Probably more like force Ted to make some tough decisions.

I imagine the past couple off-seasons have featured Ted and BMac having a conversation like this:

BMac: “Look Ted, we’re the oldest team in the league, we gotta move on from players x,y, and z.”

Ted: “Whoa there Brian! Lighten up buddy, we just won the Stanley Cup! Don’t we get like a 10 year grace period?”

BMac: <stares blankly>

Ted: “Look, I need to sell those players’ jerseys (we’re going with 41 different alt-jerseys next year). I badly need that income to help pay that terrible Beal contract. So, no, we’re keeping all those great champions. Now, get the f*** out.”
"41 different alt-jerseys" is a good line. Well done.

Exactly. It’s not about the physical play. It is about the tenacity and urgency. In bigger guys it usually shows up as physicality. But if he would just get after it, and play with some urgency, he would be much more effective. Physical or not.
Indeed and they aren't winners with that attitude. Kuzy is in the same boat imho too. World talent and we know he can be a hero, however the motivation just isn't apparent with both. If either of those guys played with motivation we wouldn't be near the bottom of the playoff contenders.

I think it goes down like this:
1. Take the punchers chance this year - IF we can find some health, we have a good deep team. Don’t need major adds. Probably just a RD.
2. TDL is for futures - those won’t help us during the OV chase as it will take 2-5 years to see the draft picks get NHL ready
3. Change direction in offseason. Lots of UFA’s and flexibility. Plus hockey trades are easier in the offseason paired with draft. But I’d say more likely this offseason than years past where we may try and move some high end contracts like JC74, Kuzy, Oshie, Mantha. Not move all of them, but see what deal makes sense. A major trade could open that window a bit more for 2-3 years.
TDL is assets, what you do with them is up to you. Holding them and drafting with them is a choice, sure, but moving them for other roster players at a post-playoff date is a possibility nobody is really discussing in this whole "anything but all-in is a rebuild" phase of the season

I want the team to make good moves, get good players, get rid of bad players and get some good assets. I want high draft picks, top 6 forwards and a Stanley cup. I want the players i like and not the players i don't. I want my team to be what i want it to be. .

if they have no chance
sell the ones who play forward
some will be all mad

I think everyone is missing the peradine that this is what will be with AO chasing the goal record.

Yeah this is not the season for us to trade future away. The chances dont increase enough to justify shipping 1sts or "top" prospects out. Best chance lies on Willy and Carlson returning at their best form and some sleeping oldies catching fire.

+ we have already traded away 2nd for -24, so hard to see them going crazy with the other 3 top60 picks we have for the 23&24 with the "punchers chance" we have.

Maybe a dumpster diving depth for D for low cost makes a little sense. But for offence we already have enough guys in Hershey that can play limited roles.

All are mad
Team plays sad
That's too bad

Aka i have no idea about the form of an haiku
No rhyming required. A haiku has five syllables in the first and third stanzas and seven in the second. So for yours it might go like…

All posters are mad
Old, broken team plays real bad
Tough to watch, it is

They’re squeezing water out of a stone hoping to get Ovechkin his personal milestone which is totally antithetical to what the sport is supposed to be about.

They aren’t winning another Cup with this group.

They should have sold after the 2nd consecutive first round exit. We’re now at 4 consecutive first round exits and it’s likely they’ll miss the postseason altogether.

Frankly, everyone involved should be pilloried.

I would argue they are caught in the middle of trying to both be competitive and get Ovechkin the milestone. This is complicated further to their loyalty to their core, rightly or wrongly. I do agree that winning a cup or even multiple series is highly unlikely with the current group.

If they were only concerned with getting Ovechkin his goal record, they could do whatever to acquire legit top line talent for his line and do whatever is needed to optimize the power play. And do it at whatever cost, present or future. I don't see that happening though.

Can we just start moving some folks now? This line-up…

Probably longer too, but out at least 3 games. 4 if it's an actual week he's talking about.

Could be a blessing in disguise from a decision making standpoint. The next three are against Carolina, Florida, and Carolina so they’re looking at three likely losses. If that happened that would make four Ls in five games since the ASG.

It sucks that Ovi will seemingly miss the Stadium Series game and this really hurts his chances at 50, which is the worst part of this (strictly from a hockey perspective, obviously), but if the bottom falls out here then the path at the trade deadline should be clear.

A roster with too many walking (skating) wounded (e.g., Oshie), simply wounded (Willie, JC), declining (Eller), out for personal/family reasons (Ovie), underperforming (Kuz, Mantha), overused/back too soon (Orlov, Kuemper?), and fringe (Irwin) players does not inspire confidence. Management needs some amount of team success to have a marketable product. Many fans will accept a short-term lag in success if the future promises significant improvements. It's difficult to imagine long-term success with the team as it is at present. Perhaps even the prospect of achieving #895 will be called into question.

Edited to acknowledge reporting on Ovie's absence.

So we have a depleted lineup? Sort of how we accumulated all those wins in December? The narrative is sell no matter what now? Anyways I’m sorta interested to see how the team responds without Ovechkin.
