Coyly hinting that their GM (or hockey ops president or whatever) isnt afraid to make big trades, then openly criticizing your most important franchise center. I really dont recall other teams doing this.

I think they already have a trade, and this is about preparing the fanbase/controlling the narrative.

Vancouver must not have a Bruce Garrioch to do it for them, so their GM has to go out and do that part.

New Years Eve would be a great time to move him. People would be distracted with other things. It would slip under the radar. Kind of like dealing bad news on a Friday.

I post this here as well, for Montreal:

Laine+Dach+2025 2nd for Pettersson

Its so bad that its good. Everyone loses in that trade if you look at it from a long term perspective as of now. But it could turn out to be a huge win for both as well.

They can gladly take Bruce Garrioch

I don’t understand this logic. No horse in the race but you have to go back to 21-22, the season he was 22/23 years old for the last time he scored in the 60s, with 68. He’s currently on pace for 68 but we’re not even at the half way mark and his last two years were 102 and 89 points. 191 points in 162 games. Add the “bad” first half this year and it’s still 219 points in his last 194 games so I have a hard time believing teams will view a guy who just turned 26 and hasn’t had less than 89 points in a season since he was 23 as a 60s point player based on one season. I actually think Pettersson is an 85+ point center the second he is moved most likely. He could still even reach that this season. 28 in his last 34. He would need 57 in his next 48. That’s within his pace the last two years. Probably more likely he finishes this year with something like 72 points but I find it funny how quickly he’s being written off by some.
Well it would be easier to understand if you actually read the post.

I'm not saying he's viewed as a high 60 point centre right now. I'm saying if they hang on and next offseason if he still... struggled then that's 2 seasons of high 60s and 6 out of his 8 seasons where he doesn't break 70 points.

He very well could bounce back and play at above a ppg pace with a new team and no outside distractions.

JT Miller has even looked down this year.

Not sure if there is an actual rift between them, or not, but either something is weighing on Pettersson (and by extension Miller), or two seasons were an anomaly and not the norm.

TL;DR Pettersson struggling again next year will bring his value down year if this year finishes the way it's trending.

I think if EP is really available, Carolina is calling again. They have a good amount of $$$ coming off the books next year. Necas will be part of the deal no doubt. KK, or Drury, Morrow and a 1st or prospect. Maybe only the Wild is one of the contending teams with more cap space going into next season? I may need to check that again. Canes need a top 2 center. Aho and EP would be interchangeable. Then you have Staal and whoever remains for the 4C. Solid centers top to bottom.

Can Carolina really fit him in now? Necas has broken out as a top star, and they went long-term with Jarvis. They have lost a lot of cap flexibility since they apparently made a pitch for him.

Handicapping where I think he would go if he were traded, order of likelihood: (I’m an idiot so it’ll be somewhere else)

1. Calgary or Ottawa

Canada keeps the deal to itself: with contracts being specialized for the location they’re signed it becomes efficient for places with similar conditions to deal between themselves.

2. A New York Team

Between Buffalo’s potential offers that seem to be among the most mutually beneficial, NYR’s seeming desire for a large shakeup, and even some lunacy like a Horvat reunion, a lot of ways to see this happen.

3. Vegas

Vegas finds a way even when you don’t think there is a possible way. Vegas likes shiny new things. It’s really hard to leave them off any list when a marquee talent is involved.

Rangers don't have what it takes to get him. Others teams can easily beat whatever realistic offer they throw out there.

I’m not going to argue about his current play because he’s absolutely underperforming.

But it’s really pointless to mention “60 points this and 60 points that.”

He’s PPG for his career. He averages 82 points per 82 games.

Only 17 other active players can say this.

Pettersson is a PPG player at worst.

If you're hypothetically willing to or trying to trade him, publicly saying he's not playing like an elite 1C looks bad when you try to tell other teams "You're paying for an elite 1C".
This would be a tangible argument if Vancouver was needing to “sell” Pettersson’s value or worth in a hypothetical trade scenario, but they really don’t need to. Every organization has seen and knows what he’s capable of and any acquiring team would be doing so under the assumption that he’ll regain his form for them.

I could see Minnesota coming out of their boots to get Pettersson. They would be drooling at the idea of a top line with kaprizov and Pettersson
