This is always a curious claim to me because Washington has maybe the lowest give-a-shit player in the league in Kuznetsov. Even the effort of guys like Ovechkin, Carlson, and Mantha have been questioned while Wilson has been a core member of the team.

Unless the argument is that Kuznetsov and the others would give even less of a shit without Wilson around?
Maybe there is another super low effort guy available besides Kuzy?

Tom Wilson is on pace for 41 points this year despite heavy power play usage, which puts him. And his defensive metrics are rather pedestrian.

He got his all star bid this year because of name recognition and flair. Which is fine! It's an exhibition. But being an all star doesn't mean he's actually had a good year. Strome, Mantha, and Protas all have been significantly better players this year.

Which brings me to my next point: Tom Wilson's perceived value is still through the roof and maybe the window to trade him isn't closed!
Of course his value is
Zegras in play according to Seravalli. That's the sort of younger upside play I'd put the first rounder in play for. Maybe not a true two-way center but certainly a skill upgrade and still quite young at 22. He's off to a poor start this year and may not be a Verbeek style player. But for a team like the Caps that's rather skill deficient and has a lot of cap space I'd take the gamble.
Zegras is not a well liked player, and is struggling mightily. I wouldn’t spend a 1st on him.

I’d trade a D prospect for him, but not a pick.

Anaheim has many quality blueliners on the way that figure to be better than what Washington can offer. I don't know if he's well liked but there's remaining upside and perhaps peak value to coax out. Anaheim hasn't exactly been ideal the past couple seasons. A player like that could benefit from joining a more established group.

Big picture and more foundationally they likely need better forecheckers, more well-rounded/high IQ centers controlling the middle and a more dynamic, productive back-end. Zegras is none of those things. But it's a value opportunity and a mid-first is IMO a worthwhile gamble nonetheless. In part because they'll already have a few cheap ELCs soon and need to shoot for pure offensive upside. Maybe the motor isn't so much there with Zegras to this point but the raw skill definitely fits the bill.

I'd wager anyone that shakes loose on the trade market will have associated warts. Maybe it's more contractual or a question of organizational direction/fit triggering a move. Zegras is also sidelined now and overall seems more of an off-season/draft trade when more teams are in play. I'm not sure anything better is likely to shake loose over the next six months or so.
Hanifin or Kuzmenko could be decent value targets. Duclair also, though he's a bit redundant. Pretty bare list as far as Caps needs go. I can buy holding on to the pick now as they figure out how they stack up in the East. If the pick is inside the top ten I wouldn't do it. Thereafter, though, and I'd think about it and if they were to be buyers I think that's a pretty tempting idea in that it offers immediate help and also a very young player still.

Joe B trying to force this "Outlaw" nickname down our throats every 45 seconds is getting old. It's so lame. Why has he made it his personal crusade to give Chucky a nickname? He's not Godzilla or Holtbeast...he hasn't earned a cool nickname yet. He's been here a year and a half and is a backup goalie having a tremendous season playing above his means. I like the guy but holy crap chill out Joe.

Well…of course Anaheim had great D prospects. That why they traded Drysdale for Gauthier.

However, they seem to be “over” Zegras. Why do you think that is? Because he’s a problem child that has attitude problems, and seemingly angers those around him. Add to it that he’s regressing ….. hard pass for any true value.

Like I said, I’d trade a D prospect (like Alexeyev or Chesley), to refill their pipeline. But thats it

I’d be down with Zegras for our 1st if we’re gonna be picking ~ middle of the round. Prior to this (injury plagued) season he had back to back 60 pt seasons on a garbage team. He is still so young, with more upside to his game potentially. He’d immediately become our best young offensive center (over CMM, Lappy, and Protas).

Have no idea what his issue is in Anaheim, but I’d gamble on Carbs being able to work with him. Leaving a situation where he’s asked to carry a tanking team as 1C might do wonders for his attitude. This team badly needs his type of creativity, and skill at a scarce position.

Random aside: I don’t think Kuzmenko is going anywhere. Watching their broadcasts, it seems like Tocchet is just playing mind games with him to get his compete up. No way they give up that goal scoring for their playoff push.

Maybe it's because of the cowboy hat promotion.

I thought his nickname was chucky sideburns?

Starting to think CMM has “Hagelin Hands”.
He gets a lot of chances, but rarely finishes.

For a team that is goal starved, maybe it makes sense to see if AA can help drive offense from the blue line.

Honestly, when things are this bad, ugly goals are the only way out. Get the puck to the points, and let them fire away. Maybe we get some lucky deflections, bounces.

Washington Capitals

Prediction: Caps add at the trade deadline

Goaltending alone will likely keep the Capitals in the playoff hunt around the trade deadline. If they're close, GM Brian MacLellan will undoubtedly try to bolster the team in an effort to get Washington back to the playoffs after missing last season. They have draft capital to play with, having three second-round picks in 2025. Maybe it's a rental. Maybe someone with term. Undoubtedly it will be a forward, given their depth on the blue line.
