It interesting though that Keefe chose to play Samsonov against a 100 point playoff team, while Murray gets games against none playoff Montreal and Ottawa to start the season, when its beleived that Murray is Leafs #1 goalie. QofC seems to suggest that Keefe trusts Sammy more with the harder matchup.

I don't really think the teams factored in at all. I think tbh he wanted to start Murray on the road to ease him in without the pressure in front of the fans. Imagine if he had a rough first game and the boo birds came out or something.

Murray and Campbell are both short on confidence and the coaching staff learned a lot from Campbell on how to put Murray in a spot to succeed. I think Samsonov's issue is not mental it's he has elite physical abilities but lacks proper coaching. His question mark is did he not receive good coaching or is he uncoachable.

Washington lineup not what it used to be. But if we show up like last night it'll go poorly again. Shocked at our lack of footspeed, could not recover from any turnovers.

They were even worse then we were yesterday

Worked so well yesterday, how could he possibly not run it back?

Looking forward to seeing the All-World pairing of Muzzin-Holl continuing to be a difference-maker........

Anyone notice if Dubas was on the phone last night?

j/k

One game of being embarrassed is not enough to make a change.

Brodie and Rielly skate well enough to recover.
Holl should but a split second of hesitation isn't good enough in the NHL.
Muzzzin and Sandin need to be in position.
Giordano has to rely on his smarts and experience.

Pipe dream, Topi can skate?

Had to miss the game last night. Guess I may have been the lucky one. Disappointing . Hoping they correct things tonight.

Apparently Keefe has decided to go down with the ship.

Yup nothing Holl and Muzzin do on the ice will deter him from playing them 20 minutes a night including the final minutes of a game where they were walked repeatedly.

We have 0 roster flexibility what's he going to do in that aspect? Play Holl with Riley or sandin with Riley?

Unless we waive Holl or Muzzin the pairs can't change much until lily gets back

I think Leafs are making a mistake playing Samsonov against his former team.. IMO

Capitals players will know all his tendencies and weaknesses and exploit them even if its a revenge game for Ilya to prove they made a mistake cutting him loose.

The only other option is Murray and every team knows his tendencies. Damned if you do.....

A lot of the issues from last night are a "this team is slower than last year thing" effort and execution doesn't bring back your legs when you're 35
Scary thing is they aren't that old, Habs just made them look like they were.
Who knew that young kid Gallagher had such blazing speed?

It's a great opportunity to shake off the bad taste of last night. Come out with a good effort and get the result we are looking for and all will be forgotten.

No reason to panic in game 2 of 82. This is not a "must win" game. Do not overhype a mid October game more then it needs to be. Just go out, execute on every shift, and individually win your battles. The rest will take care of itself.

just play hockey

I think a lot of guys on this team have a lot of miles and historical injuries that are slowing them down.
Muzzin
Tavares
Gio (was pretty good last night but did seem a touch slow at times)

Winning tonight if Lindgren starts. Hes hot garbage.

Except Justin Holl, year 3 of trying to get him out of the lineup
Remember how long it took to get rid of Marincin

A change in mindset would be a wonderful event.

Haven't seen one since Keefe took over.

Coaches usually stick with what got them there.

I can say I don't miss Babcock's stretch pass for an icing though!!!

Leafs were 32nd overall last year in 5v5 sv% and that points to system and goes beyond simply blaming the goalies. IMO

Yesterday a team coming out flat and unable to expose a young and weaker opponent on compete level as well as Keefe claiming the team hung Murray out to dry also points many fingers his own direction.

Leafs dmen often join the rush and ill advisedly pinch at the opposition blue-line which surrenders odd man rushes against and goals against. Cole Caulfield yesterday could have outscored the Leafs on odd man rushes alone, and was the reason Keefe claimed the Leafs hung their goalie out to dry.

So are Leafs dmen following coaches game plan instilled or are they free lancing, because if they're given the green light to attack, then you can't blame them that they're not defending properly when you push offense and then pay for that aggresive game plan defensively.

A Barry Trotz "defense first system" would be an organizational change in mindset.

We're an older team. People need to adjust expectations. Look at the Pens and Bruins as examples, they routinely have poor starts of the season and by Jan are on fire.

If we were winning games 10 - 0 right now people would say it doesn't matter. So let's keep that in mind, this is easily a playoff team. The effort, organization, whatever does not matter. What matters is how they are playing in the new year going into the playoffs

I’m hoping Samsonov has a great game. Like Mess, I think he will prevail as the 1A if he just shows a little improvement in his game compared to last year. Murray was ok but he obviously hasn’t/can’t fix his glaring weaknesses ie glove hand and using his size to make himself big in the net.

What the.....? Its so early in the season. Nothing to analyze from last night. Besides Tavares missed TC.

At the same time Leafs defence sucked.

Nothing wrong with pinching.

Pinching at the wrong time is the issue.
Giving away the puck when pinching.
Trying to force a play that isn't there while pinching.

I don't believe the Leafs have had a true number one defender since ... Salming?

Heck, I'd love a Kaberle.

I've never been a big Keefe advocate. Maybe if we struggle we can throw the bank at Trotz. He'd be awesome for this team
