Prospect Info: Caps Top Prospects General Discussion Thread Vol. 2 - 2021-22

This thread has been officially hijacked. Take it elsewhere boys. How about them prospects?

Clay Stevenson #4 in sv% and #3 in GAA in the ECHL. Would love to see him get some more Hershey time this season to get him ready for at least a 50/50 split next season in the AHL. I bet the plan was for Bjorklund and Stevenson to possibly move to the AHL next year with Fucale and Shepherd both UFAs. Unfortunately, with his back surgery I'd suspect he stays in South Carolina next season. Not sure what his timeline is though. Maybe this opens the path for Gibson to sign (assuming he doesn't hate the capitals being a probable Penguins fan hah) and get promised an AHL split. That or they give one of the vets another year to stick in Hershey and mentor Stevenson.

It’s good convo with @twabby and @Langway - I appreciate it.

That said, twabs had me peaking as a 3C as well back when I was 22. And boy did he get that one wrong (I never even learned to skate well, much less backwards!), so everyone is fallible.

You never can know with us prospects and developing players. Shit happens!!

Stock Rising

Ryan Chesley, D, Minnesota (Washington Capitals)

Ryan Chesley only had three points when he left Minnesota for the Maritimes to represent his country at the World Juniors, two of which were assists in Minnesota's season-opening series against Lindenwood (all respect due).

One could very easily be fooled into thinking that the Capitals' second-round investment last July was already going awry if they weren't paying close enough attention.

That was never really the case though. It was just as simple as Chesley joining a stacked team with five other NHL draft picks on their blue line, two juniors and two seniors among them. In reality, Chesley was playing perfectly well in a limited role, his transition skill and in-zone defence every bit as potent in college as they were with the program.

Since returning to Minnesota from the World Juniors, Chesley's taken his game to a whole new level. He picked up four points and averaged 17:16 of all-situations play through January, a marked increase on the three points and 16:42 of the three months prior. I suspect he'll take a massive step forward in his sophomore year.

That is great stuff! yeah, I think one more year of college for him (i don’t think he is AHL eligible at his age Next year). I could see him playing in Hershey after his sophmore season ends which is likely when Caps will sign him (they can’t while he is college).

Tarik's latest. Connor McMichael is doing well, Hendrix Lapierre has cooled a bit.

"Since joining the Bears, McMichael overcame a self-described “slow start” to become a trusted player who is deployed by coach Todd Nelson in all situations. In his last 10 games, the 22-year-old center has four goals and seven assists.

“I’ve been rolling lately,” he told The Athletic. “I’ve been playing with (Joe Snively) ever since he’s come down we’ve been clicking pretty well.”

In addition to centering the second line and skating on the power play, he’s been killing penalties, too. It’s a role he hasn’t filled since his days in OHL London."

The move down to Hershey was right call. Wish it could have happened earlier, but I don’t put that on coaches/GM… we needed bodies in WSH. Hope he stays there all year until NHL playoffs. Let him keep working on details, play all facets of game, gain confidence. We need him next year and for a long time.

Lapiere is unfortunate but I’m not concerned. There are a lot of ebbs and flows with young players finding their way. A lot to learn and mental consistency is the biggest one. They can only learn that on their own Despite what is (or isn’t) being given to them.

Moore & Reinbacher are I think the most underrated prospects in this class at the moment. Big fan at key positions. As far as later in the first round should they sell and add one or two more firsts I like Brindley, Ziemmer & Dragicevic. WHL forwards Cristall & Honzek seem like the biggest wild cards.

Minnesota has such a good team wow….Faber is a beast. Pitlick really stood out to me….such a deep team.

We get frustrated that Lavy doesn't play AA, but it may be more telling about AA then about Lavy. The only reason that he's still with the Caps is that he would have to pass through waivers in order to be sent to Hershey and the Caps just don't want to risk that now.

We sometimes put up the blinders for those that have been drafted in the first round. AA may be such a case having been drafted the season the Caps won the SC, so he was the last pick in the first round. It's always a crap shoot when you draft late in the first round, 7 picks after AA was drafted the Canadiens drafted his countryman another Defenseman Alexander Romanov (subsequently traded to the Isles for a 1st) and Martin Fehervary was drafted another 8 picks behind Romanov.

AA is just 23 and they say dmen take longer to develop so we'll see, but I'm not seeing him as a top 4.

My problem with this is you have to entirely base AA off not being ready by appealing to authority, IE you have to believe the coaches are the best judges of talent and ability.

Considering the deployments we've seen, and the guys they've unloaded, I just don't find that convincing. It's why he should be playing now so we actually have an idea of what he looks like in live games.

Suzdalev was a 3rd rounder, I believe. But surely he'd have moved up a bit after the year he's had. Maybe 2nd round or late 1st? Where do you think he stacks up against this draft class?

AA should be at Hershey where he would get ice time, not in D.C. where he's a healthy scratch. However, he's a victim of circumstances where he would now have to be placed on waivers in order to send him to Hershey and the Capitals are not willing to take that chance and risk losing him.

He's already spent 2 of the past 3 seasons in Hershey (with a part of the third as well, when he wasn't in the KHL). It's time to see if he has what it takes at the NHL level, not indefinitely slow cooking him in the minors. He's the same age as Fehervary. He's older than Protas and McMichael.

I say play AA and see what you got. Worst case scenario he bombs out, looks like trash for an extended period then it's easier to send him down to Hershey. He can't be any worse than Irwin or McIlrath in an extended look.

Honestly, I have no faith in Lavi to play the best players.
