That's a lot of weak sauce. Anthony Beauvillier fetched a 2nd round pick. There must be some kind of middle ground between him and Rantanen that Boeser would have slotted into, no?

I mean if the market wasn't there, why go through all the motions of talking to his agent etc? Isn't it their job to do this beforehand?

This 100% stinks of a last minute scramble.
And if teams truly didn't want a $3M Boeser, then what the hell are we doing if we pay him north of $8M?

Tbf it isn't managements fault that Miller and EP threw in the towel this season. Also Marchand only got a 2nd so maybe teams didn't want to give much for Boeser?

Given the tire fire of injuries, personal issues (cancer for one), and locker room issues... we are still 1 point out of the playoffs with 21 games left.

I dunno. It isn't the end of the world.

Suter and Forbort are worth more to our PK and team than we would have got back likely and maybe they will both re-sign.

Minnesota paid a 2nd for a far worse player in Gustav Nyquist. Who’s to say they wouldn’t have offered a 1st or even a 2nd+ for Boeser and were turned down by Vancouver because they “couldn’t take a step back”? It’s telling that Allvin gave no indication of what they considered to be terrible returns but I’m sure we may hear some info leak out in the near future.
"If I told you what I was offered for Brock Boeser, I think I would have to run out of here."

That definitely doesn't mean a first-round pick. It clearly means a first-round pick wasn't offered. I wouldn't have traded Boeser for a second and a middling prospect. That reeks of doing something just to do something.

For all the talk of what a great year Boeser had last year, Nyqvist had more points. I don't think he's far worse, and I don't think Bill Guerin has ever liked Boeser much. If they do like him, they can just sign him in the summer.

"Hey Brock. You're are good but we think you aren't worth what you are asking"
"Hey Brock. We still like you but focused on re-signing Lankinen, MP and DOC as they are more a priority"
"Hey Brock. We are looking to trade you. Where would you be ok to moving to?"
"Hey Brock. Teams didn't value you enough so you're staying"
"Hey Brock. Still interested in re-signing?"

Good grief.

I'd have been happy if we traded BB6 and Suter and made deals for Kunin and Zetterlund. The latter was probably the best deal made today.

Like I said, did those pieces fetch 2nds because buyers were willing to pay more or was it because anything outside of the 1st round has less relative value because the draft is crap.

considering the fact teams were only willing to trade away their 1st for premium positions, I would say there is a big difference in value this year between 1st and 2nd rounders.

Just look at Rakell, he’s been on the block and he’s a better bet than Brock but nobody wanted to pay a 1st ++ package to get him either. That shows you the demand or the willingness to pay for that level of wingers.

surprised by the panic/outrage here over boeser - i don't think they were ever really about to trade the longest tenured canuck, a letter wearing, well-liked player who is probably the best offensive forward on the team at the moment. it'd be a mini-version of tulsky's rantanen disaster if they did the same thing - trade boeser to the highest suitor for a futures based return, and then fail to cash that in instantly for a different option that can help.

agreed with others who have noted - that may have been the plan at some point, until the cozens - norris trade materialized and took both options off of the table. can't control how the market shakes out. who knows, maybe if rantanen moves last night, we cash in brock first thing and have the chips needed to get one of cozens or norris before that deal went through first thing this morning.

more surprised they didn't do anything with suter - mainly given the rumored dallas deal, it seems like he has probably indicated his price and it isn't something the canucks will/can match. especially when beauvillier goes for that - different player, sure - but a team like njd or minnesota, who did nothing... they weren't interested in a utility guy that can play essentially anywhere in the lineup?

but then you gotta look at other teams in positions near us. calgary did nothing - they could have moved vladar and picked up a cheap replacement. st. louis could've moved radek faska for a marginal pick. utah could've moved bjugstad for a decent return; they moved shea weber instead.

we also don't have clear holes that could be addressed or places of strength; like la made an astute move for cheap picking up kuzmenko. that's a guy we ran out of town lol. we got a much better player for the same position in m. pettersson vs walman. vegas added a washed up reilly smith.

considering that, i'd rather keep suter for this stretch drive, even if we miss the playoffs, vs adding a 3rd or whatever. the "keeping hughes" element of this cannot be underestimated.

finally, nothing from today suggests to me that aquilini meddled lol

Canucks must be cursed

In the past it was "no one wants our garbage"

Now it's "no one wants to pay a fair price for our good players"

The way this regime has treated players both still here and long since gone will come back to haunt this orginization for years to come.

Tonnes of capspace is great until you realize you've earned a garbage reputation leaguewide with your antics and no one wants to work with you.
It's my least favourite thing about them: their big mouths. It's unprofessional and counterproductive. On the day's non-trades, though, I don't much care. The team is in a playoff spot despite enduring the worst luck I've ever seen. We'll see how it goes. A late first in a bad draft isn't going to make or break this franchise, even if that was offered.

We got a third for Soucy and cleared his cap for next season. We get to play Boeser and Suter for a hopeful playoff push the rest of this season. We can either try to extend one or both, or let them walk and clear their caps too. Imo this was a good TDL. We kept our two important players while freeing up a lot of July 1 cap space.

What Allvin, quite literally communicated to the room today, is that he wanted to trade Brock but didn't get the offer he had mind. At no point have they ever put much real effort into re-signing Brock. Is this supposed to be good for the group morale?

Allvin is almost explicitly saying he doesn't think this group is good enough this season. Is that good for morale?

I mean, yeah, if they got a first round back for Brock earlier in the day, and then were able to turn that into a different asset (Zetterlund), or use it at the draft to acquire a different player, that would be more helpful than playing out the string this season and watching Brock walk.
The management keeps damaging the locker room.

Nyquist, Beauvillier, Kunin returns make me think that the Boeser offers(specially if retention was on the table) couldn't have been that bad at all.

Maybe his agent knows something we don’t and has made that clear around the league when he was looking for a partner for the Canucks 2 years ago would be my guess.
