Washington Capitals

Prediction: Caps add at the trade deadline

Goaltending alone will likely keep the Capitals in the playoff hunt around the trade deadline. If they're close, GM Brian MacLellan will undoubtedly try to bolster the team in an effort to get Washington back to the playoffs after missing last season. They have draft capital to play with, having three second-round picks in 2025. Maybe it's a rental. Maybe someone with term. Undoubtedly it will be a forward, given their depth on the blue line.

I’m calling shenanigans.

It's probably more an offseason move but I'd look at trading Carlson. He's 34 with a lot of miles on him and he's not nearly as effective as he once was (to be expected). And it's not like he's contributing to Ovie's goal chase any more.

If he nets a first round pick or better I think you have to pull the trigger.

I think that any player on this roster should be available for a (potential) young high end center/top pairing defenseman or a draft pick in the top 5. Carlson is now in the same territory that Oshie was in 2-3 seasons ago. Still a valuable player but there are signs of inevitable demise everywhere you look.

Of the players that have seen NHL ice this season, I don't see a single one that will be an indispensable member of the next successful core group. That means they are all available.

So we have the old line, the brittle line, the up and coming but not there line and the we grind but have "Oh #$*(&" moments line. On D it's "who farted" up and down the lines. In goal we have DK "where'd the puck go?" Joking aside, the conflicting keep a team around Ovi's goal chase vs go all in on building for the future feels like it's not getting either done. At least the Pens suck this year...

They don't even have the balls to trade Kuznetsov who requested a trade. They ain't gonna trade Carlson.

Because no one wanted Kuzy at his salary. Kuzy really doesn't care about playing hockey anymore. Who wants THAT on their team?

I, and some others here, have wanted JC420 traded for years. Someone would take him. IMO, they should of traded him instead of Orlov.

I suppose he's not indispensable but I'd hesitate to shop Dylan Strome unless a fantastic offer came in. I could see him contributing as a high-end 2C for the duration of his contract and maybe the final year or two Washington can field a competitive roster if they play their cards right.

I truly do wonder what Nic Dowd could fetch at the TDL. Edmonton and Toronto both need bottom six centers and Dowd is one of the best options in the league. I wouldn't be shocked if he could fetch a first round pick given how good he is and his sweetheart contract. He's been a great contributor to the Capitals but again, by the time Washington is competitive again Dowd is likely to have fallen off quite a bit.

I know i get hate every time i suggest it but the third (McMichael) line is struggling a bit right now, so why not break it up. I’d like to see Protas at 1RW with OV and Strome.

I'd like to see the Ovie - Strome - Patches line get some run to see if something could be there. I do agree the Mantha - McM - Protas line seems to have cooled but either way with Milano coming back and Oshie now back I don't see how lines 2 & 3 aren't completely revamped in the coming week or so.

The problem with a player like Dowd is that he is most valuable to teams that a) will be drafting late and b) have thin farm systems. Caps need foundational pieces and it's highly unlikely that they can that in a Dowd trade.

You gotta give to get and Caps have very little to give. Strome can bring teams with deep prospect pools to the table in a way that few other Caps' assets can. Caps might actually get that fantastic offer for him.

There is no point in waiving Kuzy right now. We aren’t replacing him with anyone and we get nothing in return. If we can’t get a bag of pucks for him at the trade deadline, try again in the off season. At worst waive him before next season to make room for cap/prospect playing time. To waive him now doesn’t help this team now or tomorrow.

It helps immediately, because the minutes he gets would go to somebody that isn't him.

Oilers fan coming in peace. With Bears arrival I wonder if one of your RD could shake loose. What would it cost to get a package of Jensen/TVR and Lindgren off the Caps? Would a mini rebuild with some futures be in the cards if the Caps miss playoffs this year?

Trying to gauge value here. And Oilers NEED to go All In in the McDavid era.

Lindgren
Jensen or TVR (your preference)

For

Ceci (included for Cap purposes and can be flipped for another pick, solid in a top 4 role but brings zero offence)
Bourgault (2021 1st round pick)
Petrov (Russian skilled winger who tore up OHL scoring, maybe would fit well with Ovies mentorship?)
2024 2nd
2025 3rd

Thoughts?

If we ship Chuck Sideburns out, then we have given up on the season.

IMHO, Caps would likely find value here.
