hey guys can i sheepishly admit that this whole time i was confused af about all the arguments about jason dickinson and how good he is defensively and whether he can produce any offence or if he plays center because i was thinking of jason robertson and mostly just wondering how he made it to UFA so fast.

Another piece was up by the Province the other day. Describes him as a Center and intended to be pivoting the third line.

On mobile or I’d link.

Well Dickinson is nine years younger than Jay Beagle and is earning $400,000 less a season.

So if he can surpass Beagle's expected goals-total of approximately five per season, then the Canucks are already way ahead in the game.

He was on 650 the other day and said he preferred playing C for what it’s worth.

As expected so far. A checker that wins faceoffs. Zero offensive skill. Traded a draft pick and gave a term deal as per usual.

Dickinson can't win a faceoff. He's ideal for the wing position. Which is why we keep seeing Jt. Miller at C in both preseason games and practice rushes. Once we have Petey and Horvat together Jt. will remain as C. Dickinson will play in the top 9 as the defensive part of a line. (like Pearson).

For sure.

Which makes his cap hit for a no-offense bottom-6 winger ... not great.

Wait...our recently acquired shutdown 3rd line centre has a career 44.3FA%? That's a little off-putting.

They had no plans of playing him at C
They had JT. Miller pegged to play C once the season was over watching the playoffs and how team would run three scoring lines. Im pretty certain that this was also part of the reason why they went after Garland. They needed another top 6 player if they swing Jt. Miller down to the 3rd line.
Big, defensive winger was targeted and Dickinson filled the role. He'll do for Jt. Miller (or maybe even Petey?) what Pearson does for Horvat but with less scoring and better defensive awareness.

i'm not that upset with it.
He is legit very good in his own zone. I remember looking at advanced analytics and he literally prevents goals when on the ice relative to his team-mates. He has a noticeable impact. He's also got size and not too old. maybe he's 500k -700k over-priced but ... meh.. you dont know what other teams had offered him. At the end of the day, what the Canucks paid is the definition of market price. Unless they were the only bidder and set some sort of ugly precedent. I don't think that's the case here.

so far, don't understand this signing. Dickinson shows very little of anything aside from being a bit taller. Doesn't look overly physical. I mean if you are going to overpay for a bot 6 player, he better bring something more to the table.

The analytics have a ton of noise in them. Everyone on Dallas had great numbers. The same analytics say that 37 y/o Joe Pavelski suddenly became the best defensive forward in the NHL and that mediocre journeyman like Comeau and Cogliano were some of the best defensive forwards in the NHL.

We've gone through the comparables that show he was paid way over market, and that was assuming he played C. It's even worse when he's playing wing.

There's barely been any hockey played how are people so sure about their opinion?
yes geez a lot of angling for negativity. Lets give the guy some time. He's just getting his timing and doesn't even have his line mates or regular defense that he will gel with to do what he does best

I liked this pick up and Dallas fans were upset to lose him. He was really good on their romp to the finals.

I don't dislike the player. He's a solid low-event bottom-6 winger. Where I had issues was with the people - and there were a f***ing lot of them - trying to hype this player who they had probably never heard of before as some sort of elite #3 defensive C based on some flawed analytics, when he had barely played as a #3C in his entire career. And when Travis Green was highly unlikely to use him in that role given how bad he is at faceoffs.
