can someone explain The Boys in a way that will actually get me to watch it?
The simplistic view is that it’s a rated-r superhero show, but where this goes is to the flaws, the vices, the mistakes (often epic) of the hero’s, and how close some (even the ‘good’ guys) often teeter on the edge of right and wrong and just wrecking the planet.

If you’re not hooked by the first big scene in episode one, it might not be for you. It’s crazy gory, lots of debauchery….I think it’s top-5 on right now easily. Big Carl Urban fan…he’s great.

The Boys - Im a fan. A lot like Peacemaker. Show is consistent imo so if you dont feel it after a few episodes then its not for you.

Thor Love - I liked it but im not a marvel avenger super fan or purist.

Nope - excited for this. Love Peele and love going to movies made for the big screen

Not a huge Trek fan. I've tried all the series and only really liked TNG (a lot). Don't like the originals or their movies at all. The TNG movies were kinda whatever. I think there was one good one.

As for new Trek stuff, I really liked the three new movies quite a bit. I heard they're making another, so I'm up for that.

Discovery is fine. The wokeness got to be a little much, but they took it to a whole new level this season by making the ship sentient. So now they have to ask the ship for consent in dangerous situations? Bleh. I'm down with the garden variety woke stuff. We need more minority and gay/trans characters in Hollywood, and the show's got a lot of female empowerment going for it, too. But sometimes they're clumsy and overreach with it.

Picard has been a letdown so far. They say the third season is bringing back basically the whole cast of TNG, so I'll watch that. But a Picard show without any of those other characters was a mistake, in my opinion. And why the second season ditched the best new characters from the first season is beyond me. I stopped watching about 5 episodes in...

As for Strange New Worlds, it definitely got off to a strong start. They had a solid intro over a season of Discovery, and Pike and Spock are very well cast. I could do without Romijn. The character is okay, but the acting isn't. I haven't watched all the episodes yet. I loved 'em all up until the silly fantasy episode where they were all running around in medieval garb talking like idiots. Took a break after that.

On that note, I get that SNW is an homage of sorts to the original series. The story-of-the-week format is a welcome change that I like a lot. But I'd stop doing all the throwback nods and parallel episodes. The show really works when it's doing its own thing, but every time they shift gears back to a hokey rendering of an old episode/concept it falls flat for me.

I didn't like the whole trumpeting of single eps narratives for SNW which I found irritating since lets leave that shit to CBS cable shows. That said I'm ok with them to a certain degree as long as there are some season long or mini narrative arcs to be more invested on and build to.

Have not gotten back to discovery s3 yet but I do like the jumping into a future that was more distopian and where the federation is in much dire straights.

I am with you jags I'm definitely ok with more representation and when done well and right one might take note of it briefly and then its forgotten about because the stores and the show are good. I'm pretty progressive but when it is clumsy or targetting a very specific audience that really detracts from immersion I'm generally like not wasting time with this. WoT is kinda on the razers edge there. Even though I have a preconception of a character race/appearence from the book if the acting is quality I found that 100 percent of the time the whole source purist strain in me goes away. Does help to recognize that books and TV/movies are really two different creative/entertainment mediums.

Forgot I hadn't finished that last eps of Obi Wan. The big duel was cool but still super clunky somehow Obi Wan got his skillz back. I just don't think Disney has figured out what to do with SW.

Not a ST guy so I get your ratings, but Picard season 1 was fantastic. Season 2 I’m letting marinate….

I have sort of passed time on the treadmill slogging through Umbrella Academy S2 and ugh how did this get renewed (even a S3) beyond one season I do not get.

On the KDrama front Alchemy of Souls and Extraordinary Attorney Woo (Eun-bin Park is good) are good still dropping episodes. Cafe Minamdang is kinda funny. Almost finished She Would Never know which is basic drama/romance fare that in that genre segment is OK there are better ones. My Liberation Notes was also solid though kinda depressing at times I would stall out o it still have the last episode to finish.

Did you like The Watchmen, but what it to be more about present-day society and equipped with extra doses of cynicism and gore? Then The Boys is for you. It's the sharpest and smartest satire on TV today while also being over-the-top indulgent in terms of violence, gore, and cheap jokes. It's simultaneously high and low brow. It likes to have its cake and eat it, too. It's what James Gunn had hoped he was doing with The Suicide Squad (2021), but executed far better. If you want a superhero show about how sick of superhero culture you are, this is the show for you.

I think Disney has a pretty clear idea of what they're doing with Star Wars at this point. Pumping out as many TV shows about grizzled, fan favorites babysitting marketable children around the galaxy as possible. After the success of The Mandalorian we've had Bad Batch and now Obi Wan, with Jude Law set to star in Skeleton Crew in 2023 (which features him escorting a bunch of children).

And yet somehow we still keep watching them all, because, well, its Star Wars something or another. We'll grump about the low quality writing, but we'll still watch them all. George Lucas, now Disney, are just a couple drug dealers!

This HAS to be great right?
I feel better about the show now than I did. That huge EW piece that really went into details on the show and the other failed one was interesting. Cast interviews were great also.

Looking forward to both this and the LoTR series. WoT series looks like it already got renewed for a 3rd seasons and the 2nd season has not hit yet.

Probably the main two intriguing histories on that world is the time the show is in and for me the doom of valaria. Interesting they did say the civil war part could last for 3 or 4 seasons but then subsequent seasons might be more stand alone jump ahead or back in time.

That said I really don't like prequels especially when the history/canon is known. And it always feel a bit cowardly from the creative sense especially after a popular movie/series. I sequels I just find more appealing though sure sometimes there is no room to maneuver. The potential Jon Snow series intrigues me a lot more.

Agreed. I don't understand the love for prequels in general. I'd be much more interested in a show set 200 years in the future from the end of GoT than 200 years in the past. When the inevitable GoT references pop up, I'd prefer a show where those things tell us something about how the world eventually turned out, whereas in the past every nod to the original show will just remind us that we know how it all ends up.

I'll still watch it, but setting it in the past is narratively confining.

Exactly all the big events you already know who wins and who dies etc.. Now I get the rightful backlash after the last season as well as likely cast burnout they did not consider anything after the series but creative it gives the most room at this point. Several of the GoT cast expressed interest in revisiting their characters. Would love to see some Jon Snow and Arya adventures.

Skip Thor - Love/Thunder

It's terri-bad. Recycled material, recycled scenes, lazy acting, lazy writing.

Watch Thor Love & Thunder

It's a Taika Waititi film and feels like a Taika Waititi film, which instantly means it has more personality than 80% of MCU films

I've been lurking since the Hanlon days, but I don't write often. I just don't have time to do it, and often, don't have that much to say. I enjoy reading folks' opinions, though.

RE: being a management apologist .... After 2017, the second straight loss to the Pens, I was like "we gotta make a change, this isn't working." I advocated trading Ovechkin. (not on this board, just with friends)

Then, after largely standing pat, we win the cup.

I'm certainly critical of some moves (signing Hagelin, for example) ... but by and large, I've come to terms that I really don't know what the fck I'm talking about. Following a sport should be fun, no point in getting overly worked up about things I have no control of.
Just responding to say, your avatar is incredible. Love Ralph Bakshi and LotR.
