Dermott, Bear, Studnika, Stillman

Some pro-scouting misses. Studnika is an AHLer. Dermott and Bear are depth dmen that are injury prone and Stillman sucked.

Books still out on Kravtsov. Really need some luck when it comes to these age gap players as well

Think you're overstating it. Studnika is a failure at C but is a adequate 4th line grinder with PK ability. Stillman netted the Canucks a material asset in Bloom, so you can't quibble there. Bear is a solid #5 who can at least be the supporting piece on a top pairing with Hughes - being a cheap top pairing defenseman like this can be huge (look at how Dallas has build their defence - cheap guys playing with stars in Miller/Heiskanen and Hakinpaa/Lindell).

Dermott is the big failure. He cost the most and probably won't be qualified. Injuries a factor but they knew that going into it.

How is Bear a miss? He is a legit top 6 defenseman. Maybe more of a #5 than a top 4 guy. But for giving up nothing for him that's a bizarre take.

Bear's been carried by Hughes all year and bombed when split from him. We paid a 2nd to clear the cap to bring him on (and ultimately add Bloom), he wasn't free.

RD are so scarce that despite not being great and as long as he's cheap it's probably worth seeing if he has more to give in a less dysfunctional setting next year so I'm not ready to call it a fail quite yet, but I'm also not willing to call him a #5 either and I really don't want him to be the long term partner for Hughes. Hughes deserves better and I'm wary of the guys getting pumped by Hughes, e.g. what Schenn probably wants for his next contract.

To be fair, our other LHD for most of the year have been OEL and Stillman. I'd be more surprised if there wasn't a massive drop off away from Hughes.

Go look at the numbers it tells a different story. Every defencemen Bear has played with has put up better numbers with him than without him. Hughes numbers have gone up dramatically when paired with Bear instead of Schenn. Same with OEL his numbers with Bear instead of Myers are night and day. Yeah Bears number would have gone done not playing with Hughes but using context his next most common defence partners were OEL and Stillman that's a huge dropoff in talent. Also, he was the only partner OEL had other than Hughes in which their pairing was able to keep their head above water.

Bear has virtually no data with defenders other than Hughes and OEL. If you're using the small sample sizes then unsurprisingly OEL performed best paired with Hughes, not Bear.

I agree that Schenn bombed away from Hughes hence my wariness of the Hughes boost with his extension demand, and Myers has been a train wreck.

Beating those two out doesn't sell me on Bear though other than Bear being the only one of the three I'm okay with seeing back next year if he's cheap, unless Schenn signs another <1M deal.

A reminder that it is still possible to trade players.
The issue is, that who ever gets traded can't play in the play offs.
However this does mean any team that has a player unable to play for the next 4-5 weeks, could still deal with the Canucks.
They would get a player that helps cement their play off spot, the return to the Canucks could be draft picks, prospects, or even the other team's injured player.

Toronto has Ryan O'Reilly out
Nashville is missing Alex Carrier
as a couple of examples.

Malinski makes a lot of sense

We have Jack Malone on that team so we probably have a skills coach or scout that visits the team every now and then
RH Puck Moving D who is built like a fire Hydrant
Would probably get Top pairing/bottom 6 duties depending on what team he makes
Would be competing with Johansson for the 3rd pairing RD job come trainning camp

Livingston, Silye and Hiroso are all on the same team and all names I've heard the Canucks have been interested in for different reasons

Thanks. :)
I should have gone to cap friendly to verify.
Curse you, MSN search engine.

I didn't know either, but was curious if there as examples of players traded post deadline and that came up.

Bear is a pro scouting miss?? What? LOL

Dude was playing good minutes for us next to Hughes. Bear got a shot in the face… not exactly something you can predict? Dude cost us a 5th rounder… disagree with Bear.

Dermott’s been hurt and hasn’t had a fair shake. He was OK while he played.

Dermott looks like a solid player but his qualifying offer is 1,750,000 and he's been hurt each year for us. It's tough to pay him that much when we'll be scratching for every penny already.

