My expectations for this team have been low since the Gonchar turnover to Straka

Ah the memories. People can say what they want but that is pretty clutch by Straka and the difference of going golfing and continuing in the playoffs.

More speculation, but here's someone else suggesting that the Capitals make Tom Wilson available if they become sellers this season (at around the 8:00 mark of the video).

It makes a ton of sense. There's no one on the roster that would yield a higher return than Wilson right now and teams would be lining up for his services especially if they make him available this year when he's not a rental.

Washington has to consider it. How much value does he have to Washington if they aren't going to be competitive this year? Will Wilson even want to re-sign in DC, or is he going to want to go to a more competitive team in 2024?

Now would be the season to sell him to extract absolute max value from him if they are unsure if he's going to re-sign in DC. I'd think he'd get a minimum of two and possibly three grade A assets (first round pick/blue chip prospect/good roster player). If Vrana got a first + Mantha, Wilson will likely get much more.

Oh and trade Carlson too.

I don't think the team ever decides to move Wilson. He seems beloved by the organization, definitely the fan base, and seems tailor made to be the guy to pick up the C and lead a post Ovi world as for as team expectations go.

I hadn't really thought about whether he'd want to move though, I guess i'd take that for granted. But I just cannot imagine a world where they're looking to unload him without a monstrous return.

Id like to see Lavi gone after season.

Why wait till after the season? This is his 3rd year, has he shown he is capable of improving the way this team plays? What is the point in keeping him right now? He, and his assistants, need to be fired asap. Worst thing that will do is make us keep losing games with whoever the interim coach is.

Interesting that the first segment of the Marek Show and Seravalli's Daily Faceoff show the Caps are a main subject, specifically are the Caps sellers?

Listen to the respective shows for context (yes, I'm lazy) and draw your own conclusions regarding their analysis, but I don't see the Caps moving (**SPOILER**) Strome at all.

The timing's pretty odd, though, no?

In my mind, if the team is not making the playoffs, every option must be explored. Wilson, Orlov, Carlson, Mantha, Jensen, Sheary, Oshie, etc. You gotta look at all the options.

The only thing that I'd be weary off is doing anything to further decrease the quality of the center lineup. Ovechkin needs help to get to the record and the task will become very difficult if he doesn't have a decent center to play with. Kuznetsov and Strome both have an array of issues but, if either of them goes, they gotta be replaced with a comparable quality player.

I don't think they will either, but there is a lot of logic to it if they want to pursue a mini-rebuild so that they can be competitive in, say, the final 2 years of Ovechkin's contract. If they are continuing on the current course then re-signing him kind of just becomes like the Sharks re-signing Tomas Hertl, where it doesn't really help the Sharks win and they just impulsively decided they needed to do it.

I'm fully in the sell Wilson boat, he is by far the most valuable asset that we currently posses and could make or break the summer for us. But I can't see it happening. He is very likely to be the next Captain for the Washington Capitals whenever Ovechkin leaves. He will be the man of the house.

There is a reason why teams would be lining up for his services. Its because he is a very unique player. His combination of size, tenacity, speed and ability to police the ice is unmatched. Oh and he is also really good at hockey. I could see him being next captain after Ovechkin is done.

Roster has many other players who should be moved (albeit with smaller return but still). No need to throw away a player that you cannot replace.

You gotta give Ovechkin a good enough center to play with, rebuild or not.

Horvat was also mentioned as a possibility, albeit I think more in the context of a Backstrom replacement if and when there's resolution there.

He is unique, but it's hard to make the case that he will be enough to make this team competitive this year or next year. If the goal is to get one or two more Cup runs with Ovie on the roster then I think you have to consider dealing Wilson. Tweaking isn't going to make this team competitive, they need a significant infusion of talent and the only way I can really see that happening is by making a few savvy signings/trades and having an infusion of young talent. They don't have any gamebreakers in the pipeline now, but trading Wilson could change that. Trading Carlson could have changed that.

4 years left at 11.5 million. There's no way they can get him, makes no sense.

Horvat is a guy I kinda hope makes to FA cause I think he'd be a good pickup for a retool next year, but I just don't see it happening. Also wonder if he'd be willing to resign here, but money talks.

