Little mermaid live action (friday night) -- wifes turn to pick for family movie night .. fml that one hurt. I normally stay up late playing video games drinking and smoking while the family goes to bed after family movie night .. the movie was so bad, i was so defeated I just went t bed at 10:30 pm.

Moulin Rouge at kennedy center (saturday night) - not a great show, turned into just dancers doing cover songs of lady gaga. Felt like some cruise ship entertainment.

One piece - finished it, pretty good .... feel like it devolved into new generation power ranger though, it embraces the cheese with the costumes and fighting .. series is geared towards teens and 20 somethings, not mid 40s cynical dudes

All of the live-action Disney movies have been hard to watch. The only one that was moderately entertaining was Aladdin but they're all just low-effort money grabs. I'd appreciate high-effort money grabs!

I disagree….that they turned anime into live action, but still pulled off the powers well was great. I think it has an excellent cast also. Very quirky.

Bummer on Moulin Rouge….I heard it was pretty good.

hard pass on Little Merm live action….

One Piece - it got a bit too bubble gummy pokemon/power rangery for me. I liked it, will watch more.

moulin - it was good, its big production at kennedy center ffs so it bangs but tis no hamilton or les mis imo. Much more cover show concert vs performance art imo

The act of Luffy calling out his powers and how well they pulled off the special effects, made that part bearable for me….

Nocturne getting rave reviews this morning. IGN gives it a 9/10, and I've seen a number of 10/10 reviews as well. Can't wait for this one!

Just watched the 1st episode of The Boys spin off Gen V on prime. This show is pretty cool, Will def be watching more episodes
Didnt know about this, cool .. gonna check it out

-----------

Movie ideas for this weekend?

i need something for tonight. Been on a long streak of picking mediocre movies. Nothing artsy/indie though, kinda exhausted from watching black and white film of people silently staring out of windows

beau is a afraid takes the top spot
This is interesting. I think most people view Beau is Afraid as a letdown after Ari Aster's previous two. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't nearly up to the standard he set with Midsommar and Hereditary. It certainly has its artistic merit as a visual trip thru living with an anxiety disorder turned up to 11. But even then, it's overly long and sometimes plodding, often feels pretentious for the sake of being pretentious, and purposefully leaves the audience feeling rather unfulfilled at the ending of several of its story arcs.

Nice find, very Kurosawa look.

Doesnt seem to be streaming anywhere
Yeah I have a bluray import. It is a trilogy of movies but they are not connected. Much more realistic view of what samurai life was. Some were just like clerks and not fighters. The Hidden Blade is the second one but still the first is my favorite.

IGN agrees with me: we are in the golden age of animation:

I think we're definitely in an era of way more animated content than before, but a lot of it is pretty mediocre (including several shows named in that article). There's great stuff like Arcane, Big Mouth, Inside Job, Harley Quinn, Smiling Friends, and Bojack Horseman - but for every one of those there's also a Disenchantment, Velma, F is for Family, Hoops, Thundercats Roar, or the whole moundful of shoveled out low-budget animated content on Netflix. And that's not even touching the stuff that has long overstayed its welcome (Rick & Morty, The Simpsons, Family Guy, etc).

Some of it is probably nostalgia, and a lot of it is probably survivorship bias in the pre-streaming age, but I feel like the early 2000s had a much higher average standard for animated content than today. It obviously wasn't perfect back then (Stripperella :biglaugh: ), but that was the time period in which we had Venture Bros, Samurai Jack, Tarakovsky's Clone Wars, ATHF, the original run of Futurama, Home Movies, The Boondocks, Moral Orel, etc.

Anime-style generative AI should also be tech space to watch. I recall during the covid shutdown the anime studios were overloaded leading to delays.
