So...who's out there for GM candidates anyway?

I think I'm leaning more towards an old dog (Dale Tallon maybe?) who can get us an in with the Old Boys Club rather than some sexy new fancy stats young pup.

The intelligentsia on this board like Julien BriseBois, assistant GM in Tampa Bay, though BriseBois falls squarely in your latter category

Paul Fenton, Mike Futa, Don Maloney, Julien BriseBois, Dale Tallon, Laurence Gilman?

Fenton and Futa most likely aren't available though.

Why not both? Toronto has constructed a fantastic model, they've integrated their "young pup" into their management group perfectly by surrounding him with people who have succeeded in the industry.

Oh man I forgot about Maloney, big fan.

Yaaaassss now we're talkin'.

Dale Tallon!!!

Dale Tallon for GM!!
Canucks first draft pick ever. A man with experience and success at being an NHL
general manager. His influence on the progression of the Chicago Black Hawks and
the Florida Panthers enforces him being chosen as GM.
His failings have been in areas where Lorne Gilman is a master. A management team of those two would be infinitely superior to the management team we now
have!

Did Lawrence Gilman and Lorne Henning morph into one guy?

If the Aquillinis really wanted to turn this around they'd put the big money in the management - lure someone like Stan Bowman or Ken Holland here; but i believe both their contracts are good until 2018, as is Doug Armstrong... Frankly, they missed the boat when they didn't lure jimmy nill back to town and push gillis upstairs... but they would have also been wiser to keep torts one more year and really let him burn the house down...

The main problem is that Francesco Aquilini is no Jerry Jones, despite what he seems to think. Francesco has got to be one of the worst, if not the worst gm's in pro sports right now. I mean, you just don't see messes like the one we're looking at here in Vancouver created every day; this was the long form work of a highly incompetent individual. No present + no future isn't a destination easily arrived at, it takes the work of someone 'special' to manage such a spectacular achievement. These are some of the saddest results yet in the history of our long suffering, benighted hockey franchise.

If Aquillini was GM he would be even worse than Benning

Aquamen + Gillis = best period of the entire Canucks history.

Aquamen + Benning = down there with the worst period of the entire Canucks history.

This is why I'm willing to give the Aquamen a chance with another management team before I write them off. I keep seeing fingers being pointed at them because they "won't tolerate a rebuild" but you know what? Just as often I see just as many fingers pointed at us. "No, the fans won't tolerate a rebuild! The stadium will be empty if those horrible fans hear the word rebuild!" I'm sick of the excuses.

Write them off? It's ownership. You can't write them off. We are at their mercy. Whatever they want to do with the team they can.

spot on pc, was literally about to post that. i understand that ownership has been questionable, but it's ridiculous to blame them for all of bennings failures, most of the players benning has thrown picks away for management probably didn't even know.

I don't agree with the math, saying Aquilini + Gillis = Success!!! The relationship worked until Aquilini inserted himself in management and personnel decisions after the cup final. Torts, Luongo/Schneider, retool by filling the age gap to hold a fickle market, while "rebuilding" on the sly with an inexperienced, "amateur scouting" GM who had better draft the kid from Abbotsford, seems like illustrations of an organization at odds with itself. A dysfunctional compromise between ownership and management that has now failed through two regimes.

I don't intend to say that Gillis and Gilman were particularly great, and that Aquilini is sole reason for their failure. Linden and Benning, also, deserve much of the criticism they receive here. They are out their depth, and whatever small opportunity that might have existed to maintain relevance, has been squandered by their actions.

A top-down replacement of this management group is necessary, but until there is a sea-change with ownership, a successful rebuild is unlikely. Aquilini had earned a positive reputation around the league for supporting a forward-thinking management group, but that currency seems totally spent now. Our ownership now seems to be viewed throughout the league as a liability. Can they attract top talent when they can't seem to step back and accept the reality of the situation this team faces?
