Prospect Info: Caps Top Prospects General Discussion Thread Vol. 2 - 2021-22

lol, that mood was prevalent not that long ago, eh?
Eh, you never know. They look to be a solid playoff team but it doesn't take much to still be a one-and-done team. Hopefully health is on their side later this season but for now I'd say their biggest issues are Carlson and goaltending. One must feel pretty good about the defense and depth up front but those are two pretty significant areas. The schedule and player usage may also become factors as the season progresses. It's a hell of a start for their top line and blueline mostly and recently depth scoring has joined the fun. Goal differential suggests they're a legit top 5 team potentially and the PIT/NYI struggles gives them early breathing room. But it's still fairly early.

Its still interesting to look at prospects in that area since obviously nothing is a guarantee (especially in the playoffs). This is a strong class and I feel like getting a good player from this class is very much necessary to helping the transition from the ovi/backstrom era to the new caps era be not as bad as say detroit was for a period there. I'd only trade a first this year if the player we got was a clear upgrade and has several years of control

Oskar Magnusson And Bogdan Trineyev Participate In Four Nations Tournament – Oskar Magnusson Scores Goal

The Four Nations Tournament for Under 20 players took place at Catena arena in Ängelholm, Sweden this past weekend. Participating nations included Sweden, Finland, Russia, and the Czech Republic.

Capitals prospects Oskar Magnusson of Sweden and Bogdan Trineyev of Russia were both selected to play for their native countries. The tournament was a round robin, with each country playing each of the other three countries.

Of note, Iorio is one of only two righties invited (Jack Thompson being the other).
Interesting. Invited 11 dee. Figure 7 or 8 will make it. Wouldn’t be surprised if they add 1 or 2 more to camp. 21 forwards invited (down to 14-15). Don’t know the max roster size but that seems about right. 4 or 5 eating popcorn and staffed for injuries.

Iorio was always going to have an uphill battle making the team this year, the only reason we got optimistic was the lack of right shots invited to Canada's camp.

Lappy not making the team is a surprise.

I’m a little concerned about Lapierre and McMichael. Protas has come in and stepped up and earned a spot. CMM and Lapierre both seem to be thinking they were owed something. Lapierre in particular needs to use this year to get stronger and find more scoring punch.

Lapierre hasn’t played particularly well since getting back to juniors. I watched a good deal of their games and he isn’t even one of the top best three players on the team at the moment.

Lapierre was nonexistent in the games against the USports all stars and they wanted to go bigger. Canada had a plan to pick players for certain roles throughout their lineup. Iorio was fine, but there we others who were better and have an extra year experience on him. The only way he was making it was because he is a right shot and Canada took 8 left shot defensemen.

Not really any new big risers coming out of nowhere. Chase Clark is off to an encouraging start to the season, but he's an 18 year old goalie in the USHL so still a very long road ahead. Joaquim Lemay having a solid year in the USHL as well.

Biggest riser is actually an old name. Lucas Johansen seems to realize his remaining opportunities are limited and is having a strong year (at least when Hershey isn't all in COVID cancellations). Made his NHL debut as a result last week. Not sure there's a spot for him in either the short or long term in Washington, but he might be able to crack some other line-up as a depth guy in the future.

I think with LuJo it’s less about getting his act together and more about finally being healthy. He’s had long term injuries for at least the last two years and maybe even three which has really hurt him.

QMJHL postpones its return to play – LHJMQ

With no clear timeline of COVID-19 restrictions being eased, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today announced the postponement of its return to play plans.

Initially scheduled for a return in the week of January 17, the regular season will now resume on February 1. The league is still working on rescheduling all postponed games, with the primary objective of having all franchises play their full 68-game schedule.
