Mantha at 24. Kuznetsov an HM. With so many teams up against the cap and/or needing to restructure their mix it's going to make for a fascinating off-season trade market.

They have two #20's on the list - Mantha can't even be certain of his position on their Trade Board.

Having played in the HNA for a couple of years I didn't mind. Though I think back when I played it there were auto suspension dropping the mitts.
My league at the Gardens is 3 games for a punch. If i remember right HNA is not part of USA hockey had has their own rules for the league.

Not only have we not had a #8 in a long time, but this is a top heavy draft. The guy we get there by most accounts would be a 5 in another draft. Not a sure thing, they never are, but it will be a solid pick

Ottawa doesn’t have Alex Ovechkin tho, who is still producing like a mfer
If we were one player away I’d agree with you but we’re not. The Caps arguably only have three top six players in Ovechkin, Strome, and Wilson. Even if you count Kuznetsov there are still big gaps in the top six. Oshie and Backstrom are done as top six players. Mantha and Milano are middle six tweeners. The defense is also very young and unproven on the left side.

Unless Edmonton got drunk and traded Draisatl to Washington for 8OA, Kuznetsov, and McMichael then I don’t think they should be trading a pick. In most years you have to suck really bad to get a player of the quality they could get.

Yeah I’m still trading the pick if we can lure someone like Nylander or PLD with a contract. The flair of Washington hockey won’t even be close to what it is now without 8 flying around. Could end up like the Sabres or Canucks who just love draft time every year (don’t question my fandom lol I’m still watching all the games post Ovi era)

If Michkov is still there at 8 I draft him and pump my fist. I'd also strongly consider trading up if at all possible to draft him. The equivalency models apparently love Michkov to the point where he's being projected as a generational talent, perhaps a smidge below Bedard.

Otherwise I strongly consider trading the pick. Again don't force a trade that doesn't make sense, but also don't stubbornly hold onto it to draft some guy who likely projects to be some second line dude.

Find a way to draft this dude!

Yep, if he hadn't announced he was sticking in KHL for 3 more years, he'd be a lock for 2-3 slot without question. As it stands, there may be some wiggle room to trade up to get him, but it appears unlikely he slides to 8. It appears unlikely he slides beyond 4 to SJ.

I don't know what it would cost to move up from 8 to 3-4 but there's not a ton of price I would consider off the table. He's a 1OA in many other drafts.

I think you are spot on. To get him, we really need to be at 3 or 4.

I think the cost will be pretty steep. My guess is it costs this years first and second, and, 2024 first.

The way the caps are set up there's basically no trade they can make that's worth it. Other teams have either a ton of cap space or cap dumps they could move without hesitation to get new players. In caps case the biggest cap dump by far is untouchable and JC and Oshie are lifers as well.

That pretty much leaves Mantha and Kuznetsov... who are not broken down players and could easily have a better season on whatever team acquires them than whoever we get for 8th overall. Imagine Kuz + 8OA for DeBrincat and Kuz outscores him next year on a playoff bound Ottawa.

Capitals also have a hodgepodge of players that don't fit together behind Ovechkin-Strome-Wilson which itself is more of an adequate line than a great one. Oshie and Backstrom for their chemistry are just too slow combined at this point to be together plus will likely spend lots of time on IR between the two of them. Milano is a dud with Backstrom. Mantha is also too slow to be with Backstrom and his lumbering style needs a shifty puckhound buzzsaw Bertuzzi/Garland winger to compliment him and a fast incisive C so doesn't fit with Kuznetsov either. If you just try to assemble a jigsaw puzzle out of the pieces on the roster it would have to be something like

Ovechkin Strome Wilson
??? Kuznetsov Oshie
Snively Backstrom ???
Milano Dowd Mantha

Where McMichael would best fit in place of Kuznetsov and Protas would best fit in place of Dowd probably.

Since Mantha and Kuznetsov are the odd men out, I'd move Mantha for someone like Garland from Vancouver and Kuznetsov to Colorado for their 1st and whatever futures. Get Bertuzzi and Orlov/Gavrikov with the resulting cap space and the best they can for Fever

Ovechkin Strome Wilson
Bertuzzi McMichael Oshie
Snively/Frank Backstrom Garland
Milano Protas Dowd

Orlov/Gavrikov Jensen
Alexeyev/Sandin Carlson
Sandin/Alexeyev TVR

The forward lineup becomes much more shifty/aggressively attacking and less passively reliant on plays happening at least, and the defense if healthy is about as solid as it can be with Carlson, Jensen, Sandin all part of it going forward. Get a coach like Brunette or someone who can attack with 4 lines and play good firewagon hockey extracting as much offense as possible from that bottom 6

Grier has traded down from 11th overall all the way to the late 1st round for 2 2nds and went with a huge quantity deal for Meier already. Though he might decide that he's gotten enough secondary assets and would go for BPA now.

1st, 2nd, 3rd, Fever is what I'd offer, if he's still of the same mindset that should be enough

less than 0% that Michkov slides to 8 so don't even get me angry with discussions about it cause he's such a beast and i'm already pissed we have no chance to draft him lol

why do ppl think Debrincat is available? genuine question as im not sure if I missed anything.

I have a hard time thinking Ott gave up a 7OA, 2nd rd, and 3rd rd picks for his services for 1 year... and that year being 1 where they were expected to make good progress, but not really have a chance. He's an RFA.. so i guess there could be rumblings of him not wanting to sign there?