Its near impossible to move OEL - even if you get a buyer, NMC. People talk about buyout but looking at the calculator for it, I don't find it reasonable to have 2 years of 5 million in penalty and still another multiple years of 2+ million penalty. Essentially we are in on OEL until he LTIRetires.

That being noted, we are heavily invested in OEL succeeding for as long as possible. Hronek could go a long way towards that as a partner. OEL succeeded as a top 4 D as recently as last year and it's not impossible he recovers from this year's terrible showings.

How do the Canucks manage the 3-LD spot then? Can they afford to spend more money on a left side with Hughes and OEL already? Can they afford to skimp and have OEL fall apart next year? That's a tough one for me. Brisebois for cheap can only help - probably why they are giving Wolanin a chance too.

It would be nice to hit on a college UFA like Livingstone as he seems to fit what we lack on the right side. There are some interesting UFAs for us on D - Graves, Severson, Dumba, Mayfield....

If OEL and Hronek pair then I would pair Hughes up with a larger defensive D and feed them the tougher minutes that aren't soaked by a bolstered 3rd pairing. Mayfield seems like a guy who could handle that and needs no PP time.

To put the lineup that goes with the thought process:

Hughes-Mayfield
OEL-Hronek
Graves-Bear/College UFA
Brisebois

Ignoring trade possibilities, it makes sense to skimp on pairing a true top pair guy with Hughes to spend some cap on the guy you put behind OEL. I also feel it's imperative we add size, strength, defense around Hughes/Hronek/OEL. It doesn't need to be out style but we need to be able to clear a crease in series against playoff bullies.

Could only afford 1.. graves is the better of the two.. but he would be ideal for hronek.. but is similar to OEL in the slow factor

As much as I find the idea of an OEL buyout sickening on multiple levels...it really isn't THAT terrible when you look at Minnesota and the near $13m in dead cap this year and next 2 years of close to $15m in dead cap...so a couple of years at close to $5m and a handful at just over $2m, while highly annoying and moderately restrictive, isn't completely debilitating to the team...however, this is where it would be nice to have a pipeline of ELC's who could step into the lineup and be effective players, and offset some of the damage of the dead cap space...I just really have a hard time seeing Aquilini agreeing to buy him out without some real kicking and screaming and trying to put it off.

relying on another year of players like dermott or bear to play big minutes would just be a mistake. realistically they are both 6/7s. them playing up further in our line-up and us looking for reasons to make it seem like they fit is just because of how bad our defence has been.
its better to acquire proper top 4 defencemen or to give time to prospects/ncaa players and see if theres a legitimate hit

The buyout option is a lot more palatable when you consider the replacement cost.

Let's assume that if he is not bought out, OEL will play two mores seasons at 2LD, and two more seasons at 3LD.

And let's assume that if OEL is bought out, they'd essentially be paying another 2LD player for those two seasons to replace him at an asssumed cost of $6mm and two seasons of a 3LD at an assumed cost of $1mm.

4 more years of OEL isn’t feeling all they depressing now that there are viable options, a buyout isn’t awful, I would hope that a trade and retention is available. I wonder if there is a team that would take him at 5 million for the next 3 years ( that’s with this coming year used to evaluate if he’s able to return to some form )
Would a package of a 2025 1st and something be enough

Now let’s circle back to the ever loved JT Miller talk
Will we be talking trade with Pittsburgh and will we be taking Granlund back in the trade to make the salaries work !!

The buyout option is a lot more palatable when you consider the replacement cost.

And finally... what if you think that he has declined so much that as soon as next season he is only capable of playing 3LD minutes? Well, the buyout is obvious:

I hear what this is saying but you would need to factor in the other LHD and the 3rd lhd below OEL if on the roster

It needs to encompass the entire picture imo to be accurate

I'm probably just going to sit firmly on the fence for the OEL buyout talk until something actually happens. Lots of good reasons for buying him out and some good reasons for giving it another year.

To me it just comes down to if the organization believes that this was just a bad year or it was about injuries and he can bounce back and be a #4 defenseman worth $4 million or so. If the answer is yes, I think you bring him back. If you truly think he's done, you buy him out.

If OEL's play this year can be attributed to injuries then there's a good chance that injuries persist for a while and at some point he just finishes his contract on LTIR.
