Canucks News, Rumours, and & Fantasy GM | Playoffs Approaching

You can’t make up a scenario and then say they made a mistake for not doing your imagined trade.

I don’t think there was a reasonable way to offload Mikheyev at this deadline. Sounds like they explored it but moving long term salary was too expensive of a proposition for short term upgrades.
okok. Nevermind.

Agree.

They should have traded for Crosby, the cowards.
Are we just making up scenarios that are not even plausible now and act like they would have been on the table?

Please do not make up scenarios in the made up scenarios thread, thanks.

Not paying the First (+) to swap mik for toffoli feels even more like a mistake now... like who would care about the price now, with an even better, stronger roster.
Not adding to a top two team to bolster it even more for a strong run is bit of a bummer.

And New Jersey does this why? They want to compete next season and a late first while being strapped with Mikheyev's cap hit would make harder. Several reports claimed they only wanted picks.

Now we could have potentially made it work by finding a broker but who's to say New Jersey didn't want to wait until we figured out the cap shenanigans or they simply liked Winnipeg's picks better. After all, we can't offer them a 2024 third because of the Lindholm conditions.

I don't think so. We got ourselves more depth. I don't see an issue here. right now if you ask me, blame the coaching putting both Lindy and Pettersson with everyone but each other.

Lindholm would've been fine based on his play if we had paid maybe a 2nd for him? I like the fact that they tried to get ahead of the market but in this instance they ended up paying more for him (not that I think the asserts spent will amount to much) than later market prices dictated. When you look at what Guentzel is doing (8 points in 5 games) it seems he would've been a better usage of those assets. And this is coming from someone who does not want to sign Guenztel in free agency.

Lindholm (and Mikheyev) was better last night, and does seem to be marginally improving on a game by game basis - I'll grant him that. Not to the extent that Ferraro was raving about him or Mikheyev last night though lol.

Boeser or Garland has to go in the offseason.

Will be interesting to see what value they have in the market especially with more cap space to work with.

I can't imagine there's much for Garland.

Boeser is a Top 6 forward. Hopefully teams value him as such in a trade.

If they do, I think that would be one of the hard decisions mgmt needs to make.

I don't think he was very good at C, they were kinda just throwing stuff at the wall to see if it would work because he was struggling so much. Definitely a decent buy low candidate (i.e. not trading Lek) if Tocchet sees enough in his game that won't get him the Kuzmenko treatment.

I think whoever ends up taking over there will give Laine some runway to get back on track. Failing that, he would be buy low and the type of acquisition the Canucks can wait on. See how it plays out.

This would also give them further information on Lekkerimaki in the meantime.

Maybe Podkolzin would be of interest there.

At this point, if Mikheyev checks with aggression he will get a pass. That's how low the bar is for him.

Lindholm was insurance for Pettersson. The payment was bad. Jumping out ahead of the market also hurt them value wise (it was the same for Horvat, imo). But if we see Lindholm through the lens of C insurance, it's a move we just accept, no matter how poorly it has worked out.

There is that as well. Presumably if Petterson had re-signed earlier they wouldn't have targeted Lindholm.

I don't disagree with the general thought, but what would Guentzel have cost to get here? We would have had to add on a real Cap dump. Remember They actually really like Bunting. This wasn't a "bad" contract to them. So we would need to pay even more.

Garland, Hunter B., two of Raty/Bains/Podkolzin, and the picks.

With the caveat that a very good playoff performance could change everything, I would be shocked if Lindholm is in their plans for next year.

They have a lot of flexibility going into the offseason. Sure, if they tried to re-sign every UFA on their roster it would be very tight if even possible. I would much rather have the flexibility to shape the roster based on needs.

RIght now they have $25.5M cap space with the only real necessity to locking up their #2 D-man ($7.5?).

