richmond, virginia.
Watched it in full for the first time two years ago. I had started it before but never binged it all the way through. It’s terrific. Season 5 is meh but the ending is still good. I think Season 3 is with Hamsterdam, right? Season 4 might be the best single season of TV I’ve ever seen if I recall correctly so you’re in for a treat. My personal rankings of The Wire, from worst to first:

5. Season 5
4. Season 1
3. Season 2
2. Season 3
1. Season 4

I liked Season 2 a lot though I get why some people think it doesn’t fit. It’s pretty wild how the writers managed to make the show better and better as it goes on while a lot of shows tend to fall off.
Yeah, Hamsterdam haha.

I actually liked season 2 quite a bit. Chris Bauer killed it as Frank Sobtoka. I liked how that story line lets the Barksdale/Bell stuff slide into the background, which fits considering the events of season 1.
I've been wanting to watch the wire for a while now, just on the fence about paying for yet another streaming service
I haven't finished it yet, but it's worth the hype. I am really impressed with how well-researched and well-acted the series is.

Honestly, of them, Max is kind of the most worth it.

I use it more than any other service, maybe all of them combined. Not only is having the HBO catalog a huge boon but ever since the rebrand they've got some miscellaneous network TV that totally works for me. Getting Mythbusters on a streaming service that wasn't absurdly specific is great, and they've got a bunch of Comedy Central/adult swim/whatever to fill that mid-tier range.

Only thing "missing" is the NBC level comfort binge shows

Most of those services have 30-day free trials if you’ve never had an account with them. Or just sign up for a month, binge it, then cancel.

Max is pretty great though, despite the stupidity in getting rid of the HBO brand.

Max adding Food network, Animal palent, ID Channel and a bunch of others was clutch. HBO shows itself have been lacking this summer.

The Wire is just the best. I could talk about it for hours and hours (and have done so).

I recently rewatched the series again and I think I'm finally ready to put Season 4 as the best of the five.

Best scene ever...Jimmy and Bunk! The actors were only allowed to use one word for the entire scene. F$%K

And Omar in the courthouse had me rolling when he calls out the lawyer.

Damnit, now I have to watch it again. Weekend gone!

Seeing a clip of that scene on YouTube was what got me to watch the show back when I was in college. God, I’ve gotta watch that again now…

Sheeeeeeeeeeiiiiiit.

That was the one that did it for me. Walked in, saw that, went "what the f*** is this" and we started on season 1 immediately.

Baltimore-ish
Violent Night -- 6.5/10 .. it just wanted to be a funny forgettable holiday movie w gore and for the most part it achieved its goal. Dragged on to long.

They Cloned Tyrone - watched most of it distracted but didnt really f*** with it but reviews are really good. Plot seemed straight out of Black Dynamite, which I love.

Did anyone see Tyrone? Should I give it a honest viewing?

They Cloned Tyrone is decent multitasking fodder…..not worth fully dedicated attention IMO…..but Violent Night…..I enjoyed…..simple, effective….fun!

The Meg 2 : As preposterous as any recent Fast and Furious movie….some laughably bad moments, and some awesome giant sharks/creatures…..monster movies always get a watch from me.

I fired up Van Helsing on Netflix (the series). I recall watching part of season 1 before and lost interest, but this time around it’s stuck with me. On season 2 now….

I'm assuming that is the syfy Van Helsing series. That one was a slog for me still didn't finish the last season.

Yeah….I think I haven’t watched anything Vampy in a while, and the apocalyptic volcano blowing to make earth ”dark” hooked me…..of course they’ve gone no deeper on the big picture of the country/planet which annoys me.

Some of the later seasons will be radically different almost stand alone.

I enjoyed it. It's definitely a Blaxploitation film, so expect that going in. But it's got a bit more class and race consciousness than other films in the genre. The acting is really good. It does the same "we don't really have a defined date to this movie so we can simultaneously be 70s, 90s, and present day" thing that a lot of other movies have done. Not the most intricate plot or best visuals. But certainly worth the time spent watching.

I’m jumping in on The Wire love here. One of my fav shows ever. I agree S4 is probably the best. The show as a whole is such an incredible achievement in that by the end you see how all the different power structures in Baltimore collectively create a clusterf**k of dysfunction that fails the people, and just adds to the brutality of the drug trade.

It does all that, but is still wildly entertaining - which is a tough needle to thread.

David Simon recently did a mini-series on HBO called “We Own this City” about the corrupt Baltimore gun task force. Stars Jon Bernthal, who is great as always. Highly recommend if you liked The Wire.

I'd say it actually gets significantly better the more you pay attention to it.

Not in a way that substantially changes the plot or anything, but the attention to detail in the symbolism makes the moment stronger. As a whole, a lot of the black main characters give up a lot of what you'd call their "main life" trappings to eventually solve their problem, and the way the hood rides together is a great moment when you consider how they did it. I can't remember her name but the girl loses her weave to solve a problem, Jamie Foxx gets rid of his dress wear, etc., they play very well on the trappings of the culture for their "era" and space in time, even if that's a sort of blurred lines era between the 70's and now. Honestly, that only sells the point more.

Sure, but it still tops out as a just slightly better than average movie for me…I was entertained…..and that’s enough, but I don‘t see much of a reason to ever rewatch it….
