Bonus-heavy contract, with bonuses being paid on September 1 which makes this a tougher contract to move. Benning just f***ed this team for the next half decade.

"experience, character, and size" is not how you talk about a defenceman who is paid Top 30 in the league and better be a god damned top pair guy. Usually you talk about how they are actually talented or good.

Absolutely awful

Yup.

Lists 4 things about Myers and none of them are about how well he actually plays hockey.

Oh, I get it, you guys wanted the Canucks to sign the reincarnation of Scott Steven's . Give your heads a shake, we got a good player that improves what we had last year.
It wouldn't matter who Bennings signs, you would call for him to fired.

I don't think anyone that has realistic expectations is expecting Myers to be a top pairing guy. Why this constant need to apply expectations that are unrealistic, then bitch for years on end when those expectations aren't met?

Expectations come with the contract. I don't blame him for signing it, but if he does, he should expect to be held to the standard of a player who is the top-paid defenseman on the team (tied with Edler).

Because - shockingly - people might align their expectations for a player to his cap hit?

Ben Hutton did a solid job as a mid-pairing guy last year but apparently $4.4 million was way too much for him. When they pay Myers $6 million, what does that say about their expectations?

What sucks the most is the new GM next year actually has a huge mess to deal with. Tons of rotten contracts and no 2021 first round pick. This team is so ****ed. Pettersson and Horvat will not win a Stanley Cup in a Canucks uniform. That's what Benning has done today.

I question Pettersson signing long term in Van. Hes extremely competitive, smart and he wants to win. Think he will be patient with an ownership group that cant put a competent hockey operations dept together? I dont see him wanting to play for a management team that is anti-intellectual and incapable of putting a competitive team together. He wont sign long term in Vancouver with this regime.

We had a truly awful D last year so improving is no great accomplishment. Be careful shaking your head as the rattling could be deafening.

Great contract for the biggest D UFA. Don’t have to protect in Seattle expansion either. Well done Benning!!

All of these signings and trades it's like "safe work environment" "element of grit/size" "leadership" not like...."he's great at controlling possession and zone entries"

I agree, we should all just smile and watch the giraffe play on the slippy surface for 5 years and not have any expectations.

C'est la vie!
