I think we’re done for higher end forwards.

We need to go after some big, meat and potatoes type of guys and push Aman down as our 13th forward.

my guy is Pezzetta but there’s definitely other alternatives like Greenway who you can definitely slot higher up in the line up at say 2LW beside Miller and Boeser and have Suter play 4C.

Perhaps you can trade Mikheyev + for Ryan Hartman? He’s on a $1M contract for the rest of the season before his $4M x 3 kicks in. Could be another target.

You can then do:

Greenway/Pezzetta-Miller-Boeser
Pettersson-Lindholm-Hartman
Joshua-Blueger-Garland
Hoglander-Suter-Lafferty
Yep. What they need now is another mid-range two-way forward. That would bump Suter back down to 4C and give them fantastic four line depth.

Obviously they've been looking at Greenway. I don't think MIN does a Mikheyev for Hartman swap, given he's cheaper and cap play center.

From the sellers, maybe I'd check in on Roslovic, if he comes cheap enough. I actually like the idea of Anthony Mantha, if there's max retention. Zucker would be an option. These are more "offensive" types though. However I don't think they would be very expensive to acquire.

For more traditional "playoff" types, I wonder what the cost on Bjugstadt would be. That would be a great fit. Big, RH, can play center, and signed next season for cheap (which is why he would likely be relatively expensive). There's Henrique that will be traded and he will come cheaper. If SEA falls a bit lower in the playoff race, I would also really be checking in to see what you could do with Yanni Gourde. There's a player for the playoffs.

Tanev is 34 years old. I love the guy and hated that we let him walk but I’d be leery of trading a key piece of our future for him.
Maybe grab a good depth guy who can move up into the top 4 if there are injuries.
Circle back to signing Tanev in the off season on a cheaper deal and let him replace Myers.

I think we're probably going to pick up someone like Lyubushkin for a 3rd or so and then forward depth, either Kessel or a big body for the bottom 6.

IMO - I can see us trying to acquire Anthony Duclair for cheap from SJ. He's got a scoring background and some deep playoff run experience, and I still think scoring winger depth to slide in next to either Miller/Boeser or Petey/Lindholm wouldn't be a bad idea.

I know he's old (38) and likely on his last legs but Alex Goligoski can still put in 16-19 minutes a night (needs to be load managed the rest of the way). The Wild are so far out of it that he will probably be available at the deadline. He's looked solid in the Wild games I've watched.

I find it interesting that the Canucks' hit rate on roster players has been so high over the past year, but the only change that Rutherford / Allvin have made to the pro scouting department is to bring in Scott Young from the Penguins.

All the other pro scouts actually joined the team under the Gillis regime, including Brett Henning as Director of Pro Scouting.

You wonder how this team would look if Benning / Weisbrod hadn't just been making trades based on vibes.

Cammi Granato is also involved in overseeing the scouting.

But yeah. I think we all basically knew that our pro scouting was just Benning/Weisbrod and the white board.

Frick, I just spent a few minutes trying to find that video of Benning and his wall of weird whiteboard. I can't find it! Wonder if they scrubbed it?

EDIT:

Found a picture with it.

Would be great to undo another massive Benning blunder and bring Nic Dowd home and get Aman out of the everyday roster.

WSH also has a glut of RHD right now and I would go after Nick Jensen who has put up really excellent defensive/PK numbers year over year, pending UFA.

EDIT: I am wrong, Jensen signed for two more years at 4.05MM, cancel on Jensen!

Jensen is not a pending UFA, he's signed for two more years at $4.05M. Don't want to touch that contract, you can probably get 75% of the utility of Jensen at 25% of the cost targeting a guy like Chatfield.

Didn’t we have a prospect named Nick Jensen who busted?

He has a NMC and has turned down a few trade scenarios in the last year.

Caps fans say that Jensen has lost a step so no thanks to him(I was a big Jensen fan in the past though).

I still wonder about Kovacevic from Montreal, signed cheap through next year, good size, seems like a decent enough 6/7 dman to have around in case of injuries.

Minny probably won‘t sell but I like Duhaime from them. Tocchet would like his forechecking.

Nick Bjugstad will probably be pricey but I like him too plus he’s signed through next season at a good cap hit, think Tocchet would love him.

Crap.

Rutherford on Marek said most likely no more big trades and its about tweaking now

Tweaking:

Slang. behaving in a wildly excited or agitated manner, especially as an effect of using methamphetamine, cocaine, or other stimulant drugs: He was pacing around and bursting in and out of emotional fits like a tweaking junkie.

Time to get wildly excited!

I think the roster is set. Not much more you can do aside from a minor move to improve depth.

Tanev likely won't land here unless there's some kind of direct ask, where he asks Conroy to do him a solid and move him to his preferred destination of Vancouver (if this is even true, or happens of course), and then we make some kind of fair deal with em, almost certainly it would have to be under value what Tanev would get on the open market.

“Most likely” doesn’t know it Guentzel is available and/if the price is too high

So yeah, most likely just tweaking adding depth
