Quadrelli made a great point today ... if your stated goal is keeping Hughes in Vancouver, you have failed today. The goal should be to ice the most competitive team possible next year, and you've done nothing to move in that direction after today. You have at best kept your head slightly above water during a sinking playoff race, in a dysfunctional season where the number of games Hughes even plays in moving forward is highly in question.

that's false, keeping the team competitive with long term pieces is the way to keep Hughes. Getting rentals won't do anything to keep Hughes.

yeah all the hand wringing about what message trading boeser now sends to hughes is misplaced. the team needs to have a big year next year so they can get hughes signature on an extension on july 1 2026

I have no real issue with setting a price at X and not giving in when your offers suck.

This isn’t like Benning where he turned down good offers for Hamhuis.

They needed tangible stuff to be able to flip for better stuff.

However..

We needed to make moves independent of moves that required us flipping assets.

So not making use of the capspace we gathered is ridiculous. We should have added guys. Obviously you can say that nothing made sense for them to buy but it’s a results business and doing what they did today is horrific. Just sucks.

I am 95% sure Quinn Hughes is a goner as we will be in the start of an unintentional rebuild by 2027-28.

I just see zero offensive talent coming up the pipeline. There are zero elite UFAs that will sign here. It's very hard to make trades to bring in young U27 studs. A guy like Lekkerimaki shows flashes but it's apparant he isn't a sure bet to evolve into a legit top line winger.

Eh. If he’s viewed as a full time Canuck now, I’m fine with him avoiding the AHL. It’s a lawless wasteland where cheap shots on good players are freely allowed. Don’t even really want Lekkerimaki going back, to be honest.
probably more beneficial for Lekk to start his offseason and get stronger.

which at this point, will probably be decided by luck more than anything. whoever gets that wildspot is probably just the team that doesn't go through a torrid goalie run over the next 20 games.

All I know is that whatever they did(didn't) do today didn't help achieve either of those strategies. It didn't help set this team up better just for next year or long term.
we freed up Soucy's cap so we have more money to upgrade the roster in the offseason.

I mean that was layup move though, especially with MPetey/Mancini added and DPetey's rise.

Hopefully they can get Boeser and Suter signed to surplus value contracts to justify holding them

Alvin messed up and it had nothing to do with what he did at the deadline. The messaging today was really bad, he just needed to come and be honest. Instead he kind of came up with an excuse that I think he even didn't believe because he felt the need to put a hyperbole behind the statement.

If you believe that Boeser was worth more to you than the packages that were offered because making the playoffs is important to this team and building experience and generating playoff revenue that's fine. I get it but to come out and say these offer were not good enough, and that you would be shocked at the value, was just bad messaging. And rilled up a fan base that was already mad.
Which is why I wanted Rutherford to do the presser today. Canuck fans & media respond waaaay better to Rutherford's blunt honesty than to Allvin's double-speak. I'm surprised they haven't learned that yet. We're not stupid, so stop speaking to us as if you think we are. If you have a plan, communicate that plan to us.

your original point was that we didn't do anything to improve our chances to retain Quinn, like i said, clearing cap to improve the team is a step towards improving our chances to retain Quinn.

I am not sure throwing in the towel would actually improve our chances to impress Quinn. If we were able to flip those assets, then yeah. If we are not able to flip those assets then no.

yep. and it sure would be nice to have some assets to spend to do those upgrades!
if they would've gotten those assets to make those upgrades then that would've happen.

just checked again, no winger outside of Ratanen got a 1st rounder, teams just don't want to spend 1st rounders on a non premium position. probably could've gotten 2nd rounders + prospects and maybe some late round picks but then is that going to get us the upgrade we need? looking at what went today, doesn't look like it.

Well, we could have given up Willlander and 2 1sts and likely traded for rantanen, but, we wouldnt have been able to extend him.

Way things were working out, it was extremely unlikely we would have had a chance at any of the top shelf rentals.

There was also no way we would have been able to trade Boeser to upgrade the top 6. Just wasnt going to happen.

Aren’t you happy? They did exactly what you wanted them to do, moved Soucy and nothing else.
