yes geez a lot of angling for negativity. Lets give the guy some time. He's just getting his timing and doesn't even have his line mates or regular defense that he will gel with to do what he does best

I liked this pick up and Dallas fans were upset to lose him. He was really good on their romp to the finals.
Calgary was icing their NHL defence minus Hanifin. Jason Dickinson controls the middle of the ice and allows his wingers to focus on offence. When he's strapped with Di Giuseppe and MacEwen of course that line isn't generating much offence. He's the best player on that line.

I don't dislike the player. He's a solid low-event bottom-6 winger. Where I had issues was with the people - and there were a f***ing lot of them - trying to hype this player who they had probably never heard of before as some sort of elite #3 defensive C based on some flawed analytics, when he had barely played as a #3C in his entire career. And when Travis Green was highly unlikely to use him in that role given how bad he is at faceoffs.
He's been fine on face-offs so far. Pettersson is the fake centre, not Dickinson. The guy was playing with Cogliano and Comeau or in a top 6 winger role. That's a 3rd line centre, carrying poor wingers.

Hopefully his numbers go up as the talent on his wings is the best he's ever had in his career.

He played C up and down the Stars lineup a fair bit last season...

Looking at the TOI numbers, he spent about 60% of his time on the wing and 40% as the #4C (Faksa is pretty locked in as the #3C there). He has barely played as a #3C, and it doesn't look like Green envisions him in that role either.

Generally Pavelski was their #1C, Hintz or Benn was the #2C with the other of those two playing the wing, Faksa was the #3C.

Dickenson actually played a surprising amount in what would be considered top-6 minutes next to Benn and Pavelski.

You only have to go to the Dallas GDT's to see where he played last season...Their PBP guy lists who was on what line that night. .Looks to me like he played a significant time at C (not necessarily at 3C, but 1,2,3 and 4 C) ..I think your %'s are off..I will check again.

His faceoff #s are very low and his TOIs with linemates have been presented here many pages back.

He played a huge chunk of time with Benn or Pavelski and wasn't playing C with those guys.

Faksa is their #3C who is the team's faceoffs leader and plays the high-leverage defensive minutes with huge D-zone starts. He's about the most locked-in, stereotypical #3C in the NHL in terms of usage.

Yep. Dickinson was more a utility guy than 3C at Dallas. Maybe he will show that we *can* develop him into a full-time 3C, maybe not, but for now, it's not a must to play him there just because we wish him to be good there.

During Dallas' Cup run, Dickinson was less than 2 whole minutes away from having logged the 3rd most 5 v 5 time among Stars' forwards. Last year he spent a lot of top as a top 6 winger. So if Dickinson was more of a utility guy he was a very important utility guy.

His EV defense is considered very good. I think it depends on what you're looking for. I see no reason why Dickinson can't play 3C and be above average defensively. What he can bring offensively is the real question mark.

Did I imply he was not an important utility guy? ;)

So then who will play 3c if not Dick? If it's Miller, who is taking faceoffs for Petey? Or did Petey become elite at faceoffs during the offseason? So many questions

We'll see how Green plays it but something I pointed out before is that while we can have an effective top 9 rolling Pettersson/Horvat/Miller down the middle that probably only works when the forwards are at full strength. I would guess you see Dickinson at 3C when the team starts taking some injuries, which could end up being most of the season.

This guy is a pretty vanilla/safe player, I think you can find those types at lesser cap hits with some good pro scouting and/or by having a deeper prospect pool, sadly the Canucks fall flat on their face in both areas. He's not going to be an albatross contract by any means, but I feel like it's another one of those small overpays that end up adding up, especially when you do have albatross contracts like OEL/Myers and other overpays like Pearson already to deal with.

I just really dislike the idea of having a "checking" 3rd line that struggles to produce offense when most successful teams are building 3 lines that can provide 5v5 offense. This guy couldn't put up numbers playing with the likes of Jamie Benn, Joe Pavelski and Denis Gurianov so I don't envision him suddenly doing better on the Canucks 3rd line.

Definitely agree with this.........will be interesting to see what happens with Miller here. Having him down the middle is probably the easiest way to address this I suppose.

Successul teams are building 3 lines that can provide 5v5 offense. Let's look at Washington who won with Eller as their 3rd line C or Blues with Bozak.

I don't understand how you are writing off Dickinson as if he's a Sutter or Beagle.

As I mentioned, he played with the likes of Benn, Pavelski and Gurianov and produced underwhelming offensive numbers. He’s not getting better linemates than that in Vancouver.

I do hope he does end up becoming a shutdown center though. But Green will have to live with his subpar faceoff ability

Dickinson is the same age as Sutter was when he was acquired by the Canucks, and has like 2/3 as many career points as Sutter did goals at the time, and like 1/3 the career points?

Pettersson, Boeser, Horvat, Miller won’t be better than Pavelski or Benn? At this point in their career, our guys are better. It’s close but Dallas forwards are much older than Vancouver’s.

What?

I’m talking about Dickinson’s 3rd line linemates lol

I don’t believe the Canucks can ice three scoring lines with him as 3C. Especially since they probably want to keep Pettersson happy by giving him two good wingers

I don’t see Dockinson getting better linemates(keyword) than he did last year

How many points do you think Dickinson puts up this year if he plays all 82 as the 3C?

I would have a better idea if I saw him play as a Canuck in a competitive game. Maybe end of pre-season so I can see potential linemates. He's good for 15-20 goals though I bet by end of 82 games.

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

I'll be very happy if he gets his usual 15-20 pts while providing good defence. He won't score 15-20 goals even if he gets PP1 time. He has 0 offence in his game.

I guess facts and logic go out the window when Jimbo's moves need to look good. :D

Uhhhhhhh ....

Dickinson has averaged 9.84 goals/season in his 3 years as an NHL regular.

He's going to get zero PP time so you're projecting 15-20 ES goals for him from bottom-6 minutes. As a point of comparison, Bo Horvat has averaged 14 ES goals/82 GP over his career. JT Miller has scored at an 18 ESG/82 GP pace as a Vancouver Canuck.

Last year, Brock Boeser easily led the team by scoring at a 20 ESG/82 GP pace.
