Benning level of stupidity right now. What the f*** are these guys thinking - how do they make the wrong PR moves this often.
1. I don't think they really have any real PR staffers. JR just does whatever he wants, leaks whatever he wants, says whatever he wants. And he's a crotchety old man so thinks he's entitled to do whatever he wants.

2. This is just who they are. The Allvin-JR regime has really only had one season where they weren't constantly wrapped up in controversy and dysfunction (Doerrie issue, Boudreau ragdolling, Pearson injury eff-up, jerking Horvat around) . This is just a return to form.

He seemed to be well-spoken in 2022. He said all the right things and seemed to intend he was building a competent front office. They mostly had everything under control in the first few months and the moves they made weren't telegraphed.

The first cracks in the armour seemed to develop with the handling of Bruce Boudreau. It was handled so poorly. Then we heard leaks surrounding the Pettersson negotiations where the front office was openly leaking out rumors to the media. This season has totally jumped the shark though.

So there's two potential reasons:
1) JR is senile. Allvin is dumb as hell.

2) Aquilini has stonewalled many prior efforts at making changes/trades and this is basically Jim Rutherford/Allvin trying to ignite fireworks to get the public behind making those moves.
I think JR is senile and delusional. He's old. His mental faculties are just not going to be there. But I'll quote myself for expanded thoughts - this is just the normal modus operandi for this management group.

That is roughly what it sounds like. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Canucks are okay with that return, for Miller specifically, all this time and the reason they can't get a trade done is because teams want retention, bad contracts, or draft pick protection.
I can see if the Rangers continue to win and get closer to a playoff spot, the protection becomes a little less of a problem. Teams talk for weeks about players, we all know that. This could go on for another week or two. FFS.

Remarkable how Rutherford and Allvin went from a great year of shrewd decisions and improvements to the team, making the right choices to pay to get rid of guys, to scoop up available players who could help, summing up in probably our best chance at the cup for this era. And now because they cant manage interpersonal relations and what gets to the media they are costing us our two elite centres for pennies on the dollar. And he walks it out in his own interview blaming the players, when this whole trainwreck is because they f***ed up the defense this summer and the team is playing like ass because of it.

Time for Jim to resign.

Ive looked at different line up options for if we move both JT and EP and even if we got Cozens back it is hideous. Count in that we also lose Brock, we are basically put into a rebuild. So say goodbye to Quinn when his deal is up.

I really don't like to use Benning as some sort of boogeyman. To me, it diminishes the years of massive incompetence and total organizational dysfunction that was unique to his and Weisbrod's megalomania.

This is a different kind of incompetence and dysfunction.

This seems more driven by arrogance than anything else ... also I have a hard time not thinking Aquilini is lurking in the background here (despite the constant insistence he's "hands off" with Rutherford) ... this stinks of his type of petty reactivity.

Why would he have to state any of this publicly?

Does he know he can… just tell the other GM on the phone what he’s open to in terms of return?

He absolutely destroyed any leverage he possibly had.

He could’ve easily told other GM’s “we just won two straight, we might just play out this season and see where it gets us since the offers are not enticing enough.”

This is a Benning level blunder by Rutherford.
Meh...i don't believe he's lost any leverage by giving the interview. Both players are under contract and playing for the Canucks, nobody is holding out, it doesn't appear that any demands have been made...he simply made clear what everyone and their dog already knew. He can still play out the season, there is no real urgency to make a bad deal for them if the players don't have an urgency to leave...they've been playing together all this time and can keep playing together, until they can't...thats when it becomes a blunder.

JR takes for granted that the players he thinks will stay (Hughes, etc) won’t have an issue with his terrible PR moves.

This should rightly piss of Hughes, after he’s essentially put the team on his back to get them towards the post season. Now he has to keep talking about rifts in the locker room, after he already said his piece on it time after time
The article today says management has talked to Quinn, JR says he won’t stay for a rebuild, so they’ll try to retool. Assets they get back can and will be used towards those means.

That probably means either:

Assets from Miller trade will be used as currency to target and even overpay for players they like. Even if the initial return is disappointing.

Or Pete is used to get back a higher return and potentially younger prospects and change the makeup of the roster and room.

As an aside, I don’t really see Aqua interference as much as they don’t see a rebuild tenable with Quinn here. JR said they want to see Quinn as a life long Canuck.

Good read on those comments. In terms of timing, it's hard not to conclude this means a trade is very close.
Then make the damn trade. Why is JR just causing more drama? Tulsky didn't need to drip-drip the Necas-Rantanen deal for months. He just made the damn deal.

This is purely JR doing his usual BS of (attempted) narrative management by leaking through the media and giving interviews to uncritical reporters. It was his MO in Pittsburgh too. He's a loser that's trying to cover his own ass.

They need to turf JR, immediately. Before he just randomly quits, like he did in Pittsburgh.

JR is a senile, selfish old fool. He should be axed immediately.

I think the Canucks, in an ideal world, would like to keep one and move one.

But I wonder if they’re so mad at both players for letting it get to this and, really, potentially derailing a season filled with promise, that they want to move on from both?

Trade Pettersson now and trade Miller in the off-season. Totally guessing but I think that might end up being the plan. Lots of indication that Miller would be a better commodity in the summer when teams are more willing to reshape their roster while Pettersson has no say over where he goes now.

But this whole situation is a total gong show.

that interview from Rutherford is simply to cover his butt, so that they can deflect blame on a low return.

At the end of the day, both Miller/Petey contracts were given by this management. You offered long term contracts to 2 of your best players who have conflicts (from whats reported going back years), its on you.

And how much of this is because of the defense? how much of this is pro scouting failing on calls like acquiring Lindholm (wasting assets) and then targeting another complimentary winger in Debrusk to play with Petey?

If they trade Petey, wouldn't surprise me with the right linemates hes back to 90+ points and selke level defense.

The whole situation is taxing.

Up and down like a yoyo.

Feels more like an episode of the Kardashians than a professional hockey team.

Or maybe Game of Thrones is a better reference. Feeling a Red Wedding episode incoming.
Agreed. But rather than letting the show die off, JR unilaterally decided to make another episode and emphasize the cliffhanger.

I don’t see the big deal. Everyone already knows there’s a rift. Rutherford’s interview doesn’t really change his negotiating power at all imo.

"Hey guys, I know it's highly likely I have a higher hand than all of you but yeah, I have an Ace and a Queen...see for yourself! Now, who wants to go all-in?"

Really makes you start to wonder what happened in that locker room that the situation has got to this point. When you look at things in their entirety, going from both players willingly committing long term to the team knowing they would be teammates for near a decade to this untenable rift.

Also, anyone trying to imagine up problems between Rutherford and Allvin or either/both and Tocchet i think are out to lunch.

Listening to the D&D Mason interview I don't see anyway that this doesn't end with both JT and EP out the door. Certainly looks like they were given every opportunity to work things out for the good of the team and failed badly. Having one guy "win" by staying has to cause continuing problems in the room.