Caps are now firmly in the territory where them having interest in a UFA is secondary to a UFA having interest in signing with them. Horvat would have to be seriously short on options or the contract offer would have to be firmly in the stupid territory to consider joining the Caps for the next 6-7 years.

Karlsson only makes sense with retention presumably, though even then you wonder how they could manage two RD with all of that overlap. Maybe Karlsson could help reduce Carlson's TOI further but I'd still have some doubts as to Karlsson's durability.

With Wilson you'd need an exceptional prospect coming back and that list is a pretty short. Even shorter among teams positioned to buy. NJD with Hughes/Nemec comes to mind as a fit, though within the division probably wouldn't happen. Would LA give up Byfield and more? Would Seattle do Wright & Firkus? I don't think Toronto has the pieces. Dallas maybe could be another that does. Minnesota maybe if they get back in the mix. You can't rule anything out if they're not going anywhere this season but it would have to be an exceptional offer. Something almost unrivaled in recent trades.

I suggested this last year when he was healthy, just brainstorming as to ways to miraculously infuse this core with guys to make them competitive the next 4 years.

And I was basically told to get f***ed, like I had insulted everyone’s mom. So, uh, good luck with that! At least you haven’t been burned at the stake…yet.

If you’re paying attention to Twabby over the years, he eventually starts pumping trade ideas for players he critiques regularly. Wilson, formerly in his crosshairs, next up.

No mention of trading Kuzy this summer, when his value was at its highest since 2018….because he’s a Twabby favorite.

Point is…..most everyone knows it’s just the typical noise…..so don’t expect a furious backlash to him on this lol….

Wilson is not untouchable, nobody is other than Ovy really, so blow my socks off with a hockey trade. Futures is for losers….not there quite yet.

Byfield is a likely bust. They'd move him in a second for Wilson. Just like i would trade 6 McMichael's for 1 Wilson.

I don't think he's available, he's our next captain. If there is a team desperate to compete next season with a top-4 pick i could see it happening because i'm not sure Capitals could say no to Mitchkov/Fantilli/Yager + more (on top of Bedard) but personally i don't see any team willing to do that.

Is Byfield a bust is just another bigger body guy that'll take a bit longer to fully grow into his frame? Hard to say at this point but as far as center longshots it's still not a terrible one to take I think. They could do better but additional assets in such a package would be key. LA's still got a lot to offer.

Hard to see something like that involving Wilson aligning, of course. That's a big energy piece to subtract at a time when they'll need it most to have much hope of competing. Even if there are prudent reasons to be cautious of extending him it's another hard decision that would be difficult to imagine them erring on the side of responsibility and/or taking a potential step back to avoid. They've shown time and again they will tolerate a lot of risk to stay afloat. It's why I find it very likely they attempt to buy in the coming months once they're healthy again. Another winger to replace Brown would seem to be up their alley, esp. if the likes of Milano & Johansson aren't consistently effective.

Wilson is a good winger and a great asset to have. I'd wager a guess that he sells a lot of tickets and jerseys, too. I don't think his on-ice impact measures up to that of a quality top-6 center or a top pairing defenseman. As such, I would have traded Wilson as part of a package for Eichel without a moments thought.

One concern is the contractual situation. Caps may be eager to keep Wilson around long term but is Wilson interested in spending the bulk of his remaining career in a rebuild?

In my mind, the only thing that brings this aged group back into contention is a significant upgrade at center. The only way to get there would include giving up a lot of value. Wilson has a lot of value and most other Caps assets do not.

Not interested in the least in trading Wilson for a bag of magic beans that may end up being as good as Tom Wilson. This is a different team — and a worse one — without him so I want something over the top if we’re giving him up. He’s on the very short list of future captain candidates and power forwards who can skate like the wind, score 20+ goals, hit like a truck, and play PP1, RW1, and PK1 are pretty much the rarest of breeds in today’s NHL. If I’m making a list of players to trade and Ovechkin is last (obviously), Wilson is second to last and it’s going to hurt someone very badly to pry him out of DC.

Wilson is the boat. I’m taking the boat, you guys can have the mystery box. Maybe it’ll even be a boat!
