Canucks & NHL News, Rumours, & Fantasy GM | Chaos Week

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
I find it amusing when people take anything that players, managers, or coaches say at face value. None of it matters, particularly weeks later after this player has had time to reflect.

And of course his agent (which is who Dhaliwal likely spoke with) wouldn't close any door. What if his client is left without a dance partner in early August?

I'm open to the possibility that he wants to re-sign and the Canucks aren't doing it.
Are you open to the possibility that he's changed his mind?

Gotta say, I'm impressed by the rambling over really nothing + the mental gymnastics at play here. The player has essentially outright said he's interested in staying without giving the classic non-committal answer almost all hockey players give in this situation, the top local reporter has reported he's interested in re-signing in Vancouver, and yet we're acting like it really means nothing because of a 'hunch' that the player changed his mind/his agent is secretly playing 4D chess.

There is very little chance his client will be 'left without a dance partner in early August'. He's a reliable bottom 6 center capable of holding his own in tough minutes while producing at a respectable rate (0.49 PPG this season, 0.39 PPG across his tenure as a Canuck).

There's also been reporting that it's the organization that's changed it's mind with the change of regime - I really don't know what you're rambling on about when it's all moot point when it's obvious the team won't be bringing him back.

Twice you've used rambling. Check the word counts. One of us has typed a couple paragraphs of relatively inocuous content. The other has typed far more and seems weirdly triggered at the idea that a player might change his mind.

But you do you.

Because it's all pointless when the organization has indicated they don't have real interest in bringing the player back. You seem hell bent on going in circles over nothing - it makes 0 difference if the player has changed his mind or not when it couldn't be anymore obvious that it's the organization that has changed it's mind on bringing him back after the regime change.

Recap of Irfaan Gaffar's interview segment.

Trade Landscape
  • Thinks by training camp that Zach Werenski, Connor Hellebuyck, and Dylan Larkin will all be on different teams; Hellebuyck and Werenski will be traded within a month
  • First heard that Hellebuyck asked for a trade around game 3 or 4 of the SCF
  • Only reason Larkin will take longer to trade is because Yzerman will get what he wants for him
Americans Leaving Canada
  • Wonders if GMs get away from giving out NTCs and opt for higher salaries
  • Thinks there will be conversations about the way NTCs and how they are used in the future, between the NHL and NHLPA
Trading Down From 3rd Overall
  • Can’t see the Canucks moving out of the top-10
Caleb Malhotra
  • Thinks they would be willing to take him further down in the draft but not at 3rd
  • There are other prospects that they’ve looked at for 3rd overall; doesn’t think a decision has been made on who to take
  • Doesn’t see any awkwardness if they take him but would always be a presence
  • Not a slam dunk at 3rd overall
First Round Picks In Play
  • Getting traded because it’s a weak free agent class and this draft isn’t seen as very strong
  • 2027 draft is considered a lot deeper
  • Doesn’t think GMs are excited about the 2026 draft
Canucks Are Attempting to Trade
  • Jake DeBrusk is the best LW on the market that we know is available
  • If a team had offered a 1st for DeBrusk, the trade would have been made
  • No formal trade offer for any of the Canucks players
  • Do want to improve the team and make a splash
  • Wonders if someone makes a crazy offer for Hronek; most valuable asset
  • If someone offered something they really liked for Elias Pettersson, they would be willing to retain; may not be willing to go as high as 2m
  • Isn’t entirely sure if Boeser would accept a trade to a Canadian team
  • Teams aren’t lining up for DeBrusk
  • Hronek’s trade value doesn’t decrease significantly over the next couple of years

Irf definitely has some connections with the Canucks but interesting how much cold water was thrown on Malhotra to Canucks at 3.

So hellebuyck another one of them that jumps ship when things get rough? Just one year? Damn that was fast. Absolute garbage players. Winnipeg also a team Thats been very good for the last 7 years.

Damn. How many guys have we hired who have literally saved a life?

He's got a good player photo:

The guy was an absolute sieve in the playoffs but turned it on to have one of the best performances in the olympics. It's hilarious because he was absolutely the problem in the playoffs the past few season.

Remember when many on this board were livid that we passed on Nuke and took a 3C in Bo Horvat?
Good thing that Mike knew what he was doing since he was going to trade Cory for the 9th overall only if Bo was still available.

The funniest thing is that Bo Horvat will be the best player we've drafted since 1999 with the exception of Quitt Hughes. Skinny had a higher peak but overall career and consistency will go to Horvat.

I'm 100% convinced that Gillis would have done much better than Jimbo with the 1st round picks and it's not like Benning killed it in the late rounds where his scouting skills should mattered the most. Demko was Jimbo's best hit considering where he was drafted but he was made of glass.

Your comment wasn't directed at me but I think that at the end of the day business is business and a bird in hand is better than nothing.

I think when a player says he wants to stay it could really mean that he wants to stay or he doesn't mind staying. Either way it comes with the caveat of "if the offer is right." Despite tampering rules, you can bet that agents know which teams might be interested in their client before free agency starts so when a player knows his options he starts weighing his options.

I am not sure what the team's thought process is with Bluegar. It's possible that Bluegar's asking price doesn't fit into what the team is trying to do. Chicago, for example, overpaid veterans in exchange for having shorter term on their contracts. Bluegar is going to be 32. If Bluegar can, I'm pretty sure he wants security that the Canucks might not be willing to give him. That or maybe management decided to move on from the player regardless. Without further moves, the team does have Petey, Rossi, Chytil, Raty, and Sasson down the middle with the possibility of Cootes being part of the conversation. Management might be comfortable with that group going into next season. Certainly if everyone is healthy (a big if) that's not a C group you worry about or can worry about.
