Canucks & NHL News, Rumours, & Fantasy GM | Chaos Week

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Good thing that Mike knew what he was doing since he was going to trade Cory for the 9th overall only if Bo was still available.

The funniest thing is that Bo Horvat will be the best player we've drafted since 1999 with the exception of Quitt Hughes. Skinny had a higher peak but overall career and consistency will go to Horvat.

I'm 100% convinced that Gillis would have done much better than Jimbo with the 1st round picks and it's not like Benning killed it in the late rounds where his scouting skills should mattered the most. Demko was Jimbo's best hit considering where he was drafted but he was made of glass.
Gillis had two top-10 picks and made very reasonable, solid choices with them.

Jim Benning completely busted a 6th and 5th overall, and would have busted the Petey pick by taking Glass if he weren't overruled by Linden.

The Benning talent evaluator narrative was never true, and it's completely laughable people were trying to sell it when he was hired.

Your comment wasn't directed at me but I think that at the end of the day business is business and a bird in hand is better than nothing.

I think when a player says he wants to stay it could really mean that he wants to stay or he doesn't mind staying. Either way it comes with the caveat of "if the offer is right." Despite tampering rules, you can bet that agents know which teams might be interested in their client before free agency starts so when a player knows his options he starts weighing his options.

I am not sure what the team's thought process is with Bluegar. It's possible that Bluegar's asking price doesn't fit into what the team is trying to do. Chicago, for example, overpaid veterans in exchange for having shorter term on their contracts. Bluegar is going to be 32. If Bluegar can, I'm pretty sure he wants security that the Canucks might not be willing to give him. That or maybe management decided to move on from the player regardless. Without further moves, the team does have Petey, Rossi, Chytil, Raty, and Sasson down the middle with the possibility of Cootes being part of the conversation. Management might be comfortable with that group going into next season. Certainly if everyone is healthy (a big if) that's not a C group you worry about or can worry about.

But that's a given - no one is signing for a discount/pennies on the dollar, especially with the franchise in its current state. We should have ample cap space, and it shouldn't be an issue. Blueger's interest in re-signing in Vancouver was reported back in March. It's pretty clear the organization has moved on and probably sees Raty taking his minutes.

Trade Landscape
  • Teams were having their final draft meetings so trade discussions were, mostly, put on hold until later in the afternoon and evening
  • Not many good options in free agency so have to go the trade route
  • Teams want to be more aggressive
  • Maple Leafs have been very active over the last two days
Connor Hellebuyck
  • Has asked for a trade and the Jets are trying to convince him to stay
  • Hurricanes have made a trade offer for him
  • Panthers are also engaged in talks to acquire him
  • Wonders if the Sabres would consider trading the 4th overall pick; Jets would be interested in Caleb Malhotra at 4th
  • Doesn’t see a scenario where the Jets don’t ask for Anton Lundell but the Panthers have been adamant about not wanting to trade him
Buffalo Sabres
  • Are definitely looking to see what trade options are available to them; either at goaltending or replacing Alex Tuch; 4th overall is in play
  • Jack Quinn’s name is out there with the Sabres willing to trade him for an upgrade
Detroit Red Wings
  • Teams are asking about Alex Debrincat; sounds like he is asking a lot to extend
  • Goal is to have a Dylan Larkin trade done by the end of the draft weekend but will wait if they don’t get what they want for him
Vincent Trochek
  • Both parties want to have him traded
  • The ask is a 1st round pick and another good asset
  • Wild offered a 1st at the TDL and the Rangers turned them down because they felt they could get more in the offseason
  • Sabres, Canadiens, and Maple Leafs have checked in; Kings have expressed interest and there’s a degree of willingness on Trochek’s part to go there given his connections to the personnel there; his preference is to stay East
Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Zach Werenski has not definitively asking for a trade but wants a guarantee that they will compete soon
  • Blue Jackets don’t want to trade Werenski and will talk to him after the draft
  • Also having extension conversations with Kirill Marchenko; money isn’t the issue
  • Canadiens are one of the teams with serious interest in Marchenko
  • Need to re-sign Adam Fantilli
Ottawa Senators
  • Adding a right-shot defenceman is a priority for them
  • Also want to add another winger
  • Need to figure out if they can extend Drake Batherson
Vancouver Canucks
  • Can see the Canucks taking Caleb Malhotra if they move down and are unlikely to move out of the top-10 (Gaffar)
  • Doesn’t think they are willing to retain beyond 2m in salary on Elias Pettersson (Gaffar)
  • DeBrusk is probably the best left winger that’s available (Gaffar)
  • There is motivation to trade him and it’s no secret he wants out; wants to be on a contender but has a willingness to be loose with his NMC (Pagnotta)
  • Kraken are looking to add but are probably not at the top of DeBrusk’s destinations (Pagnotta)
  • Might be able to get a late-1st round pick for DeBrusk; has a very attractive contract (Pagnotta)
  • Feels that the Canucks also want Hronek around for the rebuild but he is one of the most attractive trade pieces (Gaffar)
  • Every indication is that Hronek is not interested in waiving his NMC (Pagnotta)
  • As of yesterday, haven’t had a formal offer for any of their players; expects that to increase by the draft; does know they want to make a “splash”, which would be trading a big name player; (Gaffar)
  • Has heard that Marcus Pettersson’s name is out there a little bit (Gaffar)
  • Are willing to listen on anyone (Pagnotta)
  • Doesn’t think Marcus Pettersson is willing to waive his NMC right now (Pagnotta)
  • There are teams that are interested in Elias Pettersson; his understanding is that teams are willing to offer a certain amount for the player and then ask the Canucks what else they need for retention (Pagnotta)
  • Elias Pettersson hasn’t asked for a trade; thinks he loves it in Vancouver (Gaffar)
Jason Robertson
  • The threat of offer sheets are real
  • The Sabres have talked about him but don’t want to meet his contract demands
  • Kraken and Red Wings would be interested in him
  • Next contract sounds like 14m to 15m AAV
  • Penguins would love to acquire him and have talked to the Stars about him
Brandon Carlo
  • A lot of talk around him on Wednesday; was surprised nothing happened
  • Sabres have reached out
Rasmus Ristolainen
  • A lot of smoke around him
Who Goes Where in the Draft
  • Every indication is that Gavin McKenna is going 1st overall; some teams felt that message was relayed to McKenna
  • Believes the Sharks have pivoted to taking Ivar Stenberg, at 2nd overall, after trading William Eklund; the Canucks and Rangers would love to draft Stenberg
  • A couple of people from the Sharks were in Sweden last week
  • Lots of teams really like Chase Reid, including the Maple Leafs
Matthew Knies
  • Would be very surprised if they traded him

If EP loves it in Van, what would it be like if he hated playing somewhere?

Jump ship? Wtf is this?
Dude is 33 years old and has one chance left to win the cup. He wasted his prime with the Jets? Jets are not and won't be a good team. Mediocre land is where they'll be and where the've been in the last 5 years: 2 playoff misses, 2 1st round exits and 1 2nd round exit. LA Kings had more success than the Jets in the last 5 years and they are the defition of mediocre.
Its Bs is what it is. At some point any well off person doesn't want to live in Winnipeg. Some of us sooner than others
