadiens | The Star

Tavares was expected to be in hospital overnight, with coach Sheldon Keefe remaining optimistic.

“He’s conscious and communicating well,” Keefe said after the game. “The tests that he’s had so far have come back clear.”

“I’ve experienced a lot of different things, a lot of tough injuries and stuff like that in my time as a player and as a coach,” Keefe added. “That was probably the most uncomfortable situation that I’ve been a part of on the ice. It was really tough to get through. Our players were rattled and concerned.”

...............

‘Clear accident'

Sources within the NHL’s department of player safety indicated to the Star that the contact that hurt Tavares was unavoidable — a freak accident — and even though Perry has a reputation for walking the line between clean and dirty, it was unlikely that the league would suspend him.

“Clear accident,” said one league official. “Unavoidable,” said another.

..............

Truly, it was a bang-bang play in every sense of the word, with Tavares hit twice.

Montreal defender Ben Chiarot got Tavares at the Leafs blue line and he fell backward before Perry’s knee caught him in the head. No penalty was called. Tavares lay motionless with 9:31 to go in the first period.

When first lifted, Tavares’s head lilted back. Even though only media, scouts and team officials were allowed in Scotiabank Arena, there was an audible gasp.

Doctors from both benches rushed to the Leafs captain, aided by players from both teams. It took a while for the stretcher to come, for Tavares to be loaded on. Sticks tapped as the stretcher left the ice. Perry skated by and Tavares gave that thumbs up. General manager Kyle Dubas was spotted running down to the stretcher.

I know everyone wants to be level headed and not seem like a rabid homer but as far as I'm concerned Perry hung his knee. Clear when you see it from the back angle. He sees John down and doesn't make an attempt to lift that left leg. Sure, he looked like a ghost after - like someone immediately regretting the action he just took might.

Funny its always the goons making these borderline plays that everyone jumps out to defend: Cooke on Karlsson, Tkachuck on Scheif, Perry on Tavares. These guys conceal it better than anyone. No one wants to believe they'd do it, as if humans are infalliable, especially when the stakes are high and adrenaline is pumping. Stupid, impulsive decision by Perry that I'm sure he currently hates himself for.

If you can watch the replay from our zone cam in slow motion a few times and tell me he didn't hang his knee I've got a bridge to sell you. Glad it doesn't seem like a career ending injury right now. Prayers to John and his family.
Watch it in real time. it happened in a millisecond. No way Perry could have planned that Tavares falls right in front of him with his head at knee height when he already had speed pursuing puck. Hockey accident and anyone thinking there is intent here is sick.

As a habs fan I was absolutely devastated seeing him try to get up. Players health is bigger than the game. I hope JT makes a speedy recovery and doesn’t have any long term health implications from this play. It was so hard to watch. Best wishes to JT. Hope to see him on the ice again.

Pretty much this , looking at something like that in slow motion is always going to look bad and doesn’t respect the speed of the game / or that the play that happened.

unfortunate, hoping jt is doing okay and nothing damaging long term

Agreed. Hope he makes a full recovery.

Time to prepare for next season given that the Leafs postseason was ended in the first half of the first period of the first game by the habs.

That was the scariest injury Ive ever seen happen live in all my years watching live.

From pure adrelanine in the first 10 minutes, to my heart sinking to my stomach and not even caring about the game.

God dammit man. I hope he can return to play during these playoffs. I hope he can make a full recovery. I hope it just looked worse than it actually was.

I hope this team rallies for him. Win the next 4 straight. Come on boys, do it for the Cap.

This. I've been looking forward to this series for 40 years. As soon as that happened I lost all interest in the game and possibly the series. I think it's because I have been through too many things the last 5 years that give you that instant "lesson" about how irrelevant most things are in life.

I don’t think the leafs are done. Still plenty of talent on that roster. This game IMO doesn’t even count. I know it sounds foolish, but I would have been fine if they just called it then and started the series over ffs. No one has their head in the game after that. I know that would never happen, but it just felt like it could have been done here, if ever they’d consider it.

lol.. it’s not ended. That game was definitely lost after the hit, but that’s about it

agreed, ive been saying it. Players shouldn’t have to play after witnessing something like that

Watching what happened I’d be shocked if we saw him again in the playoffs. This is such a nightmare, would rather get swept by the Habs than this. Tavares might never be the same.

No kidding man. I was barely interested after that..tough to get into the game after seeing something like that happen, so deflating. Can't imagine how the teams feeling.

Hopefully the boys can find a way to rally and Find a do-it-for-john mentality.

Anyone catch the Globe's headline this morning? "Maple Leafs captain John Tavares ends Game 1 vs. Canadiens on stretcher" - disgusting and classless to me. There is a way to reference this massive story without a flashy headline of him "ending the game on a stretcher" imo..

Obv all our thoughts and hopes are with JT and his career first and foremost - but u can't help but look up to the hockey Gods as well and just ask "really though? Our captain in Game 1? Okay.."

Woke up this morning and his injury is literally the first thing that crossed my mind. Already feel sick to my stomach ... Really hope he can come back for the playoffs and it just looks worse than what it actually was

Just hoping that JT will be able to lead a normal life off the ice.

For the Leafs it's time to start preparing for next season and seeing what we can do. The Habs ended the season and maybe even the contention window within 10 minutes of the first period. Probably back to being a bubble team without JT.

Can we stop? It's one game. Boston lost game 1 and is now up 2-1. Same with Vegas. It's not over because of one game.

Absolute shit luck and there's nothing more to it than that.

Ultimate buzzkill to the start of a playoff.

Did their opponents also brutally injure their captain like that in game 1?

I mean I hope they keep it a close series. Even without Tavares this team can be a bubble team that wins on some nights.
