I don’t see them trading young players for guys who are rentals/spare parts and will likely never play, or only play if something goes wrong. Could be wrong but nothing in BMac’s history makes that seem like a plausible outcome. These aren’t the full trades obviously but it gives an idea of how prospects have been included in deals.it is interesting the prospects who have been played at NHL level this year (and who hasn’t). Pilon and Pinho have not. Older players who seem to be relegated to AHL. And very young (still waiver exempt) who have played like Lapierre, Leason, McMichael, and Protas. Then you have a couple of tweeners which I think can play at NHL level but not sure they have a spot with Caps. This includes AJF, Snively, and Malenstyn.
I say this because I think AJF is a “prospect” we would trade for some value. Same for Snively as his stock is high right now. Whereas Beck may be ready but still viewed by most clubs as AHL primary so won’t generate interest. So I don’t think we trade any of our top assets or picks unless there is someone young with term coming back. But i could see us moving Snively and/or AJF for a 13th forward or 7th/8th defenseman.
I would argue that Snively’s value to other teams is less than his value to us right now. This would be a terrible time to trade him. He’s cheap and if he gives us production, great. But he would be a small chip in a major trade if that’s what you’re thinking. It’s not like you’ll trade Snively, a 2nd rounder, and bag of peanuts for Hertl.it is interesting the prospects who have been played at NHL level this year (and who hasn’t). Pilon and Pinho have not. Hagelin makes too much. Seems like the odd man out to me.I’m just saying that I think our top prospects are UNlikely to be moved. But we have several NHL ready bottom 6 that may be attractive and we can’t keep them all. I’d love to move Hags 2.75M but i don’t think that is likely this year (maybe in the offseason - he is too important to a cup run). Beck or AJF can take that spot but we don’t have room for both. Snively is interesting (and as someone who has a kid playing for Little Caps, I am really rooting for him), but he is only valuable in the middle 6 so he may be more of a Stevenson type that has more value being moved and he may shine elsewhere. But there is value there. And i just wouldn’t trade any of the other forward prospects named CMM, Lapierre, Protas. I’d probably move any of our defensive prospects except Fever who is firmly entrenched as top 4 dee for Caps future.
Ok, so who would want Hagelin in a trade?Hagelin makes too much. Seems like the odd man out to me.
And let me be specific. He makes too much to be a fourth line player on a team tight to the cap.
He would be a throw in for cap space in a deal. The value for the other team would be something else.Ok, so who would want Hagelin in a trade?
Would probably prefer Euro forwards Mesar, Ohgren or taking a swing with Miroshnichenko. The Miro wild card may help enable them to retain strong value at their pick even as they enter the early 20's range but it does seem to thin out. They definitely should be shopping this pick for more near-term utility, if not for a marquee rental then for a useful developing middle of the lineup piece.21. Washington Capitals: Owen Pickering, D, Swift Current
The Caps have certainly loved their WHL defensemen over the years. Pickering is a 6-foot-4 blueliner with some two-way capabilities. He’s not the most productive, but there are flashes of higher-end offensive ability. Projections for him are all over the map, but he’s an intriguing prospect to be sure. The Caps don’t have much depth in their system, so they could use help everywhere.
