Debrusk delivers that for significantly less and has had a consistently good two-way profile through his career. I like Brock but his game does not look like it will age well and even in his prime he was way too often a passenger.

Boeser just doesn't move the needle enough to be worth a premium.

DeBrusk also signed that deal before anyone knew how much the cap would be jumping. The original expectation was 92M and possibly 95M the following year. Now we're looking at 95.5M and 100M. That's going to make the price jump quite a bit.

Regardless, who in the off season replaces Boeser? Ehlers will demand the same 8M+ salary, and we're in no position to big game hunt on someone like Marner if he even wants to sign here.

ah the good ol' intangibles come out to play. As far as I can remember Pearson never played on an energy line because he's always had below average speed. Like if you said "have them both go into a corner and see who comes out with the puck" I could perhaps see your point.

I like Pearson but he's also had a more limited skillset than DeBrusk has.
yes that would be my point. pearson is or was better at board work, useful hitting and generally disrupting. both are middle six players. debrusk becomes useless when not scoring, pearson still contributes.

i guess i'd agree that debrusk is a faster skater and has a more accurate shot. at the same age i think they were very comparable on reaction time, puck handling and dangling. pearson had a hard shot with la that he used to get off a lot but it also missed the net a lot.

We should absolutely go for both those players if they want to sign here. Ehlers is a much more effective player than Boeser at this stage in their careers.

As for Marner, we have about $12m of cap space if we let Boeser walk. More if we trade Demko. Even more if we trade Hoglander. It would seriously restrict the Canucks' ability to make other moves but Marner has the kind of talent you sign first and then worry about the rest later.

I'm convinced Vector is AI.

Oh shut up, crazy people will actually believe you, you know. ;)

If they need to be dealt then IMO do a rebuild but not all the vets at once.
Myers would be kept.
Hronek is under contract
Hughes another year then seriously consider a trade while he has one more year left as added value.
Garland could be around for another season

Deal BB, EP and JTM for futures then think about the TDL for some of the other vets.

A rebuild could be done in 2 years as far as getting the players, drafted and through trades.

I don't think Tocchet is the coach for younger players, his reputation isn't great in dealing with young players.
Quennville might be better by far.

Not the coach for younger players…in Vancouver. Maybe you’re right, but coaches are learning as well. Games different from when they played.

Sure but I'd still rather have DeBrusk at 7 for $6m than Boeser at 8 for $8m. That's a $42m liability vs a $64m one.

I think Marner could get more than 12M on open market now. If that was a possibility for us then we do it.

current canucks management have consistently missed the boat on extending veteran players when they were cheaper. horvat, hronek, lindholm, zadorov, and now boeser have all improved their bargaining positions relative to when they might have been signed.

i assume it's a philosophical issue. lots of teams get killed extending guys within their own roster.
i don't want to get into it in depth but this list is so flawed and lacks context man

Wild take as someone who's been pro debrusk's signing & pro not bringing back boeser

Vanouver made it's moves in the off season, not expecting I assume the storm that is now happening. I hope that all the stuff that has gone on is not blinding them, or stopping them from assement of all players. Moves are being made all around us within the division. Small ones like Sadd another jerkoff going to play for the Golden Jerk offs. Edmonton looking always to add any vet with skill and size.. they will hit sooner than later.. those types want to win.

Calagry now not only won, but can start to point and laugh at what Kuzmenko got them, and really for a UFA they were not going to resign and Pelleteir, a 2nd and a 7th got two decent skilled young players.

Canucks need to call in theFront OFfice, choose which trail to take and just start hikinhg. Unless that Jimmy Boy article and talk was to say we ride with this and off season deal with the noise. But if this sleeping giant bull crap I keep hearing on Spin 650 is what they think, I'm going to laugh when we DO NOT MAKE the playoffs cause nothing got done.

What's even worse is I seen articles where other teams media, fans and staff think vancouver wants to get FU**ED hard without any dinner or wine or anything. Like JT Miller for Morgan Rielly.

i understand every one of those has a context by which you could argue, but there is a pattern and my statement and list is accurate, you just want to refute the resulting inference that they're doing it on purpose. it is a fact they keep not extending veterans early and then the veterans increase their value.

Absolutely not.

After the tweets from earlier today about Horvat, I am even more against trading Petey. It would be idiotic. How long before another rift in the room with miller.

If we already didn’t trade him earlier and moved the player we want more in Bo, to do it again with Petey… what is the vision.
Agreed on this. Miller is the main problem. Move Petey, there's just gonna be another feud.

That post also makes exactly the wrong conclusion with respect to the rapidly rising cap. You want to keep fixed-cost players. Trading a Pettersson, who even in his "worst case" is still providing $8+m in value according to Dom's model, is a mistake.

The other poster seems to suggest trading Petey and then reallocating the cap space to a new star player(s). Trying to sign someone like Marner in this cap environment would run $14+M. Second line forwards are going to creep into the $7-8M range. Cost control will be king.

Right now, you tell all teams to pound sand unless they meet the asking price.

Keep having Rutherford go into the dressing room for "internal meetings" to yell at the boys at how "I'm not angry, just disappointed" he is so they keep winning.

Wait till the TDL where you hope teams become a level of desperation equivalent to "drunk, horny and 5 minutes till the bar closes" where they cave in.

Gonna be a long wait but likely the best approach.

Add a vet Dman upgrade. Hurry up. Obv the team and room needs it real bad, so do something preemptively.
Seriously, they should’ve added an Ian Cole tier veteran defenseman like a whole month ago, even (especially?) during all this drama and even if it’s not looking like a winning season to 1. calm the room a bit and 2. get Juulsen off this roster and Soucy less minutes

I think that's a pretty big misconception and something you might have gotten away with saying 10 years ago, but we certainly know more about it now. DeBrusk is a solid two way player regardless of whether he's scoring. Speed and puckhandling are the most important abilities in the NHL today.

I would guess that’s the piece the Avs want to give up, and likely not much else. Whether the Canucks have interest in that (and more) is another matter.
yeah would have to imagine thats the case. Maybe at best they are attaching a pick. They don't have their 2025 1st I can't see them loving the idea of giving up their 2026 1st. Not a ton of worthwhile prospects after their top 3.
