CHL Top Prospects Game on NHLN at the top of the hour. Prime options in this game for the first rounder are probably the defensemen Mintyukov, Mateychuk, Korchinski & Pickering but you never know.

Any feedback from this game? The one thing I miss going the Hulu route is no NHL TV channel.

I was most intrigued by the WHLers Mateychuk for their first pick and then Firkus for the second. They're teammates in Moose Jaw. That's probably an unlikely possibility but two toolsy smart players. The big, strong RD Warren also stood out, though he may be more of an early second rounder.

Brent Johnson just scored the opening goal against Notre Dame for North Dakota. Also on ESPNU. His production has been very low his freshman year but I know he's been bottom pair and maybe not getting a ton of opportunities. Jake Sanderson is out, so nice to see him step up here. I hope we see more out of him next year when Sanderson likely goes pro

I see that Harvard played their final game of the season. I'd guess Mitchell Gibson is eligible to be signed. He is finishing his Junior season, Caps hold his rights until August 2023. Educated opinions on whether he will? (On whether he was good enough to WANT to sign him?) I know little about him aside from raw stats.

At least there was 2018.

Evidently he has been vocal from the beginning about finishing his degree at Harvard so I doubt they’ll sign him this year. If they don’t sign him this year he’ll be a UFA after next season so there’s a real possibility they lose him. I think the signing of the Dartmouth goalie was either a hedge against losing him or they already know they won’t be able to sign him.

Completely makes sense, thanks.

Obviously the Nick Abruzzese news today was a factor in my asking.

The silver lining at this point is the top 20 in the upcoming draft is pretty decent, even if it's maybe not great at the very top-end. They'll likely be in position to choose among a few of Mateychuk, Snuggerud, Mintyukov, McGroarty, Ohgren, Kasper, Mesar, Firkus or perhaps Miroshnichenko. At least a few should be available to them. It's a pretty solid blend of skill sets, albeit no centers in that group or RD. . They'd probably need to trade up for a center if they want one (say, maybe Gauthier) or down for RD (Luneau, Warren, Chesley, though it's not advisable IMO). Then there's the possibility Yurov could slide due to the Russian Factor/geopolitics and/or that Lambert slides. Given their weakness of right shot forward prospects I might earmark Lambert, Snuggerud, Mesar, Firkus or Miroshnichenko but...BPA. The work rates of McGroarty, Ohgren & Kasper would be welcome and the two LD in Mateychuk & Mintyukov have some dynamic elements. These are not resuscitative talents that will single-handedly stabilize them but I might rate all higher than Lapierre. Not that Lapierre isn't a good prospect but his weaknesses align with the organization's a bit too much for my liking. Some good pace and creativity but kind of soft and probably not someone Laviolette would take a quick liking to. The poster child for that in this range is probably the WHLer Korchinski. A good skilled defenseman but not an engaged defender. That group of ten or so have solid middle of the lineup potential and further upside.

Having said all that they'll probably just trade it for a goaltender.

He could be in the mix, too, for sure. His ranking is a bit over the map. I find his skating holds him back some and he's more of a playmaking wing that's skilled but I wonder how it projects. I have him more in the early 20s so they should be able to do a bit better given how they're tracking. Many in that group aren't perfect. Some need to fill out a lot or become more active defensively but that's normal. That group of forwards I find offers a little more protectable impact and are better fits (in light of CMM/Lapierre being kind of perimeter themselves). That knocks down Howard & Korchinski for me. Pronman recently had Pickering in the teens but I'd find that too vanilla. After Mateychuk/Mintyukov he could be the next D that goes but those forwards I find as better fits.

Still some time for things to shuffle around at the end of the season. A strong U18s from Ohgren could boost his stock as a late riser. Right now the Caps would pick 21st but a few of the Western playoff teams are mere thousandths behind them in points percentage so 17th is quite possible. In that event I'd be looking at something like McGroarty or Kasper at worst.

Mateychuk should be a riser, I'd be all over him in the 15-20 range, even higher if I'm a team picking around 10. Maybe his size works against him for some teams, but he seems like a Ryan Ellis / Jamie Drysdale / Cale Makar ish type player. Not saying he gets to that same level of play with those guys, but teams shouldn't be shy taking a talent like that. He's really fun to watch

I've kind of written him off but he's had a pretty decent year with Minnesota St. I'm guessing there's probably still no organizational spot for him next year given that Iorio could turn pro and perhaps Has will as well. But he may be worth an AHL deal given that their org. RD depth will be again be pretty untested.

Another Iorio goal at 1:24:

He seems taller than 6'3'' watching him play. Probably more like 6'4'' now. He's a work in progress athletically and in learning how best to use his size but a lot to like assuming he continues to refine his game. He's not altogether dominant like Schneider last year but he's probably ready to go pro next year to accelerate his development. He'll be more of a simple stay-at-home type that can execute a stretch pass well and generally keep it simple but he does have some offense. He also tries to stickhandle around guys at times and it's not really a strength. He's got the confidence to try it but particularly against men he'll need to streamline and also take better angles defensively at times (which goes back to the athleticism question a bit). Good raw skill and size foundation but probably needs a couple years in Hershey bulking up and seasoning barring some big strides.

Re: the draft, Gaucher had a five assist night last night. If there's an upside center in their range it's probably him if he's highly productive down the stretch. Kasper has the work rate but I like him a bit better on the wing stylistically. Gaucher offers the size and is a right shot so a lot to like there. He's more around 20 at the earliest for me right now but he could rise depending on his finish, esp. if teams prioritize his position/size relative to some options like Firkus/Mesar.
