I wonder if Ted plans on selling the Caps when Ovy retires. We should have sold players by now and if we don’ t soon, it’s going to hurt for a long time And really painful rebuild.

Took a glance at the RFA market in the summer. To kind of see what's around there in case they gain some assets at the deadline that they would be willing to move again in the summer:

Timo Meier - RFA - The big fish, he'll likely re-sign long-term with whoever acquires him.

Pierre-Luc Dubois - RFA - He's going to moved in the summer. Could be a very interesting option if he's willing to stay here long-term.

Alex DeBrincat - RFA - Really interesting one, could very well be available, as i don't see him wanting to stay in Ottawa. Expensive, though.

Jesper Bratt - RFA - Doubtful one as it's divisional rival. Devils want to keep him for sure but can they fit him under the cap, if they acquire someone non-rental at the TDL?

Vince Dunn - RFA - Having a very good season in Seattle. Likely wants to stay there, but could be a nice option if he doesn't.

K'Andre Miller - RFA - I don't see them moving him to us.

Alexis Lafreniere - RFA - I don't see them moving him to us.

Troy Terry - RFA - I can see him staying in Anaheim. Would be a risky move aswell.

Shane Pinto - RFA - I don't see him moving either.

Filip Chytil - RFA - Rangers are going to run into cap issues soon. Still doubt they'd move him, let alone to a divisional rival.

Yegor Sharangovich - RFA - Devils too will run into cap issues. They've dealt with the Capitals before, so it's possible.

Ross Colton - RFA - Cap casuality?

Alex Newhook - RFA - Cap casuality? I doubt it but who knows? Avs need to re-sign Byram too.

Reclamation projects:

Denis Gurianov - RFA - Having a really poor season. Available for cheap/free in the summer, i assume.

Dante Fabbro - RFA - Having a poor season. Could be available if the Predators can't move their big D contracts in Ekholm/McDonagh.

Alexandre Texier - RFA - In the player assistance program, no idea why. Plays in Switzerland this season.

Two possibilities: 1) trade with a team that wants to move or can't afford a player, and the Caps lose asset(s), and 2) an offer sheet, which doesn't require losing any assets and forces the other team to pay up or let go.

Cheeky offersheet to Lafreniere, who says no?

Other than all the GMs in an act of collusion against player movement ofc.

Per Spector report.

Tampa Bay Lightning: Their limited draft and prospects capital could see them pursue an affordable checking-line forward like Washington’s Garnet Hathaway or Chicago’s Sam Lafferty. They could also pursue a depth defenseman.

That's 2013-14, the last time the Caps missed the playoffs. The coach was fired and the GM was passively fired by allowing his contract to expire.

Here's where we are now, about a week from the TDL:

In a few weeks BUF and OTT should jump the Caps, leading to their worst standings finish in 20 years, when the firesale/rebuild happened.

I don't know how much Ted will factor injuries into the decision making, but if we're being consistent and not clouded by the memory of the Cup win, the kinds of drastic changes many fans are demanding have to be on the table.

We can hem and haw about whether the FO seem like they have the intestinal fortitude or lack the organizational self-awareness or whatever else, but this is what it looks like when all your investments are circling the drain and you're clinging to a sunk-cost fallacy.

I think It’s feasible the we end up in 7th, with Philly eventually passing us.

If we lose tonight, the slide will continue for a while.

Well you take what you can get, but TB doesn't have any picks until the third round this year and the second round next year and the way they're built, those will be picks late in those rounds.

I’d be legitimately shocked if Hathaway could be had for a third, which is the first pick Tampa owns. I think it’s more likely he returns a first than a third.

We'll take their 2025 1st round pick for it.

I’d like to see some trade related scratches here soon, thank you
Assuming the Captain is in…..I think they see how they respond tonight…..if they lose, all bets are off.

surely they can’t lose to a rested Anaheim who just got whooped 6-1 on Tuesday?! ;)

No kidding, to lose to the Ducks is the official nail in the coffin. So frustrating how they beat the Bruins in Boston and just went down hill. As bad as they've been, it's still remarkable they held on to get this far with all these key injuries. This next week should be exciting movement wise.

I’d be shocked…..
Nick Foligno returned a first last year. Nicolas Deslauriers returned a third. Calle Jarnkrok returned a second, a third, and a seventh. Frank Vatrano returned a fourth.

Hathaway is closer to Foligno and Jarnkrok (though Jarnkrok is admittedly more of an offensive player than Hathaway) than he is Deslauriers and Vatrano. He may not get a first but he should return more than Deslauriers and Vatrano unless it’s a strong buyers market.

Looking at Cap Friendly is pretty depressing. A lot of dead weight taking up huge chunks of salary for years to come. It's hard to have good feelings about some guys that used to be among my favorite players. It will be hard not to resent them by the time they're gone.
This. Love Oshie, Backstrom, etc. but man I'm going to view them differently at the end of this which sucks.

I dunno, neither guy cheats the game (ahem Kuzy, Mantha). I know those two are always giving whatever they have, especially Oshie. Nick is a cooler head, but you know he’s worked his ass off to come back.

So it’s not like they’re stealing money. It’s more on BMac and Ted imho. You just don’t give big contracts to reward past performance in pro sports.
