I don't think anyone that has realistic expectations is expecting Myers to be a top pairing guy. Why this constant need to apply expectations that are unrealistic, then ***** for years on end when those expectations aren't met?

What is considered top pairing salary to you?

It’s easy to throw out a blanket criticism without a stated qualifier. Try grounding it in your expectations of what a top pairing salary is at the moment.

Only based on what people we're speculating. In isolation this is an awful move and Myers plays like a $3.5MM #4/5 d-man.

It seems like everything is graded on a curve now because people have such short attention spans. The Canucks put out a trial balloon weeks ago. They were signing Myers no matter what.

Hopefully this stupidity will come to end soon and Benning will finally be shown the door.

I like the signing. Allows depth in the system to force battles for jobs. It is either make the playoffs or look for work for Benning.

Hiding under WTG's bed...
This is what you said about the Gudbranson signing, rinse and repeat the same crap.

"3 years at $4 million

With no NMC or NTC.

Had it been 4 years it would have averaged out to about $3.65 million maybe $3.75 million.

With a lack of RHD on the current roster and in the organization this is far from a terrible signing

But I am sure that won't stop the histrionics and overly dramatic statements about how and why it's terrible that Benning couldn't even throw him out the door for a measly 3rd.

I applaud this signing because it's actually not bad."

The details on Cap Friendly are very strange. Total salary has a high of $9.5 million in years 2 and 4, and a low of $2 million in years 3 and 5. I am not an expert on the CBA but that doesn't seem legal. Hopefully this is just an error on the source's part but it would be hilarious if the NHL rejected the contract.

I can't believe the reported bonus structure is correct so we'll have to wait and see what it really is, but a front loaded contract with bonuses should make it easier to trade Myers in the last couple of years, not harder. On the other hand, if he's an untradeable bum by year 4, buying him out won't save much cap.

EDIT: Cap Friendly fixed it. Last bonus is due in year 5. Following that payment, Myers will be owed $2 million for his last year.

Be a nice change from you guys crying over every non issue

How are these non issues?

The moves we have all decried over the past 5 years have absolutely come around to bite us in the ass and limit our ability to build any semblance of a good team, so this is not a non-issue—this will hurt us long term, just like 90% of the moves Jim Benning has made.

The "sit back and enjoy" take is such an apathetic cop out.

I dunno, some of us would like to watch a really good team again one day? Maybe it's actually good to have standards and call out bumbling incompetence?

Like this guy. Clearly if he isn't at minimum a rh Edler, this guy will be complaining, irregardless of how Myers actually performs in a role that's not top pairing. Can't wait, bub!

Just a wonderfully condescending post.

There's degrees of a bad deal. If Myers somehow becomes a consistent top-four guy here who can shoulder the minutes Green is going to force feed him, then I will have no issues at all even if he may be overpaid as a #4. However, nothing in his recent history, or the data surrounding aging defensman dependant on their athletic ability, suggests that he is going to magically get better as he enters his 30s.

But I know that regardless of how Myers actually performs in the role he's given, you'll find a way to justify it to defend Benning. And with his terrific track record in signing and trading for free agents, who could blame you?

We were told the same things in the Sutter trade thread, the same things in the Eriksson signing thread and the same things in the Gudbranson trade thread.

We were right about all of them.

It’s actually incredible how all the usual suspects tell us how great Benning’s offseason moves are every single summer, get proven totally wrong, and seem to completely forget and the next year are right back cheerleading the new moves and thumbing their noses at those of us who are consistently right for being too negative.

The takes these people have on Myers are basically identical to their previous takes on Eriksson, Gudbranson, Gagner, Beagle and on and on. You could almost just cut/paste the names.

Well I am technically in the "it could be worse" camp. I am simply glad Gudbranson and Pouliot are gone and we get to watch Hughes, Myers and Benn. Not the best group ever but infinitely better than what they had.

Yeah it's very much a "They thought the tumour was stage V but it turns out it's only stage IV", but that's been the new normal for the last several years. It's just so sad.

Happy to watch Hughes for sure, but you just have to question whether this management group has what it takes to surround the like 4 good young players we have with the right talent, at the right price, at the right time, to make this into not just a playoff team, but a stanley cup contender.

Oh, I am aware. I went back to all those threads last night. But I think you hit the nail on the head with you major point, every summer we got told how Benning had a fantastic summer and made the team better, but end up in the basement. I'll never understand how this fan base doesn't hold this regime accountable for anything. I don't understand how people are completely fine with constantly being on the wrong side of history.

Benning is then screwed. How could they make the Playoffs? Who would they knock out?

As others have undoubtedly pointed out, Myers by the end of the season was on the bottom pairing, and his most common partner was Dmitry Kulikov. He averaged only 15 minutes at ES in the playoffs. At 29 years old, he is a guy you might take a flyer on, for 1 or 2 years. Could be an okay buy-low gamble in the hope he had an off year instead of already being well on the downslope.

This contract is pretty much a buyout candidate from the moment it is signed, or it would be if not for the signing bonuses. If they get maybe two years where he’s maybe only overpaid by 2M, that’s probably a good result.

More likely he’s bottom-pairing now and AHL fodder by year 3. Hopefully it is some other GM’s problem.

Our depth down the middle is 2 great players an unknown in Gaudette, Sutter who is not worth his contract and Beagle a mediocre 33 year old 4th liner signed for 3 more years.

We also have Madden in our pipeline. Unknown yes, but also had a very impressive season last year. You are correct in what you’re saying, but you can’t just ignore prospects like Madden and disregard them as being listed as possible future assets.

Can we wait to name Demko the next big thing until he has played a season in the NHL Markstrom is sign for one more year, so no we are not good in for the future.

1) I never said that about Demko
2) Canucks will easily sign Markstrom if he’s the guy that they want to proceed forward with.
3) We also have Dipietro in the system.

Again - prospect pipelines are a thing. It’s ok to list them as “assets” if they’ve shown promise.

Having one top 6 LW (Miller) and then a bunch of 3rd liners s not being surprisingly deep.

Pearson is a 2nd line LW’er. Outside of his slow start in LA and lackluster stint in Pittsburgh, he’s been a 2nd line LW’er his whole career. He played very well with Horvat last year as well.

We also have Hoglander in our system. Many agree that this was an excellent pick up by us.

If and when Podzolkin comes the RW are probably fine, still only one top 6 RW this year, and by the way Pomminville sucks ass.

Virtanen is a good to decent 3rd line RW’er. Maybe not Pomminville per se, but maybe some other cheap vet that can be signed on a 1-2 year deal and have a reasonable shot at providing offense on a Pearson-Horvat line.

There is no doubt the asset management has been very poor.

Great contract for the biggest D UFA. Don’t have to protect in Seattle expansion either. Well done Benning!!

Yeah he's such a great contract and a good player but oh he's not important enough to be protected.

Another day another

"world is ending Benning is terrible" thread with zero substance but full of conjecture and stories

On HF

Carry on, I am off to see the other signings made today and question how the hell Benning did terribly compared to what other GMs have done *cough Bobs for $10 million*

What if I told you that there can be multiple bad contracts handed on in the league?

How are these non issues?

The Canucks don’t have to protect Myers in the expansion draft.

I haven’t read this thread, but am I correct in assuming that this hasn’t been mentioned much in this thread?

Ps - if it has, my apologies in advance.

Pps - if people haven’t really been talking about it, then “narratives” is the key word for today.
