Yolo Jarmo. Lezgotrades.

Not super sure if the value is right but I like Cbus aggressively fixing their weaknesses, rather than hoping it works it self out.

Same thing we did in 2014 with Niskanen and Orpik.

Severson is pretty good but this move makes little sense from Columbus’s POV. They’re at least a few years away from contention you’d think and they aren’t getting any of Severson’s prime with this deal

I get being aggressive in an attempt to improve your team looking to exit a rebuild, but the Provorov trade and Severson signing seem like desperation moves that won’t move the needle too much now and might look pretty bad in just a few years when Columbus’s young players start entering their prime. Columbus would have done well to sign some vets to shorter term deals to bridge the gap rather than going 8 years with Severson and spending a valuable first round pick on a thoroughly mediocre Provorov.

Weren’t they heavily injured last season? Maybe they’re just banking they’re not as bad as their record and it was injuries that derailed them

Columbus D was brutal last year and lacked experience. They are addressing their weaknesses rather than hoping it magically fixes itself.

And no, 21 year old rookie dmans in their “prime” was not the solution ;). (Although Jiricek looks nice)

As I said I liken these moves to the Caps offseason in 2014 when they got Niskanen and Orpik. Trotz too if you want to count that.

I guess we’ll see.

They’re addressing their weaknesses but I don’t see any long-term vision with these moves. It’s plugging leaks short-term and will further restrict their ability to improve later on IMO when their young core will need supporting depth to make them a contender.

I’m very confused by your long term point. Provorov is 26 and Severson is 28, they aren’t on their last years. Provorov only has 2 years but Severson just sign for 8 years, that is as long term as it gets.

I don’t think Severson is much more than a #3 or #4 guy and statistically speaking he’s very unlikely to do anything but go downhill from here. In 4 years when Columbus might be ready to compete he’s going to have 4 more years left on his contract and will be 33 years old and likely in decline. I think there’s a high probability that he will carry negative value and need to be considered as a cap dump candidate at that point. Or maybe in a good case scenario he’ll be a $6.25 million third pairing D.

Provorov might help them a bit now but the opportunity cost of that move is way too high. They could have just drafted a player with that pick who could be contributing in 2-4 years on an ELC which would better fit a contention window. As is they spent a first round pick on a mediocre player who likely won’t even be around in 3 years.

These are win-now moves for a team not ready to win now, and I think it’s going to hurt them in a few years when they have trouble acquiring competent depth to support their young core players who will be in their primes.

On another topic, the Flyers are in firesale mode.

I posited an offer on the trade board thread, and Flyer fans did NOT puke all over it, so could be a framework here. Let’s assume Caps do not like what is left at #8:

8,40, and Mantha to Flyers
22 and Konecny to Capitals.

Might have to add a little, but that’s the base line.

Thoughts?

For what it’s worth I think Fehervary showed a modest overall improvement this year and exited the “below replacement level” zone, but not by much. I think expecting him to become a top 4 D given his results to date is extremely risky. Evolving Hockey projects him to get 2 x $2.2 million or 3 x $2.8 million. I think there are several UFAs that could be had for cheaper and have a better impact than what Fehervary brings.

I know the edict is “young and fast” but Fehervary is still a guy I highly consider moving this offseason if he carries value around the league. With a weak free agent market, a flat cap world, and Provorov getting what he did I suspect there would be a team that would really value Fehervary and I hope Mac is open to moving him.

I’m not a Konecny fan. 30 goals is nice but his impacts across the board aren’t very good:

If Michkov is off the board I’m more than open to moving #8, but they need to aim higher than Konecny IMO.

Most players metrics on the Flyers weren’t good, so I cannot really hold it against him here.

You’d also be getting rid of Mantha salary and still have the 22 OA.

I’d be hard pressed not to do it. But what do I know.

I think there is a huge difference between 8OA and 22OA. Enough where I don’t see Konecny being close to bridging that gap. I can buy Konecny bouncing back after last year but his baseline wasn’t all that high to begin with so a bounce back season likely isn’t all that impressive. Konecny is a good example of a player who can one of a bad team’s best players but is likely a middling player on a good team. If Washington is going to trade #8 overall they need to get a player who can be one of a good team’s very best players.

Nikolaj Ehlers likely comes far cheaper than Konecny but has proven far more impactful over the years. Different positions, but similar impacts

If I’m using #8 overall as a trade chip I’m aiming way higher and packaging it with other assets if needed (another first round pick, Tom Wilson, Martin Fehervary, prospects, etc.). I’ve said it before but is Elias Pettersson available? There were rumblings from Michael Russo earlier this year that Pettersson wants out and Pettersson hasn’t exactly quieted those rumors in any way. Is Matthews going to be available? Presumably Toronto will know by the draft.

That’s the level of player I’m looking at if I’m parting with 8OA. Otherwise I think it’d be prudent to hold onto the pick or move up to guarantee Michkov.

I’m open to moving Fever for a good young piece at forward, but moving him to save 1 million Cap space and replacing him with a dumpster dive dman is brutal asset management.

No more Siegenthaler/Stephenson donations please.

I didn't mean to suggest moving him for cap purposes alone. It'd be kind of pointless to move him without a big upgrade coming the other way.

But I do think he could be a part of a very attractive package for an impact forward and I hope MacLellan is exploring that avenue rather than ruling it out completely because Fehervary is young(ish).

Need to rebuild without using the word rebuild so nobody panics. That's the job BMac has in front of him. You can jumpstart that with the #8. I don't see many scenarios where we move the #8 pick. The #22 is another prospect at the level of what we've been drafting for the last decade. Need top talent to move forward. Konecny doesn't get us far enough over the hump short term to make it worth stalling the rebuild/retool/whatever word make you feel safe at night.