They have their #1D, 1C, 2C, a top 6 scoring winger (Boeser), a bunch of middle 6 wingers a couple of whom can actually score (Hoglander, Garland, Suter, Mikheyev), a solid #3/4 D-man (Soucy) and a #1G.

Their assets that they could draw from within include Podkolizn, Aman, PDG, Juulsen, plus the guys in Abbotsford.

Point is, after signing Hronek, they'll have about $18M to play with and priorities being at least one more top 6 scoring winger, a top 4D-man, and a 3C. I'd be opening the vault for Sam Reinhart, if that doesn't work, then Toffoli or Guentzel. Joshua and Zadorov (as a #5D) might each command too much to be part of the plan but I would sign them as the next priority if there's space.

I don’t think this makes us a significantly better team, you’re netting like 30pts/82 games while removing a big forechecking/intensity presence.

Do you mean switching to Guentzel? That's +49 PPG increase (going by pace) and static PP utility. It would be a massive upgrade.

People need to remember that the Canucks would give up a non-conditional 1st round pick. That automatically makes up for some of the difference in value. What's more, Podkolzin and Raty are already closer to the NHL than some of CAR's upside prospects.

It would have been a great trade.

Ruins our fantasy of running the elite 3rd line behind Petey/Guentzel + Miller/Boeser

Yes, I don’t believe adding Guentzel to play with Pettersson or Miller, who are already going to put up ~100 points each, while taking 40 ES points and a huge motor off the 3rd line, would make us a significantly better team. Would be an improvement, but not as big as wowza 50 point player for 80 point player!!!! surface-level analysis would lead you to believe.

As bad as it has turned out Lindholm was on a very manageable contract and a RHS Center who can play shutdown minutes. He was always getting a 1st and we paid to dump Kuzmenko’s $5.5 million for next year who was even more of a liability. If we use Lindholm as a pure shutdown matchup Center then the cost is only bad due to our depth down the middle where he should eventually take key draws and play PK.

He has the playoffs to earn his keep here still and we can’t count that out.

Why would you say it's even an improvement at all? What metrics are you using to assert even that much? Please share them.

Yours is a specious argument that I've seen made here many times. It goes from understanding nominal production is bettered by shot differential, but then stops before even more production betters that gain from shot differential. It's a two step analysis, instead of a three step analysis (or iterative).

Example: Boeser is more valuable than Garland, even if he were closer to Garland in EVPs. If that's true, then apply that same thinking again.

Garland will again be tough to move this offseason.

I would easily take Zadorov at $4.25M.

He’s actually one of the best physical-defensive defenseman in the game. The only difference between him and a “top 4” guy like Cernak or Trouba is that he averages about 2 minutes less than those guys, but every single stat suggests Zadorov is a better player.

Zadorov is also an elite skater and his foot speed is actually surprisingly in the top echelon of all defenseman in the NHL.

Side note, Will Borgen is a defenseman id target for next season. He’s criminally underrated. He’s basically an Artem Zub.

Trouba sucks worse than a 7th defenseman btw
I don't read anything canucks army, but all those numbers don't really matter. Zaddy need only look over at chaos giraffe and thinks he's atleast as good, wants a similar contract.

Some team will give him five plus million, Brad T wouldn't surprise me, dark horse Panthers.

interesting read on zadorov

Trouba sucks worse than a 7th defenseman btw

Wondered why this list didn't include Rel stats or QualComp? Looking into the article, I see it's sorted by height + PIMs... I suppose that's one way to parse the data.

Anyway, judging Zadorov against top4 Dmen in general, without specific selectors, it's easier to walk away from Zadorov's $5m~ per ask.

Assuming this team re-signs Myers, they have Hughes, Hronek, Myers and Soucy ahead of Zadorov. There's little room left to give out $4m-$5m AAV. Unless, that is, they give it to a RHD like Tanev on a shorter team deal.

Mmmm I’m not sure if I’m prepared to pay that, even if everything you said after was true and I believe it is.

Garland is better than Boeser.
