Prospect Info: Caps Top Prospects General Discussion Thread Vol. 2 - 2021-22

That Canadian PK... yikes.

Kemell and Bedard looked great. Unsurprisingly.

Canada out in the U18 quarters to Finland. Not sure Team Canada coach (and former Cap) Baumgartner will be getting any future calls after that performance. Not a great squad but they were a mess. I don't know if they'll have a single first rounder in the upcoming draft. Goyette & Pickering were fringe coming in and I can only move them down after that.

Jiri Kulich with another couple goals against the Swiss. Eight goals in four games puts him pretty squarely into the top 20 IMO.
So is the 2023 nhl draft looking subpar at this point?

Logan Cooley Michigan alert. Skilling it up against Latvia.

2023 looks to be great at the top-end and perhaps solid overall. Lots subject to change but at least the top 5-10-15 tracks to be better than average.

McGroarty with a couple against Latvia. I think he now has five. Tough player to project but somewhere in their range seems right.

Caps first two picks now set at 20/46 barring a run to the CFs (or one of the three teams out West below them making the WCF).

Iorio goal. Brandon lost Game 5 to go down in the series 3-2. Moose Jaw advanced on solid nights from Mateychuk & Firkus.

Sweden beats USA for U18 Gold. The Djurgarden line was excellent. Havelid in net was the difference.

McGroarty won me over. I still have skepticism about his fluidity/skating but very much a leader. Very productive and determined. Ohgren & Ostlund I have very slightly lower than 20 but I wouldn't blink if they're selected. Two high floor Swedes.

It was a solid tournament for Kulich, who solidly belongs in the mid-first range. I was disappointed in Snuggerud's all-around play. Good shot but ideally I'd aim for a more consistent player. Mahoney may need to think more about consistency, detail and leadership as they enter more of a transition phase so as to avoid the pitfalls of less reliable players like Burakovsky & Vrana. They should be safe from needing to make such sacrifices in order to add skill at 20.. They should be in a position to add a fairly well-rounded upside forward no matter how the draft plays out in front of them. I don't doubt that after the top 8 or so there could be some real surprises but at 20 it's a deep enough class to have their choice among at least, say, four pretty well-rounded upside forwards.

Brandon eliminated in 3OT last night ending Iorio's WHL season. Wonder if he'll travel to Hershey to at least get a sense of the place.

It sets up a pretty studded second round match-up between Winnipeg (Savoie, Geekie) & Moose Jaw (Mateychuk, Firkus) starting Friday.

I was really impressed by his hockey sense and positioning for his age. He needs to get stronger but there's a lot to like there in a center prospect.

(Upper Deck NHL Draft? That's new.) Central Scouting final rankings. Del Bel Belluz, Beck & Howard over Nazar, Firkus, Mateychuk & McGroarty. Nazar at 21 among NA skaters. Mesar at 20 among Euro skaters. I find Salomonsson fairly overrated among the Euros.

Lapierre with 1+2 last night in a win. Hanelt with two goals in a win.

Pronman's Gauthier ranking is a bit rich & Nazar seems too low (esp. for Pronman). Where Yurov & Miroshnichenko go are X factors, particularly since IINM neither will be at the combine. They'll presumably be at the draft where teams can schedule 11th hour meetings but they're wildcards.

If I had to bet my guess would be McGroarty, Firkus or Miroshnichenko with Korchinski as an outside chance for the Caps and the Swedes Ohgren & Ostlund as primary relatively safe fallbacks. Kulich probably played his way above their range at the U18s. McGroarty conceivably may have but teams may still wonder about his skating to where it's less sure. Mateychuk & Mintyukov I'd guess are gone. Same with Kaspar. But at least two of those four prime options should be available at 20. If not someone else has slid. The two Swedes for me would mainly come into play were they to covet their all-around hockey sense or be bearish on some of those other options either due to risk or medicals when it comes to IM. Those two are a conceivably safe and predictable route given org. tendencies but I have them just a bit lower. Still solid and useful player. I'd opt more for pure offensive upside but certainly the overall skill set and well-roundedness is also valuable. The main quality I'd earmark is competitiveness given that CMM/Lapierre do not have that in spades from a atrength/battle standpoint so it's something of a projected weakness (esp. as the core ages). Not that they should reach for grit but a more perimeter finesse type should be devalued. Thankfully outside of maybe Korchinski I don't think there's too much of a risk in that area.

The other consideration could be Gaucher depending on how well he finishes the Q playoffs. He could fit as a much cleaner Eller replacement middle six C...someone with more offensive upside than Protas and a far bigger frame to play the position compared to CMM/Lapierre. He's someone that could mesh well on a bigger line with Mantha down the road. Consistency is a question but the raw ability at his size as a right shot center deserves scrutiny.

Wheeler expects five D (Nemec, Jiricek, Mateychuk, Mintyukov & Korchinski) to go in the top 16,. Also some notes on Yurov/Lambert and potential fits in the top 16. Even if all five D don't go top 16 it's hard to see one sliding past LAK at 19. So then it may come down to which two of Kulich, Kaspar, Firkus, McGroarty and Miroshnichenko are available. The first two are more likely gone but who knows. I'd rank them roughly in that order with IM hinging on his medicals. If it checks out then there are some parallels to Lapierre's draft year to chew on. That seems very much in their wheelhouse if it all checks out.

I'd move up for Lambert if he was still available @ say, 18.

It would be expensive though to try and move from 32 to 18.

Kinda of liking the 3rd line center options where the caps pick. None of the dman ranked around where they are do much for me. Ohgrem also seem intriguing.

I notice Lapierre has taken all of four draws in the Q playoffs and basically hasn't taken them since returning from injury.

Firkus with a couple snipes and an assist in a loss. Rybinski with an assist (currently up 2-0).

Marco Kasper taking on the US in the WCs on NHLN shortly.

Looking for info on players who made their NHL debut last season. Can anyone here tell me a bit about these guys like what role they played last season, what type of player they are and what their future outlook could be? Thanks!!

Aliaksei Protas
