Yeah, I know. It's fun to shit on the Leafs and watch them fail, I get it. I feel almost a kinship with them though.

They haven't won a Cup since 1967 and they haven't won a playoff series since '94. An entire generation (and now generations) of Leafs fans know only heartbreak and futility in the postseason. Back when Washington played them in 2017 they were the young exciting team with a really bright future. They had hope and excitement and one of the best players in the world. Even though they lost that series the team and it's fans felt like they were on the rise and building something special. And they have been in the regular season but their playoff failures are now the stuff of legend and everything they do in the regular season seems a bit meaningless. They just can't get over the hump and even though they're really good, their divisional opponents are just a bit better.

It's almost like looking in the mirror to the Young Guns era.
What? you're way off.

I assume you meant '04.

I do wonder what the long term prognosis on Carlson is. That one video of him skating made me very concerned. I wonder if they want to hold onto Jensen if that's the case. Can't imagine you go into next year with potentially no healthy RD.

Oh wait, we got Mcilrath at least.
I think this is a perfect example of how their "We won't rebuild, let's double down on vets" mentality ends up creating a risk of needing to rebuild even sooner.

I'll be honest, I also didn't realize how God Damn old Jensen was. I was all about signing him because I thought he was 30 at most, knowing he'll be 33 at the start of the next year.

Insane how much they've invested in defense the last 4 or 5 years and how little they've to shown for it. They're in desperate need of Iorio taking a jump or Ryan Chesley being both willing to sign and immediately ready to make the jump after next year if they don't want to be stuck spending massive capital on middling RDs.

Yeah Carlson's skating was so tentative that you'd have to think he's got a long way to go before he comes back. So the smart money would be on him not returning this season - especially if they fall even more behind in the playoff race.

This is who I'd have on the trading block because I think they are hurting the team and I don't believe they are ever going to turn things around (because of age, injury, motivation / attitude, etc):

Oshie
Eller
Mantha
Kuzy

This is who I'd have on the trading block because they are UFA's etc and unlikely to be re-signed, so might as well get something from them:

Gus
Sheary
Aube-Kubel (likely has next to no value but Protas or Snively should be playing ahead of him anyway).
Irwin (see above)

Guys like Hathaway, Majo, TvR - I believe they are earning their salary and could return next season and still be useful players on the roster (so they go under the let's not blow it all up category).

Orlov - if he's not going to re-sign then he should be moved or he will depart for no return end of season.
Jensen - will be looking for a decent raise and term for his final contract so is similar to Orlov (see above).

Backstrom - he's not going anywhere. People need to just stop talking about him and face reality.

The only way Backstrom goes, is if he were to retire, which is doubtful.

I’m of the opinion that any UFA should be moved. All of our UFAs have positive value, and we have a lot of them. Cash your chips and reassess. We could clean up. Orlov alone fetches a first, and maybe a high end prospect.

From a player perspective, the guys we have under contract would be too difficult to move at the deadline. Some of them need to, but Summer seems like the best time to deal with that unless the situation presents itself.

Blackhawks acquire Zaitzev from Ottawa.
Seeing what it cost Ottawa to move the Zaitsev contract with another year remaining on it, you can forget about moving Mantha. It'll cost!

Yahoo Fantasy stats show how awful Mantha has been this season.

Yeah, Mantha is not going anywhere. He is at his absolute bottom value. You would have to pay premium just to get rid of him. At this point, with only one year left on his contract, the possible outcomes are (1) he catches fire in the last 15 games and you can get value from him in the offseason, or (2) he catches fire next year and is a contributor, or (3) he continues to suck and you ride out the shitty contract and are finished with him after next season.

I don’t think there’s anything in his contract that says we can’t put them on waivers and send them down to the minors.
