I think at some point, if you value your prospects, you have to make space for them to graduate. We've sent a number of young players out in the past several years and they've found success elsewhere. That's fine. But eventually, don't you think the Caps want to keep and cultivate some of their drafted talent, especially because they're up against the cap and cheap young talent has to be part of the solution.
This. They have some above average blue line prospects and with the cap crunch, why would you trade them? They need a chance.

Ok....My original question was who goes?
Um... whoever Seattle takes or BMac decides is most expendable. The point is the team cannot afford all the vets and they have inexpensive quality prospects who need a chance to show what they are really capable of before we decide they aren't good enough to do the job. My opinion on which LD is the best choice to let go is irrelevant.

The expansion draft will answer that for us. When 2 of Dillon, Schultz, or Jensen will have a “free to a good home” sign hanging around their necks

If its Schultz or Jensen, that doesnt help Fehervary. Signing TVR would indicate that both Schultz and Jensen will not be protected. Carlson Orlov and Dillon will be. Of course it could be one of the goalies

Patrick Marleau is open to being traded to playoff contender. Does he fit? Will the Sharks take Panik in return? Inquiring minds want to know.

Here is a question. Can the Flyers trade Niskanen and can Niskanen play if he wants to?

I think Flyers' fans and media blame all of their defensive woes this year on Niskanen's retirement. If he came back, I think they would at least want him to play for them lol..

Lets set that aside for the moment. There is talk of the Flyers as deadline sellers and Niskanen is in the last year of his deal.

The Flyers are only 2 points back of Boston for the 4th seed. Boston has games in hand, but 2 points with still a month and a half to go.

Are you suggesting we may want to trade for him? Or just curious if the Flyers could/would trade him to anyone else?

Its a one step at a time thing. Would I want Niskanen back for the playoffs?? Hell, yea. The Caps have 4 solid RD now, where would you fit him in if they had him. What would it cost to get him including clearing of the cap space to fit him? I dont know. Niskanen leaving damaged the Caps and him leaving gutted the Flyers. I would think having him would be good. Is it realistic? I doubt it.

I am curious. So, I asked a question. Niskanen retired because of concerns over covid. It might be he has less concern and would want to play now or 30 days away. Might be he walked away and isnt interested.
Can a retired player unretire this far into a season?

I believe there is some approval process whereby all 31 teams in the league have to sign off on Niskanen unretiring. I imagine many teams wouldn't sign off on that right now, especially in the East.

Don't quote me on this though as I'm not really sure, I just know Kovalchuk had to go through some similar hoops to return to the NHL after he "retired" from the Devils.

I would assume Niskanen would have to file reinstatement papers to get back into the NHL. No clue though if he’d become a UFA or if his contract also becomes reinstated and he’s still Flyers property. I guess he technically voided the last year of his deal instead of going on LTIR, correct?

I would assume his contract remains in force and Philly could use him how they wish
