I would imagine any 3rd line center they target will be a RH'ed shot. Compher, Gaudreau, Bjugstad, Rodrigues I think are all potential targets as UFA. Trading one of Boeser/Garland for an overpaid 3rd line center may also be an option.

Bjugstad is a name I've brought up before and I kind of think he might be an ideal fit here in terms of role & cost. He'll get a raise off his current deal but maybe you're looking at 2 x 1.75 or 3 x 1.5??

I was hoping for Rodrigues last year. I’d love to see a reasonably cheap contract for a 3C rather than a bigger contract for a name like Barbashev who isn’t really a 3C anyways.

Pod, 3C, Mikheyev, so long as that 3C is under 3m and defensively responsible, would be what we need I think. I’m pretty happy with our fourth line now, and even with a Boeser/Garland trade I think our top two lines are very good. I’d even be ok with moving both of them, slotting Hoglander onto the 3rd or 2nd line, and clearing up even more cap room to fix the D.

He seems pretty happy in Edmonton, I’d be surprised if they didn’t match such an offer.

I wonder what kind of contract Ryan O'Reilly is going to get this summer. 3 yrs x $6M? I like that a lot more than the numbers being thrown around for the likes of Barbashev and Sundqvist.

Not always but I agree with the sentiment. I was thinking of O'Reilly as an option for next season but he is a player who will get a commitment so far out of whack with what he's actually capable of doing. With an actual playoff team too.

It's hard to read. He will either leave massive dollars on the table signing a sweetheart deal with the Leafs (like Gio and Spezza did) for under 1.5 mil or go onto a team like Seattle/Detroit for a multi-year deal worth 4mil.

Giordano and Spezza were like 37/38 when they signed those deals. I can't see O'Reilly doing it at age 32.

I see your point but O'Reilly's skating has really taken a hit and his body will likely fail on him sooner.

Any team that signs him to any stupid 3-4 year deal will probably regret it at the onset.

Seems like a Ken Holland sort of move...

Would imagine with his injury history that he could opt for a longer term in anticipation of LTIRetirement vs a big cap hit, especially if he's staying with the Leafs or going to another contender.

Maybe like $4m x 5 years, as front-loaded and signing bonus oriented as possible. Something like 5-5-5-2.5-2.5.

Definitely seems like a Ken Holland move to make.

Honestly, how many teams have signed UFAs to big multi-year deals and have no regretted it?

1 in 5?

Stay away from day 1 UFAs unless they are franchise level players...and the franchise guys don't come up every year.

This should surprise absolutely no one.

Feels like a given at this point, though obviously there are a ton of factors involved.

Still, jettisoning Myers and one (or both) of Boeser/Garland, and bringing in Gavrikov, a 3C, and ideally re-signing Bear and one of the college D for the right side seems like a decent approach for the off season.

I liked him well enough in Columbus but I thought he looked absolutely terrific for LA in the game against us a few days ago.

His time in LA will determine what kind of contract he gets. Right now, it seems pretty variable in both cap hit and length.

I think the latter (trading Garland or Boesser for an overpaid third line center) is the best path forward. Getting one in FA, while also acquiring another defensemen, is going to mean attaching sweeteners to get rid of the other guys as teams will know we're between a rock and a hard place.

Much better to do inneficient money for inneficient money than inneficient money (free agency) + paying to dump a contract. Curious if anyone has any good targets in mind.

If the team can do this while also acquiring a top 4 defensemen like Gavrikov in free agency (likely requires trading Myers after his bonus is paid out, unsure how much that will cost the team), they put themselves in a much better position to contend for the playoffs next year.

Having 4 top 4 dmen still seems like a pipe dream, but at least we have Hughes who can cover for some of the talent deficiencies around him.

His underlying metrics reflect this pretty strongly too. He's gone from a middling CF% throughout his career with Columbus to 58%+ since the trade. His deployment has been much softer in LA (40% ozone start in Columbus but 60% in LA), but surrounding him with a good structure and better teammates has also done wonders for his game.

Same. Smart player, he made a couple of nice defensive plays where he just read the play one step ahead perfectly. Something this team sorely lacks.

Funny thing is I remember the Canucks playing CBus early this year and I was surprised at how often he joined the rush at pretty much every opportunity. Looked more like an offensive minded dman that game.

It’s crazy that even with the addition of Gavrikov and Hronek we would still only have 3 top 4 guys. But it’s probably our only realistic bet, and hope we can sign a guy like Livingstone to partner on the bottom pairing with OEL, or with Wolanin in the event of injuries

Does it? Isn’t the bar for a Dman his age and ability the $6.25m x 7 or 8 that Weegar and Sanheim signed?

It’s why I can’t find the excitement and hope for change everyone else seems to have.

Dumba and Severson will also get paid.

I just can’t see how they move Myers, Boeser, and Garland for zero cap returns and imo that’s what needs to happen to get that 3C, and 2-3 more dmen.

I personally expect more under the radar targets like Bear.

Sell high on Beau - he's a fine player but once Mikheyev comes back, he's redundant and he doesn't PK like Mik. Hopefully get a solid draft pick back. Then again of course, i'm not sure any team needs wingers regardless.

I wonder if someone would take Myers with a bit of retention if we added a Hoglander in there. I like Hoglander but there's no room for him in the top 6 and he deserves a chance to shine elsewhere. Plus he's kind of redundant with Garland here and all the other wingers. We have a lot of winger prospects who look like they could fill bottom 6 roles, like Bains and Mcdonough.

And then Imo retain on Boeser, find him somewhere he can thrive again for a draft pick. Unfortunately this team didn't take that opportunity at the deadline because for some reason they apparently were opposed to retention?

It would probably be a mistake to sign Severson to a huge contract but man he might look good on the top pair with Hughes.
