Thank you for explaining it however it still doesn't make sense. How reasonable is it to entertain the idea of a 15 million offer? And then is it more or less reasonable to throw the term of two years out there?
If the Canucks matched he is a FA at the end. The cap will go up by 14 mil in 3 years.
If accepted then he could sign a bigger contract for 8 years and finish out his career.

15 million or 10 million it is the same cost, four 1rsts.
15 million makes it nothing short of impossible for the Canucks to match without destroying the team.
Two years also hurts the Canucks due to the OEL 4.6766 million buyout. 15+4.68 mil is almost 2/3 to 3/4 of available cap space with 9+ players to sign.

A desperate franchise might try and if one does there may be others that tip their hat. If that happened and the Canucks knew early enough they could get a haul in an auction.

Columbus, Buffalo, Montreal, would not happen with Lammer but NYI, Washington Mostly to worry about might be GM's on the verge of retiring or being fired. Especially Columbus. Ottawa cannot do this.

Offer sheets are not a thing.

There have been 2 offer sheet situations in the last dozen years and they both turned into disasters for the team attempting it.

The first was the Feaster/Weisbrod O'Reilly offer sheet in Calgary where they didn't know the rules and could have lost the picks and then had to put the player on waivers.

The second was the Montreal/Carolina Aho/Kotkaniemi clusterf***.

Nobody is doing this. It isn't a thing. It doesn't happen. It isn't something to waste energy thinking about or worrying about.

For the people that wanted to sign Mike Reilly in the off-season, he's on waivers! Word of warning, Panthers fans have described him as "terrible". He was also terrible before this season.
$1M warm body, they should put in a claim.

Ya, that's the "unwritten rule" but RFA's were never paid 8 or 9 million a year either. OR communicated that they were anything but absolutely thrilled to be on the team.
Things are changing, slowly.
But with the well known effects of players moving when possible and Laine and Dubois wanting change and getting it.
Just EP's hesitation might spur a team to threaten even if they don't follow through.

Worry? It is within the rules. It has been done before. How many times has "the threat" just never seen the light of day? Rarely for sure but possible. Not to worry, if stays or goes. The team lost with him and they will lose without him.

Besides the fact that offer sheets aren't a thing.

If Pettersson won't sign in Vancouver because he wants to win.... why would he sign with any of those teams that are eve farther away from winning?

Common sense.

Nothing is changing other than offer sheets are getting rarer and rarer because they literally never turn into a positive result for the team making them. And they waste a lot of time for no result, and they create an enemy.

You'd be better off worrying about a meteor hitting Pettersson's car as he's driving to the rink.

Starting to remind me of the Luongo pre shit contract fear. Who cares. Either he wants to be here or not
If he wants to hold the team hostage and thinks he's bigger than the logo then he's a prima donna and you'll never win with him so better to turn the page than being his bitch.

With that said I don't think anything has changed. He wants to win they are winning and the money offered will be fair it's just a matter of him wanting to spend his career in Vancouver. It's a good situation for him here. He would be an idiot for not wanting to see it to its full potential. I like Pettersson but teams need a core of stars not just one. Taking everything off the table for others is not a way to win and that by his own words is at the top of importance.

I think they will find common ground

You think Vancouver is closer than Buffalo or Columbus?
The Canucks have this year then the OEL cap hits happen.
The defence is still a mess.
In three years Buffalo and Columbus will be miles ahead especially if EP goes to one of those teams.

Common sense? Okay who is on the team in 3 years? The Canucks?
How many players are under 25 regulars playing on the team?

Pettersson has been in the system for 8 years and never had a winning season. Even this great start can be wiped out if Hughes or Demko get hurt. They just don't have the depth. Whereas Buffalo and Columbus have players that are improving every year for the next 3 to 5 years.

I do think the Canucks got a good enough start to make the show but they have been very lucky with outrageous scoring percentages.

are you alright?

again sorry, way too complicated - i think it is more reasonable (even going down the offersheet path) to expect a 1 year or 7 year offer

Winning seasons and playing in playoffs, they aren't there yet.

Would you buy waterfront property when the tide is out?

It isn't just him, all this signing drama falls directly into Benning mostly and Allvin's running of the team, mostly Benning.

Winning is important to him, is that wrong?

Yes, everybody thinks that Vancouver is closer than Columbus. How is this even a discussion?

I haven’t watched enough Abbotsford games this year to tell. Does McWard deserve the call up over Woo or is it a waiver thing?

No.

Woo is probably averaging 23 minutes/game on the top pairing and McWard is averaging probably 16 minutes/game on the 3rd pairing and hasn't looked impressive in those minutes. It isn't even close in terms of who's the better player right now.

Quinn Schmiemann who's on an AHL deal (and a month younger than McWard) was playing bigger, higher-leverage minutes than McWard last weekend and looking more impressive while doing it.

Oh I don't know about that,
Montreal offer sheet Aho and Carolina matches and gets a bargain for Aho's contract.
Carolina offer sheet's Montreal and gets Koky at a bargain rate, gives up pretty much nothing and makes the playoffs every year after.
Enemy or rivalry?

A lot of time? Not anymore than a regular contract.

Meteor hitting EP's car is better odds than the odds of no Canadian team not winning the cup in 30 years. :D

one year the Canucks might be able to deal with 7 years would have to be 15 mil a year or more because the cap will be going up 20+ million over the next 7 years. If EP signs for 2 years then he can sign for 8 with the new team if that's what they want to do.

Even without the offer sheet idea I don't think EP signs for more than 3 years if that long no matter the amount. As I posted earlier EP, if he is willing to give Allvin more of a chance, he might sign for less for a short term. But if he was inclined to that he would be signing now so Allvin etal can get to work filling holes and planning ahead.

Allows room for McWard & Aman. Can also place Suter on regular IR and leave an additional 1.6m in space.

Edit: Confirmed

So it's probably a waiver thing or the strange attraction to McWard that showed in the preseason.

Waivers aren't a factor in this case.
I must admit I've given up figuring out waivers. I followed it for years but the rules change and I now can't be bothered learning the new ones. Kinda the same reason I have an old phone.

Once a player clears waivers, they can be recalled and don't have to go on waivers again until they play 10 games or on the roster for 30 days.

Woo cleared waivers at the beginning of the season.
