There’s a lot of variables in play still but If the 2nd opens up space to be able to grab a Dman on waivers that fills a need currently & with potential to play games over the next couple seasons, than it’s more valuable than the lottery ticket of a 2nd.

Especially when you consider this Franchise’s drafting.
This is 2nd Round picks in the last 20 yrs:

Denis Grot, Marc Andre Bernier, Mason Raymond, Taylor Ellington, Yann Sauve, Anton Rodin, Alex Mallet, Thatcher Demko, Kole Lind, Jonah Gadjovich, Jett Woo, Nils Hoglander, Danila Klimovich

But that’s just how I look at it. You don’t have to agree with me lol.
Lol
And i take optimism to how many 3rd and 4th round picks contributed to cup winning teams over the last several years

Edit: i am being sincere

It’s amazing what good drafting franchises can do. I wish we had a scouting staff like Tampa that can pull someone like anthony cirelli from the 3rd round… but we don’t.

I don't think it's that they are better at drafting which always has alot of luck involved, but they are far superior at developing their talent. They always seem to have a Mathieu Joseph, Anthony Cirelli, or Ross Colton that they develop in the AHL and fill out their team with. This has been a major organizational weakness since we lost the Moose over a decade ago.

Not happy to give up the pick but at least it’s 2024 so they have time to maybe recover it. But happy that Dickinson is gone. I was hoping he’d at least come into camp with a raised game to maybe allow the Canucks to save that pick. Alas, he didn’t.

They do get some further organizational depth on the blueline which is also good.

That's my hope...as players like Hoglander solidify, and maybe players like Klimovich and Rathbone mature, I'd hope that they'd be able to start offloading the likes of Pearson and Myers/Dermott as they get pushed out by younger players, and if the right circumstances develop then hopefully we can recoup picks.

Not likely but I sure hope so

Happy to see new mgmt slowly getting rid of some bad contracts from the JB regime. It will be a slow and painful process to right the ship.

Now onto Pearson and Poolman. Myers is a bad contract but they are so weak on D that they'll probably keep him unless they're out of the playoffs before the deadline.

From all reports Stillman is tough as nails, but a zone possession nightmare. His underlying analytics are "Gudbranson bad'.

But of course it's hard for any d-man in Chicago to look good. So maybe he's stuck out there with bad matchups.

But I don't think the Canucks are done tinkering with their blueline.....Allvin hinted as much as the press conference.

3/12 is actually pretty good. That's why you want more picks to improve your odds....
Eh 25% isnt too great, wasnt it like 40% play 100+ games? But yes top 3 rounds you want as many picks as possible always

I like this trade though, halves the cap hit and gives us some muscle on our weak defense other than Schenn and sometimes Myers

Since 2000, the Canucks have traded 12 of their 2nd round draft picks away up to year 2024.

corey schwab

dan cloutier (we added the pick to adrian aucoin)

johan hedberg

mika noronen

bryan smolinski rental

steve bernier

[traded down for a 2011 3rd and 4th]

derek roy rental

sven baertschi

erik gudbranson (added the pick to jared mccann)

toffoli rental + schaller contract dump (packaged with tyler madden)

OEL + garland + beagle/roussel/eriksson contract dumps (packaged with the #9 pick)

dickinson contract dump

funny how the first four were adding bodies to the goalie graveyard while the last three have been (at least partially) to buy contract dumps

Do the same thing with Dermott as we did with Schmidt. Get the same pick back, since management found a better player available later on.

Don't forget Linden Vey for a 2014 2nd rounder.

To be fair, Cloutier was worth the 2nd.

cloutier worth the 2nd, debatable. cloutier worth the 2nd and adrian aucoin? i don't see how that's justifiabble.

the linden vey 2nd was the pick they'd just gotten for jason garrison

a couple other 2nd rounders that weren't our normal pick: we apparently got a compensatory 2nd in 2001 and traded it for another goalie, alex auld.

and also, we got a 2nd, along with a 3rd and felix potvin, from the islanders for dave scatchard, kevin weekes, and bill muckalt. we later traded that 2nd for... me

Rumor has it that if you say Benning in front of the mirror 5 times, he will appear and give you a 2nd round pick.
This is Benning after trading for OEL:
