because he stinks and it’s awful asset management, why are people celebrating a terrible deal? The goal of a team in the NHL should be to win, not sign terrible deals because the fans like the player.

The way fans talk about Wilson is actually so funny, since you can’t actually pinpoint when he does well (not a lot), they make up platitudes like says he’s a good leader or “hard to play against”, this deal is just terrible and it a perfect summation of everything wrong with bowel movements strategy. If i was a fan of a rival team i’d be laughing my ass off at the caps right now.
I think you are way off base. It’s ok to disagree.

What is Wilson good at?
-creating space for his linemates
-hurting/scaring opposing players (leads to turnovers)
-great hands
-good scorer
-better passer than is credited for
-great leader/example to follow

You think that’s nothing. I do not

Good penalty killer too. He also does what Tkachuk does as far as making teammates play a little bigger. Also, never forget what he is best at........horrifying acts of violence!

So now that Tom Wilson is signed, who do people want to see the Capitals target this offseason if anyone?

I think Nikolaj Ehlers is a high-risk but very high-reward candidate that could be available for a reasonable price. He’s signed for 2 more years so he hits the sweet spot of not being a rental but also not being an overly long commitment. The injuries are concerning and the cap hit isn’t small ($6 million). But the talent is immense and fills a very obvious stylistic need. Washington has to make a high upside play if they hope to compete, even if there is risk involved.

Mantha’s replacement. Whoever that is. I believe there is a chance Kuzy could have a good year so I feel better about rolling the dice on him. Mantha I feel the die is cast.

I don't know about personal targets but I suspect Lindholm remains the top piece under consideration due to versatility. He's maybe not ideal but would give them a goal-scoring piece and someone that can play center if need be. I doubt they have a big trade in them over the next five weeks, though, and will largely let it play out in camp and go from there. Calgary doesn't seem in any rush, in part since they still want to give it a go making the playoffs I'd wager. I'm not sure they've given up on extending him just yet either.

The Caps could perhaps offer more, both in terms of roster pieces and futures with something like Mantha & McMichael, than they'd net at the deadline but I don't think they're ready to move him yet. Maybe during training camp they reach a crossroads and it triggers a decision

Ehlers has always been at the top of my list. If Kuznetsov has somewhat of a bounce-back year then Ovi, Strome, Wilson, Ehlers, and Kuznetsov is a decent top six. They'd still have a glaring hole in the top six because I don't think Oshie should be there any more but they don't have too many other choices.

With the Karlsson trade arguably making it harder for the Caps to compete for a playoff spot it should be an even more emphatic no one.

Give the young'un a real test at their natural positions and you can make a much smarter decision next off season on who of our young'uns we should move on from and use as trade capital.

Next summer Mantha is gone, maybe Kuzy too. Also will have a better handle on Backstrom and what the future for the cap is. And who emerge as potential trade and UFA targets acrossthe league.

There is always a chance a young mix can overachieve and make it an exciting year. If we do this now the chance for Ovi signing on at reduced cost to play another two or three more years and potentially win Cups in that time frame is plausible. Also Ovi for 1000 becomes a thing!

Unless we know 100% right now Backstrom will LTIR this September hold on with...

Ovi - Strome- Wilson
Milano - CMM - Oshie
Kuzy - Protas - Backstrom
Beck - Dowd - Mantha/Phillips

Natchos - AKN/Mantha

When Patches returns...

Ovi - Strome- Wilson
Patches - CMM - Oshie
Kuzy - Protas - Backstrom
Milano - Dowd - Mantha/Phillips

Natchos - Beck/AKN/Mantha

Move Mantha and Kuzy at the deadline if they have increased their value.

This also makes it easier if, by chance, both Milo and Leonard are truly ready for 2024 - 2025.

Milo seems intent on making the Caps THIS FALL. Might be quite the story in September and early October.

Dubas traded a bunch of crap assets they wanted to get rid of for Karlsson. Master class.

Your turn BMac.
Our time has come and gone.

I’d rather try and see if a new coach can get the guys we have to play better, then, sell at deadline if necessary.

The Pens missed the playoffs by a point. We were done at the deadline.

2024 -2025 could look like:

Ovi - Strome- Wilson
Milo - CMM - Leonard
Suzy - Protas - Oshie
Milano - Dowd - Beck/Phillips

On top of that there would be lot of cap space to augment that line up.

One optimistic scenario could be CMM and Protas blossom at C. One could than move Strome and go after an elite C...

If that plays out going after an elite D to replace Carlson should be on the agenda.

I'm very high on the potential for Milo and Leonard. Maybe Suzy too. Trineyev could also be a dark horse.

I don’t disagree on our time but obviously mgmt isn’t taking that mindset. I’d rather take another swing than die by entropy.

As of today we are now the oldest team again in the NHL (post Pitt trade). Dammit lol.

I don't expect BMac to counter for some trade sake. Caps are far better going forward regarding their future. Pens are old dirt and their future is trash. The Pens are taking a very high risk with an aged roster. Defense/Goaltending/Injuries was their issue, but honestly I don't think they improved all that much.

Agreed to a degree but riding the fence seems silly and I think they have decided they want to go down fighting. I expect him to make a trade and obviously not because this trade happened…that was sarcasm. I am impressed with what Dubas could do.

Caps are in the long term investment game, while the Pens are in the quick money game. Long term investment usually prevails in the total outlook.
