Just uses the other sites already available. don’t need to wait 6 monthsIt'll probably take 6 months or so and there's another Capgeek/Capfriendly-website up and running because that type of site will generate unique and reoccuring visits and in turn ad revenue.
To keep to themselves.
Multiple teams paid to use there API.
Honestly if I was a Washington Capitals fan I'd even be pissed off at my team.
So what's next? CapNerd? CapCool? CapLaughing?
With the reactions in this thread you'd think that the Capitals did something vile.
And every team in the league except WashingtonIt will only be for us to use.
When you're so out of touch as to pay large amounts of money for something that is made near-valueless by the very act of purchasing it AND in so doing anger your entire customer base and more, yes, organizational death is deserved.
Apparently it benefits them... so to say it benefits no one is a bit of a stretch.Nah, it's just an unnecessary purchase that benefits no one and inconveniences millions of fans.
Not vile ....just annoying. I bet they even pissed off some of their own fans too, with this move.
Naw, we will charge them a subscription. And every team in the league except Washington
They did. They paid extra to slaughter a golden goose. With the reactions in this thread you'd think that the Capitals did something vile.
They purchased it to shut it down? I’m confused
The Caps probably would like to have one for their internal use and this is the easiest way to accomplish it. Ofc, when the next site pops up then some other team will purchase that and so forth.
They likely wanted the site infrastructure and UX. And likely it was a 'no licensing, full sale or nothing' situation. They're bringing it in-house. Private website.
Yeah, but they could still allow a public version for fans to use....I don't get why they have to completely shut it down.
Because fans don't care about it, according to Gary BettmanWhy doesn't the NHL just have a site like this?

The problem with this is that a large part of the value of the site is the data, and those data aren't going to be updated as consistently and effectively anymore because instead of being a general resource for all, it's now Caps-specific, and so the contact networks behind getting that information no longer have any reason to keep coughing that info up.Obstructing other teams from using the site is a competitive advantage.
