I know we’re kinda flopping the tank, but you add Hronek, Gavrikov, and Reinbacher (maybe Livingstone if he hits) to this defence and that is a rebuilt d core. I dont think there is very much you can do outside of a Toews type landslide win trade to improve beyond that
3/4 of those guys are very low odds to actually acquire. I love Gavrikov and he’s Russian and there’s the Milstein factor but there’s 31 other teams. Just not getting my hopes up for him.

Livingstone would also be great but again, 31 other teams and there’s the BC connection but that’s never really mattered before.

Reinbacher is in that unicorn RHD position and no one would be surprised if he went top 7.

Trust me I would love all those guys and they would instantly make the defense respectable. I hope you’re right and I’m wrong!

I think the latter (trading Garland or Boesser for an overpaid third line center) is the best path forward. Getting one in FA, while also acquiring another defensemen, is going to mean attaching sweeteners to get rid of the other guys as teams will know we're between a rock and a hard place.

Much better to do inneficient money for inneficient money than inneficient money (free agency) + paying to dump a contract. Curious if anyone has any good targets in mind.

There are some interesting names on D.

Contract term matches with Pearson and Beauvillier: Mike Rielly, Joel Edmundson, Justin Schultz, Dylan DeMelo
With Boeser: David Savard, Neil Pionk, Cody Ceci, Brayden McNabb, Marcus Pettersson (okay, probably a pipe dream)
With Garland: Brett Kulak (a real possibility IMO), Mike Matheson, Cam Fowler, Connor Murphy, Andrew Peeke

But I don't see many great cap-dump, right-shot centers out there. J-G Pageau, Charlie Coyle, Ryan Johansen, Jack Roslovic. If you don't care about handedness there's Alex Wennberg, Christian Dvorak, Nick Schmaltz, Radek Faksa, Yanni Gourde...

Oh yeah, I think its a very low odds scenario, like I said I think thats an ideal outcome that could possibly rebuild our D

I would take Reinbacher at 6 and maybe 5 over Smith

Hopefully we won’t have to heavily rely on him with the addition of Hronek…and his play improves with the new D coaches and structure.
Structure cant improve the fact he looks like he can’t keep up with the pace of the game.

What’s with this OEL returning crap lately. Get him off this Fing team.
You simply tell this loser: you are getting bought out or you develop a allergy to your equipment. The choice is yours.

Even if his knee is pooched, doesn’t mean he can be clueless in the D zone and weak as F. No emotion. He is done.

His underlying metrics reflect this pretty strongly too. He's gone from a middling CF% throughout his career with Columbus to 58%+ since the trade. His deployment has been much softer in LA (40% ozone start in Columbus but 60% in LA), but surrounding him with a good structure and better teammates has also done wonders for his game.
I saw a feature on how he plays sort of like Bieksa did in the neutral zone in the sense that he plays off of his hockey sense and attacks the puck carrier while moving forward and using timing rather than backing in like most D.

I believe the stat was that he led all NHL d in stick checks in the neutral zone.

If you're gonna keep OEL it has to be in a bottom pairing role, and you basically must ensure that your other 5 regular defenders are highly mobile. In the modern NHL you get to dress maximum one slug and be competetive.

Not happy about OEL coming back but at the end of the day, OEL with one of Bear, Hughes, or Dermott had a >50 xGF%, which makes you have some faint hope he can be not useless in a reduced role next season.
