It's hard to make the case this team is positioned to even make the playoffs as currently constructed, though. It has been trending in the wrong direction for a while, is severely offensively challenged, and has highly questionable goaltending. They are probably near the lowest percentage chance to make the playoffs they've been all season. This is also really the worst roster they've iced all year.

I would almost guarantee that no typical, ticket-buying fan is looking at the moves today and thinking they are prioritizing the playoffs.
i mean yes but is it actually the right mentality to just give up? i just don't think that should ever be the mentality.

That's exactly what they should have been asking for, and it doesn't really make sense to move Boeser for anything less than that.

If they moved Boeser for a 2nd/3rd and punted on the remainder of the season, what kind of message does that send to Hughes who has sacrificed his body and health to get wins for this team? The goal for the team over the next couple years is to create an environment that keeps Hughes happy. Trading away Boeser and not bringing in another meaningful roster player to replace him would send a terrible message to a player who's ultra-competitive and has sacrificed a lot for this team.
Who said it was a 2nd/3rd? Getting a 1st and a prospect wouldn’t have been good value for a player you clearly aren’t willing to commit to going forward? Trading Boeser isn’t punting on anything, he’s been a complete non-factor for weeks.

Honrek maaaybe.

Marcus is not elite. Neither is Lekkeri.

We have Hughes. Thats it. EP40 if he gets his game back.
If we're comparing our position to when mgmt was hired, I'm pretty enthused with all of those players over Travis Hamonic, Tucker Poolman, Tanner Pearson etc. If you're asking me how to get more elite players then I don't have an answer, but I'm comfortable claiming the team as a whole looks stronger than it did back then.

Why dont we need to resign anyone?
We're at something like 20/23 one-way roster contracts next year. Our D is locked in for at least 2 years at their current salaries. Brock if resigned is only a modest upgrade of $1.5-2M. Similar with Suter or his replacement. Lekkerimaki, Willander, and EP25 on ELCs mean a lot of flexibility for new additions.

After all thats happened this last year we're going to have 15 mill to spend and not a single worthwhile player will consider this clown show management in free agency or via their no trade clauses.

Am I reading this wrong? This almost sounds like we had a good offer for him that people would've been mad he didn't take?
No he’s trying to suggest that Vancouver was the only team that couldn’t get good value back for their players. He’s treating the fanbase like idiots again. Remember the “we basically got three 1sts back” when they moved Horvat?

Mortgaging the future to possibly maybe have a chance at making the playoffs is a recipe for disaster. That's exactly what this is when boeser walks and suter wants close to 5m.
mortgaging the future = moving out picks for rentals.

what we've done is not trade away UFAs that we might still extend. last I check, we actually have a full set of picks this draft.

lol at Suter asking and getting 5M.

Allvin saying that the offers weren’t great for Boeser means nothing. For all we know they were asking for a young roster player and a 1st in return. He’s being called out for his inactivity, of course he’s going to try to defend himself. Virtually every other player that was traded received more value than expected. He’s full of shit.
That's a steaming pile of BS. 100% a lie.

He wants fans to believe no one would offer more for Boeser than WSH traded for Anthony Beauvillier? Complete fabrication.

Yeah, the club was probably "asking" for a top-six center in return for Boeser and duh, of course that offer didn't materialize.

The hubris of this management group knows no bounds. He really thinks we're that stupid.

i mean yes but is it actually the right mentality to just give up? i just don't think that should ever be the mentality.

I mean, it's semantics at that point. I'd argue they basically have given up by saying "this team is not good enough to buy, and we aren't going to sell, so let's just let this mediocre roster play out the year with probably underwhelming results, and we'll revisit in the summer". I guess I understand why they didn't do a full sell job for futures, but standing pat with this notably under-performing roster is not that much divorced from just signing away the rest of the season, in my opinion.

It would have been better trading Boeser for peanuts than to have this dynamic on the roster moving forward.

I can't imagine there is an agent in the league that would encourage a free agent to come to this team. Say what you will about Benning, but he always treated his players with respect. It's fine to say the offers were not what you felt were acceptable. There is no reason to throw Boeser (and Suter) under the bus.
The press conference definitely had some cringy moments. Say you didn’t see anything you thought made sense and leave it at that. Take the heat ffs.

Dragging a well liked and by all accounts class act player like Brock through the mud to make yourself look better is low. And embarrassing.

Honest question. With how this deadline played out, and with the current state of the team, do you believe in management to get a QH deal done when it comes up?
I mean, kinda. There isn't really any negotiating to be done with Quinn. You hand him the cheque and let him fill in the number. Management can't (well, shouldn't) screw that one up.

It's pretty much just up to whether he wants to stay in Vancouver or not.

he most certainly did not
that's absolutely false
People already forgetting this tidbit from a month ago

Mike Tanev said in contract negotiations Jim Benning said Chris Tanev was as soft as baby poop

Mike told the agent to tell Benning:"I'm old enough to remember when Benning played for the Leafs and he used to go in the corner with 12 eggs and come out with 13"

getting more than Beau doesn't mean the offer is still crap. Considering the teams left, it could just be a 1st rounder and maybe asking us for a lower round pick back.

The question is, does getting a late 1st in a shitty draft actually help us get the player we need to replace Brock? Keeping the pick doesn't really help us because it will most likely tank the morale and I am sure you want to communicate to the room that you are throwing in the towel.

At least now you can say to the room, we don't trust you guys to go all in but we haven't done anything to downgrade the roster and it's up to you guys to prove that you guys can do it and if you can't then we'll make bigger changes in the offseason.

The only thing worse than not selling is buying, and that would have made me officially give up on this team for at least the rest of the season.

They have two years to find a way to keep Quinn Hughes, or I'm finding a new team to cheer for. Honest to God. This franchise doesn't deserve the loyalty we've shown them for so many years. The owners don't give a f*** about the fans, they only care about squeaking into the playoffs for Game 3 and 4.

Tanev basically ghosted Tanev before UFA and then when everything fell apart, they didn't circle back with an offer, they actually went back and ask Tanev to wait because they want to see if something else works with another player before they actually circle back.

i don't know, i think you can always go to the room and say, you guys weren't good enough this year for us to get you help and it's up to you guys to prove that you guys are good.

that's drastically different than, we think you are not good enough to the point that we actually sold.

He's been a complete non-factor for weeks and we want a 1st and a prospect for him!

Beauvillier got a 2nd.
Schenn got a 2nd and a 4th
B Tanev got a 2nd

Those 3 players are below replacement level players. All borderline cap dumps.

Boeser at 50% retained (3.3m) absolutely gets a 1st and a prospect. Its just a fact, but they want him for this playoff run.

I thought I'd calm down more after a couple hours have passed but Im getting increasingly more angry. My estimation of Allvin as being a good GM is super low now and will continue to be.

Terrible off season of shitty signings that didnt work out, all these cap gymnastics to accrue cap, trading our best player only to to fail at bridging the offensive gap, being miles apart in contract talks with Suter and failing to trade him in an overinflated sellers market, and then doubling down in the presser thinking this team is capable of competing.

We are infinite echelons away from even remotely being able to compete against the west and florida teams. Just absolutely moronic. I think im done for the day.
