Prospect Info: Caps Top Prospects General Discussion Thread Vol. 2 - 2021-22

Scott Wheeler for The Athletic analyzes the Caps prospects. He has the team ranked 25 overall.
2023 NHL prospect pool rankings: No. 25 Washington Capitals

Top 10:
1: Miroshnichenko
2: McMichael
3: LaPierre
4: Chesley
5: Protas
6: Iorio
7: Gibson
8: Stevenson
9: Persson
10: Brent Johnson

I think Protas should be above McMichael and Lapierre. He's shown he has the right mindset, he's huge and has underutilized offensive skills. He has also shown that he does the small things right at the NHL level. Can easily see him becoming a 20 g 40 a puck possession monster.

Our defensive picks have been really frustrating. Think we have something and then not. Obviously plenty of time for Iorio and Chesley to develop and become NHL players, but sad to see the ratings and expectations for them. On left side we need Alexyev and/or Johansen to break through and become NHL’ers.

The BioSteel All-American top prospects game is coming up at 4pm eastern on NHLN. Smith, Leonard, Moore & Perreault should all be first rounders out of the NTDP. Plus a bunch of USHLers like Mike Knuble's kid, Cole.

Ritchie, Gauthier & Stramel all a bit high for me. I wonder if the Caps won't invest further in RD given Carlson's game/injury between ASP, Reinbacher or Dragicevic. Also ample room going forward to fortify the center position further. Either way there's enough quality to hit on a pretty strong prospect there in the mid-first range. Danielson, Cristall or Honzek would be logical enough fits as well out of the Dub.

ASP would be a great add for the farm system. I expect them to go a position besides LHD considering our supposed depth/logjam at the position + this class outside of Gulyayev for LHD isnt really that good anyways. Would be shocked if he fell to where we pick but I wouldn't mind him.

I don't doubt he'll be available to them and they should be pretty familiar with him since he's in the Omsk system. BPA all the way but I'd venture they'll have better options unless they're picking ~20. Somewhere in the 15-18 range I think the upside plays are mainly Reinbacher or Cristall for me at this stage unless someone slides. But ample time for them to rise in the back stretch.

I was just curious about goalie prospect Garin Bjorklund. For this season I know he was assigned to the ECHL Stingrays, but he hasn't played a game. Is he on IR for the season or did he become a complete bust and is out of pro hockey?

Back surgery, out indefinitely.

The CHL Top Prospects game is on NHLN tonight at 10 eastern. Barlow, Danielson, Dragicevic, Ziemmer, Ritchie, Heidt & Gauthier could be possible first round targets.

Pretty good take on the prospects game. None of the mid-first options slayed it. Barlow should go top 10 thanks to maturity/completeness and I'd take Danielson in the mid-first but would lean elsewhere when it comes to the rest of the aforementioned mid-first group. Cristall didn't play and he's someone that should interest them as a potential boom/bust impact talent. Otherwise not sure there's a steal in that CHL group...someone that pops consistently.

How is his KHL stat line? I guess I could look it up.

Edit — or watch the entire video, and they show his stat line. Geeez, ok then

I like the KHL assignment. I've only watched 4 of those games, but he's not in over his head. He looks like he belongs. Not getting big minutes, but also not taking penalties, not getting pushed around, competing in both ends... He looks good.

He's in the right place for how he's playing right now. I wouldn't be quick to rethink it if he went through a bad patch; better to see how he responds. But at the moment I feel real good about his long term chances. He has a mature presence and poise in his game and excellent hockey sense. He makes smart, savvy plays and leverages everything -- body, speed, pace, vision, hands... He's keenly aware of his body and skills, shows a lot of control for a young guy.
