Went to look at more details on Chmelevski and ... My god, what was going on with the San Jose Barracuda in 2021-22?

Kessel isn’t a top 6 player anymore. Would much rather target Vatrano or someone like him
I'm thinking about acquisition cost a little bit. Wondering if a thought could be Kessel on the 4th with Lafferty and Mikheyev, and Hoglander on the 2nd with EP and Lindholm to form a dynamic Swedish Touch line?

The question is how much does Kessel have left in the tank, and is he a better player/fit on the 4th than Aman right now?

Just spitballin.

Imagine if Kessel is just like completely offended at not getting a deal, and just fully committed himself to proving everyone wrong. Just in the gym 24/7 and took a nutrition degree or whatever over the summer. Learned to fight. Comes back just angry.
There is nothing more dangerous than an angry, surprisingly agile chubby guy.

I’m surprised as well. It’s also funny that they ship out Kuzmenko only too look at the next Kuzmenko.

He's a fully American guy who spent his entire career in the AHL/OHL so presumably he won't have the defensive/system adjustment issues that plagued Kuzmenko.

Sharks still own his rights, and maybe I'm just not paying attention, but you have to wonder at least a bit as to why The Sharks of all teams are willing to give him permission to try to find a new home.

He'll be a Group VI UFA on July 1 as he'll have turned 25 years old and has <80 games of NHL experience.

Capfriendly just doesn't update statuses from RFA to Group VI UFA until after the season, something that's come up as a thing here before (Will Lockwood).

Chmelevski was a stand out in the 2019 world juniors. I remember really liking his game, looked dynamic, decent speed but was a work in progress skating wise. He had grit to go along with his playmaking abilities. That was years ago now.

Don’t know if he’s a real talent or a Sam Gagner type tweener. Personally I’m indifferent towards signing him, I think there’s better alternative via college route.

How the hell did Jaycob Megna play 22 games for them on D and manage an even +/-, and why the hell didn't he win the Norris that year?

Interesting. I didn't really look into it, just saw a thing saying the Sharks were looking to trade his rights and gave him permission to try to find a home.

How mad is that one guy gonna be if the team signs Chmelevski and not Kravtsov?

There absolutely will not be a better NCAA UFA than a guy blowing up the KHL.

I'm guessing this would just to be to get a head start/edge on signing him?

He should certainly be a Group VI UFA unless there's some rule I'm totally not aware of, but I'm pretty sure I'm correct and we've done a pretty deep dive on this in the past.

Oh, I'm not doubting he'll go UFA, and that's almost certainly the case. Just clarifying that I hadn't looked into his status beyond the things saying they were letting him find a trade partner.

Edit: Actually, I think the Group VI thing only happens if they meet those criteria at the time that their contract expires? So maybe now I am doubting his UFA status, although I could be mistaken here. Like, I don't think you can be an unsigned RFA and then turn into a Group VI UFA, can you? Lockwood went UFA when his existing contract expired.

Hmmm, this might actually be the case although the wording that I can find isn't overly clear.

Off the top of my head example, but if this were the case wouldn't Rodin have become a UFA while he was an unsigned RFA in Sweden?

I'm skeptical the Canucks would be in the running. He's probably looking for $2m or higher and guaranteed playing time.

Yeah, good call. That must be the case and I stand corrected.

If he's an RFA - which appears to be the case - they would have leverage to drive the price down.

True, but I'm pretty sure that he'd rather be making, say, $1.2 million on a 1-way NHL deal than going back to central Russia. Especially as a guy who isn't really Russian other than by name.

No idea about dude's background, but yeah, there are very very few North American players with viable NHL options who choose to play in Russia instead.

Even ignoring anything away from the game, from listening to players talk about it, the culture shock in terms of team approaches to training, to - for lack of a better term - players rights, to medical stuff, and to - again for lack of a better term - general, uh, shitshowishness seems to be very, very substantial for players who are used to the way high-end hockey is typically done in North America.

He's an American who has played all his development years in North America aside from the past 2 seasons in Russia. Not much of a comparison to Kuzmenko.

He's a fully American guy who spent his entire career in the AHL/OHL so presumably he won't have the defensive/system adjustment issues that plagued Kuzmenko.

I mean purely superficially. Won the sweepstakes for the hot KHL commodity, dump him, then go after the next hot KHL commodity.

Kovacevic is going to cost a fortune. He's a solid #5D with size on the Hoglander contract for two more playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised if the asking price is nearly as high as what we paid for Lindholm.
It won’t be nearly that high. I think it’ll higher than many expect but those of us paying attention to him will think it’s a lesser return.

Wonder what it would cost to get him and Emberson as a package. Emberson is a lot less proven than Kovasecic, and is RFA with arb rights this summer but I bet he's jump at a contract similar to the one we just gave Aman. nice depth add for stretch with upside.

Depth defencemen value is weird at the TDL. Savard and Chiarot recently returned 1sts but then plenty of others returned mid round picks like Lyubushkin, Hamonic, and Dermott.

Savard at least had a reputation as a great shutdown defensemen, even though he had fallen off a cliff that season. Kovacevic’d biggest asset is his contract so he should go for more than a mid-late pick but trade deadline values are always weird.

I’m going to speculate that where there is smoke—there is fire.

Vancouver is more than prepared to flip Zadorov to another contender at the deadline, and use that cap space and returned asset to sweeten the deal for a bigger upgrade to their defense that they are seeking.

Gaustad going for a 1st in 2012 makes me laugh. A players value is as high as the team who needs him. And Poile must have been high as f***.
